Lands and Demons in Mono Black

Legacy forum

I have been wanting a mono black deck that was heavy on the creature side. I finally built one but it needs some tweaking. There are two things I need some help with. The first is what are the best lands for a mono black deck. I have 2 Tectonic Edge in it. Im also running more zombies than anything else if that matters. I was thinking of trying to find a land that creates a creature but not sure what that would be. I know its out there Ive seen it. I just dont know what its called. Also Im running some demons but was curious what the best mono black demons are in legacy. My deck is a little bit of a mess right now until I figure these things out.

Dark Depths , Mutavault ...

Legacy mono black is typically a Pox deck, utilizing Sinkhole , Smallpox , Wasteland , and Liliana of the Veil to limit their resources. I think they win the rather grindy match with Nether Spirit , but could be mistaken.

Tomb of Urami is as Demonland as you can get.

I was already going to put Liliana of the Veil in there but I dont have her yet. The other idea are all good as well. I was trying to control their creatures rather than resources. An Tomb of Urami is not bad. A 5 for 5 demon is decent being as it can be cast as many times as the land stays in play.

aeonstoremyliver thank you for your suggestion! Mutavault is what I was looking for. I will be getting two copies for my deck. naynay666 I failed to read the full extent of your land. Though it seems like a interesting card... sacking all of my lands for one 5/5 is not going to run well in my deck.

aeonstoremyliver and naynay666, I just realized I never really got an answer about the best demons to use in mono black. I have a few kinda junky ones right now.

Well, to be honest, the only demon that sees any play in Legacy is Tombstalker . You can usually find him in the aforementioned Pox deck, or occasionally in a BUG mid-range build. With a fetch land and 2 Dark Ritual s, you can get him out turn 1.

I have a playset of Abyssal Persecutor in a gatekeeper deck, but it's not actually competitive.

I kinda came up with an interesting strategy thats based off of some decks I seen. Im running Zombies and Demons. Except for the exception of 2 Grave Titan for his ability to create zombies. Also 2 Nightmare , which will be part of my plan. And 4 Tenacious Dead for reusable chump blockers. Im going to intentionally sac my creatures into the grave using Entomb and Buried Alive . Then I will use Exhume and Zombify to pull them back out without paying their cost. I am running 4 Rune-Scarred Demon and will target my Whip of Erebos and Dying Wish . Then Ill use the whip to target Nightmare , which will be in the grave. Once hes on the battlefield Ill place Dying Wish on him and swing. Since hes flying I should get through. Then when he leaves the battlefield due to the whip he will again deal damage and I gain life. I have the zombies in there in case it all back fires and I need to respond quickly.

Naynay is correct. Percy can be a beast, if enough Diabolic Edict type effects are played. Phyrexian Obliterator also seems good, while not a demon or a zombie.

Also consider splashing green for Abrupt Decay . Stellar card. AEther Vial works well in tribal decks, allowing you to have mana open for removal and other disruption.

Phyrexian Obliterator has always been one of my favorite cards. I never thought of using him in this. I might sac somebody for him just have to figure out who.

@naynay666 The only demon? Have you forgotten Griselbrand exists and is a thing in every format he's legal in?

DarkMagician Im actually running Griselbrand along with Rune-Scarred Demon . I have a possible turn 2 win reanimator deck. I just finished it yesterday.

@GlissasTraitor I run both in my Vintage Rakdos Reanimator as well. They're both massive beat sticks with evasion that provide card advantage, what more can you ask for.
