Eldritch Moon Card For Burn May Have Potential

I was browsing on The Gatherer and I came across Thermo-Alchemist and I couldn't help but think this card could have potential in the Burn scene both legacy and modern. I wanted to see what everyone else thought. I like the fact that your spell doesn't have to resolve for the affect to work. If someone is playing a competitive burn deck with 3 lands out, this has the potential to fire off 4 times considering a Rift Bolt was suspended the turn before and on average 3 times per turn!. That's pretty amazing for a two drop. Now it can be gotten rid of easily I will admit but so can Goblin Guide, Grim Lavamancer, Eidolon of the Great Revel and monestary swiftspear and these are considered absolute staple cards in burn. The 3 toughness can deal with most 1 or 2 drops also. So what do you think?

I see the point you're making on this card but in Modern/Legacy Burn decks you're talking about dropping a 2 drop turn 2 that does nothing that turn. I think it's just too slow giving the current speed of the Burn meta.

he just seems kind of slow. That is also not a fair comparison comparing it to any of those burn creatures all of them either have haste or extra utility beyond that of a typical creature

I have been playing Thermo-Alchemist in Pauper Burn and it's been great! But...that's Pauper. I'm pretty sure it's too slow for Legacy or Modern.

Think about this. Turn 1, bolt. Thats 3. Turn two drop Thermo. Turn 3 suspend a Rift Bolt. Turn 4 at beginning of upkeep tap thermo for 1, thats a total of 4 damage now. Rift unsuspends for 3 doing 3 and thermo untaps and tap him again. Now we are at 8. say 2 more bolt and two more untaps thats 16 damage now if you could cast another bolt or a Flame Rift even better. save a few land with Fireblast that's game. He may take a turn to be effective which is very anti-burn but the potential could outweigh the 1 turn of uselessness. Given the fact that most competitive legacy decks will take 2-3 turns to really pop off you could get him out no problem and remember, the spells don't have to resolve for him to work so as long as it's out, the damage is guaranteed. Let me add that Rift Bolt does not do anything the turn it comes out. Lavamancer doesn't do anything the turn it comes out. Those are must have cards in most cases.

If we're talking legacy burn, let me run some numbers for you.

Turn one, Goblin Guide, 18. Turn two, Lava Spike + Rift Bolt sus., Goblin guide swing plus their fetch brings them to 12. Turn three, Rift bolt + Lightning bolt + Fireblast + Guide Swing is lethal on turn three without using all the cards in your hand.

Burn doesn't need the help of a 2 mana do nothing. The deck is all about converting mana into damage, and this card only converts 2 mana into maybe 3 damage, at which point you just play Lightning Strike because it can't be killed.

And if there's an argument for Eidolon of the Great Revel here, this thing pumps out around 6 damage a game on average because it can attack. The alchemist cannot attack, making it essentially useless.

If your using Lightning Strike in legacy burn than that is a no win. All I am saying here is the card has potential.

Its a card that will never see play outside of limited, That's just a fact, legacy burn wins just fine without a 2 drop that doesn't even damage the turn it comes in.

Shane.Allen

Well, that's not particularly true. This thing is a beast in pauper.

DevoidMage Okay, you are right with Pauper, I wasn't thinking about that format, my focus was on this not being good enough for Legacy or Modern.
