Burn.

It's cheap, straightforward, and strong against most things.

zandl's suggestion is probably the right one, but a fun deck I found is David McDarby's Veteran Planeswalker deck. It's effing expensive but looks hilarious to run.

Dredge without LOD is fairly budget, but burn is probably your best bet

Yep. Red Deck Wins is competitive and affordable.

Dredge without Lion's Eye Diamond is affordable. Affinity is decently priced.

I suppose it also depends on your play style. Are you Aggro, Combo, or Control? Do you like mono decks, dual colored, or shards?

Uh, I'll just state for the record that Esper Deathblade, though a tier-1 threat, will cost $3,000 if you go out and straight-up buy a winning version of it.

BUG Delver can go up to $4,500 even, depending on which fetches you use and how many of each dual-land you have. Just a playset of Goyfs nowadays will set you back at least $700.

I also want to state that each delver deck plays very differently so test them all out as rug, bug, UWR, UR and GRUB are all different decks. I personally thing BUG is the best right now. Also I would recommend a combo deck or something with cabal therapy like nic-fit because it forces you to learn the format

Burn is the cheapest deck that has been regularly top 8ing lately. Eidolon of the Great Revel is a great card.

As previously mentioned Dredge w/o LED is pretty cheap. I just built mine for around $200.

My other suggestion to tack on if you have an unlimited budget would be to start with one of the fair decks, such as:

  • Delver
  • Deathblade
  • Miracles
  • Burn
  • Fish
  • Death and Taxes
  • etc.

The reason is that these decks are less dependent on your meta. If you start with one of the combo or other types of abusive decks (Dredge, ANT, OmniShow), you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle as these thrive in specific metas. As Khanye stated, you'll definitely want to proxy up several different decks to mess around with or hop on MWS, Cockatrice, or Untap.IN.

Jund is also very good and will set you back some cash with Goyf, Dark Confidant , Liliana of the Veil , and fetches/duals.

Nic Fit is a pretty sweet deck concept, albeit a bit combo based. I do concur that the straightforward 'fair decks' are well grounded. I'm a huge fan of mono green 12 Post. It's a blast to play and right around $1,200.00. If you have the cash for Tropical Island , Show and Tell , Candelabra of Tawnos , and the ilk, the U/G 12 Post is also quite good.

Now that you said non-budget, I can reply!

Esper Stoneblade is a very powerful deck, with overall good matchups.

Lands is incredible if you expect to play against lots of fair decks, but unplayable against combo. It's also one of the hardest decks in the format to play.

Storm and High Tide are both difficult to play combo decks. They're competitive, but will take a lot of learning.

rUg delver, like Esper stoneblade, is very powerful, with lots of positive matchups, a good amount of disruption, and some of the best creatures in the format.

UWR delver is similar to if esper stoneblade and rUg delver had a baby. Lots of disruption, while capable of playing a longer game than rUg, makes for a lot of good matchups.

UW(r) Miracles is the only pure control deck in the format. It goes as slow as can be, play counter-top, and a bunch of counterspells and sweepers.

Death and Taxes is a consistent, powerful deck, that you have to work for just about every victory with. You won't get free wins, but your opponents won't often either, thanks to your disruptive creatures.

Jund plays a lot of the best cards in the format. It makes it so that your opponent has to struggle uphill through every single game.

Elves, while incredibly difficult to pilot, is a good starting point, because it doesn't require too much expansive knowledge about other decks.

I would argue that the best way to enter the format is a deck that doesn't interact too much with your opponent, because it requires less knowledge of your opponent's decks. With a control or midrange deck, you'll stumble on which card to discard or counter, while a storm or other combo deck is more oriented to playing your own game. MTGTop8.com is a great starting point to learn more about the format and find decks you like.
