Mono-White voltron!?

Legacy Deck Help forum

I'm wondering if my deck I made Swords Brandished High! is able to do anything in the legacy environment haha. I don't need to be grand prix or anything, I just want to actually stand a chance against other legacy decks. If anyone has any improvements I should make, I'd appreciate it. Keep in mind I'm semi-budget, but don't let that stop expensive suggestions, as this is legacy after all. (P.S - I really enjoy the equipment type of deck, so that's something I don't think is going to change)

Have you tried Legacy Death and Taxes? It's a very similar deck to your own, although with a little more creature focus. (it runs a remarkably similar list usually though, with stoneforge mystic, Mom, Batterskull and Jitte.)

I haven't actially tried it slovakattack, and I've really only playtested the deck above. I like Death and Taxes, and the idea behind it, and I'm wondering honestly of it would first of all beat my above deck, but a main thing about it is that it apparently really needs the Karakas, Rishadan Port and Wasteland which hurts the wallet :P

Legacy is generally a lesson is wallet abuse.

Hahaha fluffybunnypants that's most definitely true. I'm slowly easing into the non-competitive fun side of legacy I guess.

Death and Taxes run those cards for very strong reasons, however. Karakas is used to stop Reanimator, Sneak and Show, etc., while also forming a strong combo with Mangara of Corondor for permanent exile in long games.

Rishadan Port and Wasteland give you valuable time against the many combo decks of Legacy, as well. Which, in order to beat something like Painter's Servant + Grindstone combo with Force of Will or Goblin Welder backup, you're going to need more than just a set of Swords to Plowshares.

These cards hurt the wallet, but they're what that deck needs in order to properly handle most of the Legacy meta game. If you can't afford them, do not play mono white.

If you want some honest advice from someone who has played predominately tier two decks in Legacy against tier ones for the last seven years, the here's my advice:

Drop most of your equipment (Argentum Armor is too expensive and you won't be able to Stoneforge it in with a meta game ripe with Abrupt Decay, Masterwork of Ingenuity is a bad card for Legacy, etc.), remove Ancient Den (that is a liability, not a boon), Leonin Shikari, Kor Deulist, Puresteel Paladin, etc..

Move the deck to the Stoneblade shell. You seem like you want to drop creatures and force your opponent to deal with them, but rather than running do-nothing creatures like Leonin Shikari, you can run True-Name Nemesis who, when suited up, can end the game quickly for you.

Council's Judgment, Ponder, Brainstorm, Thoughtseize are all cards you should consider. You won't be able to beat most decks without targeted discard, and if Force of Will is out of your price range, you have to run more targeted discard. Your goal should be turn 1 Inquisition of Kozilek or Thoughtseize to either get your opponent off of their combo or, against a fair deck, to ensure you can safely land a Stoneforge and get a Sword out.

The only Swords you should really run would be Batterskull, Sword of Feast and Famine or Sword of Fire and Ice (and this is dependent on the number of True Name Nemesis you run, since the protections aren't relevant to him and that's why you run the Swords, for the most part), and Umezawa's Jitte.

I would strongly recommend checking out The Source and viewing their threads on Stoneblade, Deathblade, etc., and seeing which ones you may like, as well as viewing the explanation for what cards are run and why. Combo decks are some of the cheapest to make in Legacy, with Oops All Spells being almost $100 cheaper than the mono white list you posted. There are tons of these kinds of cheap, linear decks in the format that, if you're going to play a fair non-combo deck like this, you must be prepared to handle (hell, I have a Painter's Stone deck that, without its Volcanic Islands and Forces, is pretty cheap. I also have Reanimator, Enchantress, Affinity, etc., and the only one of those I think you could have a fair game against is Affinity).

My recommendation if getting into Legacy? Play a combo deck and trade up for staples while you do so; don't play a deck that stands no chance against cheaper, more linear decks (or Enchantress, lol). Also: Make sure you get fetches first. I found that fetchlands vastly improved my color draws, so long as I thought ahead, before I got my duals. You can play more than one color in Legacy so long as you don't want to open with W turn 1 and UU turn 2, which most really don't.

Sorry for the long post. Hope this kind of helped.

Thanks for the response.. it's extremely helpful. I guess my mono-white voltron deck just doesn't cut it for legacy in general. I don't really like Death and Taxes a whole lot, but I do like stoneblade. I can also cut the really expensive lands from stoneblae like Volcanic Island for now until over a period of time I can get them.
