Averna Cascade

Legacy Deck Help forum

Ok, I'll be honest, I'm an idiot and I don't play Legacy. I have watched it and I know modern so I kinda know how the format works, but go easy on me please. I love the new spoiled card Averna, Blooming Chaos, but it seems kinda bad in commander, so I started looking into Legacy for a home for it. I figured you would have to play a normal(ish) Cascade deck with good cascaders and payoffs to hit with those. So like 4x Bloodbraid Elf and 4x Shardless Agent, the payoffs to hit with those could be a couple Ancestral Recalls and Crashing Footfalls. But then we need a way to abuse Averna, because lets face it getting regular lands isn't going to work in legacy. I looked at a couple lists and found some good synergies to use, namely Wasteland and Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage. Wasteland slows our opponents down without affecting us and a 20/20 is just good. I figure I would also need Crop Rotation and the like to make the deck more consistant. I would then also play cards like Oko and just good stuff in RUG. My friend says it would never work and I don't understand legacy at all. So? What do you think of the idea?

Shit, I meant Ancestral Vision not ancestral recall lol. I also just realized Averna is in French, according to the MTGgoldfish translations whenever you cascade you may put a land from among the exiled cards onto the battlefield under your control.

The pay off simply isnt good enough for Legacy. A 3 cost who makes your 4 cost cards, already a heavy cost in Legacy potentially sometimes ramp isnt good enough.

@LeaPlath, its not supposed to ramp you, its supposed to find your land combo pieces and sometimes wasteland, I know ramping isn't good enough.

But then its even worse because its inconsistant compared to every other way of playing the deck and requires colourless lands. It just isnt worth doing really compared to anything else in Legacy with those cards. Especially not a 4/2 who dies to everything and then some.

I would start here to check out the meta: https://www.mtgtop8.com/format?f=LE

The good news is that both RUG threshold/Delver/goodstuff and Dark Depths combo decks are pretty established meta decks. The bad news is that I don't think this will speed up the Dark Depths deck significantly because you're cutting black, which takes out the Vampire Hexmage backup combo, which is the "Turbo" part of turbo Depths.

So, how about Lands? Does it fit into the Lands shell?

I honestly don't think so. In almost all of these decks, Elvish Reclaimer is just going to be more accurate, faster, and require less mana investment.

If Sultai Shardless was still a good deck, maybe it could become 4c value and add a Lands package, kind of merging the two decks. But it's been pretty well replaced by the "Snowko" decks and, now, 4c Omnath Snowko. The snow base is just more consistent value.

That's my take on it. But legacy, if you're gonna play it, should be a labor of love! Maybe surprisingly, most "casual" e.g. non-tournament legacy playgroups will probably have some pet decks, decks that are lower-power because they're from past metas, and homebrews. This is because it's expensive to keep up with new decks, and because people need a starting point to get into an expensive format. I'd still be playing BR Reanimator even though it's decidedly bad right now, because I bought the damn thing. So if you want to mess around with it feel free!

Yeah you guys r right. It looks like a fun deck but I wouldn't serious money into it unless I could see it preforming well. Now ima go see if I can find a deck for another commander legends card lol. Thanks for the advice

It's not a build-around, but I feel like Opposition Agent will slot into BW Death and Taxes :)

abby315 Did you just read my mind?? Lmao I was just trying to figure out how to break it. I think it can be possible to break it with cards like Scheming Symmetry Idk if that is great but in conjunction with Field of Ruin and Ghost Quarter I think I could do some fun stuff with it. What colors would I build it if I just tried to abuse the hell out of its ability?

i feel like Opposition Agent would be amazing paired with Maralen of the Mornsong.

If you like getting punched in the face by your friends, anyways.

MagicMarc, Yeah thats diabolical ;). Yeah The destroy lands becoming great cuz ghost quarter turns into strip mine and fields makes them tutor(But you only get a land)(Imagine how good it would be against a turbo lage deck lmao) It would be a little clunky with the key pieces of the deck being three drops but I could see it working in a Dimir list with control pieces, although I don't wanna buy force of wills lol. The core could be something like 4x Opposition Agent, 3x Maralen of the morning, Some scheming symmetry's and the blow up lands. I'm sure im missing something but it still seems really fun. I just don't know how the rest of the deck would look. Maybe with a combo finish? Turbo lage could work as its in black.

https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mono-black-control-idk/ thats the deck so far but idk what the side would look like. I assume stuff to fight D&T and uro as those are the main problems, as D&T will be sorta like the mirror and uro is a huge problem against discard decks.

If you want to push this through, my idea is to play a hybrid brew of 12 post and Hypergenesis. The 12 post lands (Cloudpost, Glimmerpost, and Vesuva) you drop through Averna will generate hopefully enough colorless mana to cast colorless huge threats. Or if you can't find Averna, cascade through Hypergenesis (use Shardless Agent and Violent Outburst to stay in RUG colors) to drop said colorless huge threats. Be reminded thought that Hypergenesis has a deck building restriction to function properly (can't include cards with less than 3 CMC). Not really an ideal build when compared to a real 12 post or Hypergenesis build, but can be built and played for fun if you really wanted to.
