Unveiling the new format: UnModern!!

Hello everyone! I'd like to introduce you to the new format of Magic: The Gathering!

UnModern is an idea by Forest Bear Studios (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9q5MGieqJk&list=PLfH2EixPGDeMFWZiqIFGPdasETz3pdAVA&index=42), in which the cards in Unhinged were legal in modern! I thought this seemed like a pretty cool idea.

Post deck ideas to this forum. I'd love to see what people come up with!

All I'll be using from UNH are the sweet, sweet lands ;)

I think Ass Whuppin' should be legal just because it'd be pretty funny.

NoPantsParade, i think it's just a little too much, plus it's a dead card in most cases.

June 29, 2015 11:24 p.m.

NoPantsParade says... #7

That's true that it'd be a dead card, so it should be legal. It's not like you're blowing up something important, you know? It'd be different if you were blowing up a Pestermite, but blowing up Deadhead is no big deal.

What the fuck is this. Just make the banlist every Un card.

June 29, 2015 11:28 p.m.

JamesHughes says... #9

GlistenerAgent, that's called modern.

NoPantsParade, i think the problem is being able to have an impact on someone else's game.

NoPantsParade says... #11

He's trying to include the Un cards in modern. I honestly don't see it happening just because the Un cards don't really work with the regular stuff. They're meant to be played with each other.

JamesHughes says... #12

NoPantsParade It's not including in modern as much as it is creating a fun, casual new format. I don't expect this to have an impact on modern, but I think that some of the interactions between real and uncards are pretty fun, and there's no real format to experiment that.

So basically it's modern only with every manual dexterity card from the unsets. Which along with ante Wizards took out of the game. It's a lot of personal opinion on the ban list which creates inconsistency.

I think this format would make much more sense if you made a cube with modern stuffs and sprinkled in your un-cards to taste. This way you can create your personal ban list and justify it with it being your personal cube. Trying to make a format where most of the rules aren't liked or ignored completely like the ban list(like recent EDH rules committee for example) means the format isn't going in the right direction. Try it out as a cube, it sounds like you could have some fun interactions. As a format though I think it would be lacking and not distinct enough from actual modern

I'm well aware. Just pointing out that every Un card is silly and probably breaks sanctioned tournament rules in some way.

Like, I don't get the point.

NoPantsParade says... #15

What mathimus55 said. It would be best to play Un cards in a cube. A dude at my store threw some Un cards in the cube like AWOL just for giggles.

I can explain Curse of the Fire Penguin (according to MaRo's Podcast on the set): you enchant the creature by placing CotFP over top of the creature such that it's P/T, abilities, and card type are replaced by those on CotFP.

Challenge accepted.I will build and post a good old fashion Through the Breach Emrakul deck with Mise and Yet Another AEther Vortex, should be fun.

personally, I'd like to see the manual dexterity cards get played. I understand you all don't like the idea, but I like the idea of silly cards finding a home in magic, without restricting them to the tamest of uncards for a cube. The cards I put on a ban list were ones that were too expensive or too complicated (like having to have an unlimited supply of sealed boosters to play Booster Tutor). These were cards that were printed essentially for one purpose, and I'd like to see them get reused in a way that is more fun and engaging than one or two uncards in a cube.

Just going through all the UN cards to start this thing, came across Staying Power and thought it could be fun in so many decks.

Infect pump spells last forever, twin tokens stay forever...

Shathief says... #23

ya thats only a little broken,

should Blacker Lotus be on the banned list?

I am working on my combo deck and I think Aesthetic Consultation is one of the best tutor cards printed ever.

when I first started playing I ought a few fat packs and a starter deck - I noticed everyone else at the shop playing constructed had a deck of almost all rares... I wish I had Rare-B-Gone

JamesHughes says... #24

Shathief UnModern only uses unhinged cards. I think I forgot to say that. Blacker Lotus was unglued.

So I'm thinking of a R/W prison deck -

Silence + Staying Power

Angel's Grace + Staying Power

Maybe get some Isochron Scepter action going.

Not exactly sure how to win tho :P

All the fun of one-time jokes cards without the fun of actually playing a good game of Magic!

This is exactly what we needed.

Wizards got rid of cards with manual dexterity the same way they stopped doing ante and "game within a game" cards. Again, you're making the format about your personal preferences. If you're using the financial reasoning, the cards you have in the ban list are $2 or less. It's a neat idea, but your rationale for everything is all personal preference, which isn't bad but at the same time does not lend itself to a fun format most times. A fun draft environment(remember, it's your cube, you can put multiples of a card in the cube) would benefit greatly from the un cards and the variety they bring in.

It would similar to someone saying "well I like this format, but I don't like deck x, so you can't use that but instead use this that isn't part of the format." It's based on an individuals preferences which usually aren't indicative of the groups. It's just something to consider

mathimus55, Booster Tutor requires you to buy a pack every time you play it, Collector Protector relies on exchanging ownership of cards outside the game, Time Machine and Letter Bomb mess with the legality of the deck. The only card that I banned on opinion alone was R&D's Secret Lair, which I'm happy to include if someone wants to go through and decide how the lack of errata affects different cards.

I don't really understand how that is exceptionally opinion based. As for the format being out of personal preference, yes. You're right. I'm not trying to appeal to every magic player. It's not a format for everyone, just as magic is not a game for everyone. I don't expect everyone to play this, I don't expect it to affect real modern in any way. For those of you who have strong feelings against this format: Don't play it! It's that simple! I have fun building decks, maybe some other people will have fun building these decks. If you do not have fun building these decks, I don't need to know. I am perfectly happy for you to just walk away.

I really don't understand your issue with Booster Tutor - are you misunderstanding the card?

Only the person who plays the card opens a booster pack, not everybody. Nobody who doesn't want to has to spend any money (and booster packs are a whole lot cheaper than a lot of the cards in any given modern deck).

Named_Tawyny says... #30

I'm also not sure how Letter Bomb "Messes with the legality of the deck" at least beyond any other un card messing with the rules.

Named_Tawyny says... #31

Shathief, Staying Power wouldn't affect Splinter Twin. The tokens don't last 'until end of turn' they are exiled 'at the end of turn'.

Named_Tawyny says... #32

*beginning of the next end step, rather.

July 2, 2015 10:34 a.m.

JamesHughes says... #33

Named_Tawyny, I guess if you want to buy a whole bunch of packs that's fine. I think I'll take down the banned list and free up all the cards.

Deck list here - http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/lock-and-glue-them-down/

Will try another one with Storm crow as the win con by making it hexproof/unblockable "till end of turn" (after a Angel's Grace + Staying Power combo. - But that doesnt work with the fogs in my current list.
