Planeswalker Format

So you choose a planeswalker, and play as that planeswalker. Your starting life total is equal to the number of loyalty counters that PW has. In addition to that you have a number of loyalty equal to that PW's loyalty. Whenever you lose life, you lose that much loyalty, and vice versa. When you gain loyalty, you gain life. Gaining life doesn't cause you to gain loyalty. You also have X charge counters, where X is the PW's cmc. At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose a charge counter. You can pay to remove a charge counter. You can use an ability once while you have charge counters, and can't use your PW's abilities again until you have no charge counters. So what do you all think?

I think RDW would laugh hysterically at people starting with ~4 life.

use Chandra, the Firebrand

T1: -2, Mountain, Lightning Bolt

win.

Needs more starting life yo.

That's true, I addressed that, I feel like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon Would probably dominate. Maybe start with an extra 5 life or something.

Garruk, Apex Predator. +1 Destroy Target Player.

Okay not how it works but still the meta would all be the splashiest dumbest Planeswalkers with high loyalty OR damaging Planeswalkers.

I think it's needlessly complicated and very unbalanced.

Why force people to start with low single-digit life?

Why does gaining loyalty cause life gain but not vice versa? Why even have two numbers and selectively differentiate between them?

Why create a complex system of charge counters for determining when abilities can or can't be activated and then immediately create an exception to it?

If you have reasons for these decisions, you need to lay them out.

this is stupidly complicated for no reason.

A venture into playing as a Planeswalker is interesting like the oversized Garruk card, but they weren't designed to go against each other, and unlike commander this has no mana to cast them and makes the most overpowered Planeswalker dominant while also cutting life by an extraordinary degree with the power creep, interesting idea but please think an idea out more. The energy system too seems like... a shoe horned attempt at balancing but does nothing towards it, just a needless layer of complication. Please think about this but this is fundamentally... Bad so I can't give any more constructive criticism, sorry.

Another thing to consider is that we just hit 80 different planeswalkers, so there still is not enough to have a diverse meta yet. Besides that, there's alot of problems that need to be addressed.

I did the charge counter thing to balance out PW's with high CMC. The life gain and loyalty thing could be changed, I think there was some other rule that was unbalanced without that, but then got removed, and I forgot to remove that one. The loyalty and life have to be separate, since you now start with five life more than the PWs loyalty. That number might have to be tweaked a bit. And just to clarify, the PWs aren't actually in play, so they can't be destroyed. Otherwise Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and Garruk, Apex Predator would be OP.

This format has already been created. It's called Archmage. (link)

Didn't really take off.
