New Achievement Style EDH Format

This is a new multiplayer EDH format that we started playing at my local game store. We've had a blast so far, so I figured I would share it and see if anyone else was interested in playing it.

You can find the rules here:

Swifty Magic Rules

And you can find a gallery of the cards here:

Swifty Cards

This is still a work in progress - some cards and rules need to be fine tuned - but it is playable. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Like the idea. Very good thought!

However, some of those things aren't achievable in all decks. Having 3 different creature types on the battlefield in a Tribal deck? Exiling in an Omnath deck? If some of these can't be achieved, you then just can't win the game?

NorthernRaven: From the Reddit page:

  • At the start of each players upkeep, before the untap phase, that player may select up to 1 face down Swifty they control and put it on the top of the Swifty deck. If that player puts a card on the top of the Swifty deck, they shuffle the deck and draw 1 Swifty card and place it face down on their Swifty field.

Basically, if you get one you know you can't achieve, you can get yourself a new one.

Oh, I didn't saw that! Well, now I like the format a lot better! :)

Yeah. Part of the fun of the game is that there wont be any "quick wins" and it is not as exploitable as regular magic.

There is a randomness to it that allows you to play powerful decks you like, without worrying about being hated out of the game, or ruining other people's time with decks that are too finely tuned.

Out of the dozen or so people I have played with, only one person did not enjoy the format so far, and I think it is because they thought they would have won if we weren't playing Swifty (unaware that people were not playing their decks to their full potential, because they were actually trying to win Swifty, not just a game of EDH).

Just a thought: What about achievements, which gives you something good, but is harder to achieve? Like:

When you have 15 or more creatures, search your library for a creature, and put it into play.... (And then you of course get an achievement)

Something along those lines! That would be real awesome! (This might be too OP!)

I'm a little confused about winning. Let's say I'm playing with three other people (four total). If I'm the first person to flip 5 cards, does the game end and I win? That's what is implied by "Once the game is over, or if a player manages to flip 5 Swifty cards, each player counts the amount of face up Swifty cards they control. The player or players with the most face up Swifty cards wins the game." Or, does gameplay continue until the game concludes we the elimination of at least three players, at which point we count our cards? If it is the second option, why is there any stipulation about five Swifty's at all? Could a player conceivably flip more than five cards?

@NorthernRaven There are already more difficult cards that are worth more points - I have 2 point, 3 point, and 5 point cards - and I intend to add more as time goes on.

@FinchFalcon Sorry for the confusion, some of that text was before I added a point system to the cards.

There are two ways the game can end:

  1. Normal EDH eliminations (either resulting in 1 player having won, or a tie where the remaining players are all eliminated at once. Just like a normal game).

  2. Once a player has flipped 5 Swifty Cards face up.

Once one of these conditions has been meet (whichever happens first), the player with the most Swifty points (added total points of the face up Swifty cards they control) is considered the winner.

The player who ends the game might not win. For example, one player might cast an infinite combo that makes all their opponents mill out their deck. The game is over, but if the player who initiated the combo does not have the most points, they would not win.

Another example, say a player flips up their 5th Swifty card, and ends the game. They might have 5 2-Point cards, resulting in 10 points. Some Swifty cards resolve at the end of the game (individual cards will explain when to flip them, so there is no confusion), so a player might resolve a 5-Point card at the end of the game, with 3 already face up 2-Point cards, resulting in 11 points, which would give them the win.

I just realized I linked the wrong Reddit post, which is why the rules may be confusing. I made a second reddit post with the updated rules..

So how manny "swifty" cards are/will there be? Could you build your own swifty deck and your opponents build theirs? Or does every one have to agree on the cards before the game? Or is it an all the cards there is deck? Sorry for all the questions that you mite have already answered in the links you've provided but I'm on my iPhone 99.98% of the time and it gets tiering trying to read web pages scrolling from one side to the other over and over again. It sounds cool I just need more info man

This looks really fun, I hope you keep adding more Swifty cards.

Kozelek each player will use the same Swifty deck.

Something to balance out the way Tribal will have a hard time owning multiple creature types might be "You are awarded this card if you control only one type of basic land".

Also consider "Karma's Compensation: You are awarded this card if an opponent has taken control of a creature you own".

Something really funny would be "Last Man Standing: You are awarded this card if you control only one creature when the game ends." This could start a lot of panicked creature killing, even resulting in people using a Hero's Downfall or Eradicate on something as pitiful as Trinket Mage.
