Newbies (aka n00bs) are crucial to nearly any community. A year ago I came up with an idea of a format that could be used by advanced players on tournaments aimed for newbies. You know, so that n00bs would not get bashed THAT easy ;) Many players of my local store fell in love with it as it is easy on your wallet, is quite engaging and pretty well balanced. I called it Handicap.

Rules of deck building:

If you have an unmodified Intro Pack, you are fine, otherwise your deck should include:

  • no more than 8 rares including max 1 mythic rare, no repeats;
  • no more than 2 copies of any other card;
  • any number of Basic Lands;
  • no sideboard.

What do you think about it?

Seems like a nice way to level the playing field against noobs, but only against noobs that don't have access to decent cards yet.

A lot of new players will pick up a netdeck and just play it as they learn the game, and those noobs will probably mop the floor with anyone playing Handicap. Sometimes deck strength truly trumps player strength (after the initial learning curve, anyways).

That actually does sound kind of neat as an intro-only way for people to get acquainted with rules, procedures, etc. And I guess it could be used as a deck-building base, though that's 'supposed' to be what the actual Intro Decks are for. But even still, this gives some leeway on making the deck your own.

I think I'm going to use this to help teach the new kids at my magic club at school. Thanks!
