Wizards "You Make the Card"

General forum

Wizards of the coast has announced that they are going to do a fourth "you make the card" feature. For those of you who haven't heard of this, three times in the past wizards has allowed the Magic community to create a card by voting on each aspect of it. The previous three cards created this way were Forgotten Ancient, Crucible of Worlds, and Vanish into Memory. All of the details can be found here:

...of course, if I had fully read that line, I would have realized that you included "...ability if it's a mana ability.", but the second part of my response still holds. There are a few things I would still want people to be able to do with colored mana, when 'colorless' is called for.

I certainly wouldn't want to empower Mana Leak type effects, by making them essentially require twice the payment.

How about a 5 color enchantment that can be used in any deck. I've also enjoyed using Oblivion Ring . So here's my idea.

universal enchantment r/2, b/2, g/2, u/2, w/2 or maybe the pay life alternative.when enchantment comes into play, remove target land, creature, artifact, enchantment from the game. target opponent loses 5 life. when enchantment leaves play, life and permanents return.

Enchantment

I want an aura that turns into a creature when the creature its enchanting dies. Or an enchantment creature that turns into an aura when it dies. Or both. Like a phoenix.

Here's one:

END OF DAYS BBB

Enchantment

During your upkeep place a time counter on END OF DAYS, for each time counter on END OF DAYS target opponent sacrifices a permanent, discards a card, and loses 1 life.

If END OF DAYS has 4 or more counters on it, remove all counters and target opponent gains control of END OF DAYS.

If END OF DAYS is put into the graveyard from the battlefield, return it to owners hand.

@Apoptosis - nice card. you could use Clockspinning to keep it at 3 counters ;)

@Apoptosis Great idea with tons of potential. I like the idea a whole lot. @rtm2 great combo Idea as well!

March 24, 2013 7:51 a.m.

Apoptosis says... #8

Thanks guys. I would love to see a card like this. How about adding a BBB3 overload cost too? Then it wouldn't be targeted (lol). Also let's not forget about the Thrull Parasite !

March 24, 2013 11:42 a.m.

rtm2 says... #9

lol. overload to opponent loses "all" life?

March 24, 2013 12:33 p.m.

AKAJesus says... #10

No. Overload to all opponents instead of target.

March 24, 2013 9:30 p.m.

Apoptosis says... #11

AKAJesus has it right. This way you couldn't use hexproof through Witchbane Orb to prevent discard and loss of life. Although, maybe you wouldn't want there to be an overload option built into the card, that would allow you to build specifically so you could use Witchbane Orb as a way to protect yourself once the swap happens (unless of course you're forced to sacrifice the orb as one of your permanents)....

March 24, 2013 10:23 p.m.

AKAJesus says... #12

It dosen't look like its an aura, just a plain old enchantment, so Witchbane Orb wouldn't work anyhow. It isn't attached to a player, it just targets one.

Poor Sport (3)

sorcery

Poor Sport cannot be countered.

If you are winning the game, point and laugh in your opponents face. Insult them and knock their library onto the floor. Cards knocked onto the floor this way are exiled from the game.

If you are losing the game, rip up all permanents your opponents control. Spells you play this turn cannot be countered. You may play cards from your hand without paying their converted mana costs. You may cast cards in your graveyard as though they were in your hand. All creatures you control gain haste, double strike, hexproof, and get +20/+0 until end of turn.

Arachnarchist says... #17

Enchantment beats Land in the run off, 51.3 to 48.7.

A bit of an upset but perhaps expected when you think about it. Most people who voted artifact in the first poll probably switched to enchantment for a similar effect. The creature vote was probably split, same with Instant/sorcery.

Next up is color, but the vote won't start until April 2nd:

Of the colored stuff we've gotten, we've gotten white, blue and green. Maybe a red, black, or possibly RB enchantment?

March 25, 2013 8:59 a.m.

Grotski says... #19

Its both amazing and unfortunate that the vote was once again that close, amazing cos it happened twice and unfortunate cos half of us go home disappointed (but not me, go #teamenchantment!)

Looks like they'll probably be going in for mono-colored. Especially if the card is due out for a set after the RtR block. Wizards is unlikely to run a multicolour themed block directly after RtR.

Personally I'll be voting black or blue for the enchantment as, in my experience, they have the most Johnny-flavored enchantments with highly entertaining interactions; Grave Pact , Omnipotence or Overburden (Yes, I'll be squeezing that into every possible comment I make here)

Not sure why the vote is delayed, I suppose it gives influential MTG figures the change to preach their ideas?

bb or pay 2 life and discard 2 cards: counter target spell

flavor text: 'Jace has made this personal.' - Chandra

March 25, 2013 11:53 a.m.

Baddie says... #21

why would Chandra be on the flavor text of a black card?

March 25, 2013 12:11 p.m.

Zen_Toombs says... #22

I think that we should go for a red or black enchantment, assuming we can't do one that's multicolor. We already have a green creature and a U/W instant.

What I plan to vote for is Red, because I feel like there should be more neat red enchantments. The rest of the colors already have great ones, red should get in on the game too.

March 25, 2013 12:26 p.m.

Zen_Toombs says... #23

@Baddie: I think gufymike meant to say "4UUU" and "UU or pay 2 life and discard 2 cards". Also, I guess Chandra would be on the flavor text because of the UST-laden combat they have with each other?

@gufymike - that wouldn't be either what the meta needs nor would it be that great in almost any format. And in the only format that it's playable in (Commander) it would make blue more OP, seeing as it now has a repeatable Counterspell and Force of Will , and the best part is that it doesn't take cards away forever like Force of Will does!

I don't think that the card we make will have a CMC greater than 3/4 - they want it to be playable in formats other than Show and Tell legacy decks.

underground factory

artifact rigger land

underground factory etb:s tapped.

tap: add 1 to your mana pool 1: underground factory becomes a 1/1 artifact creature until end of turn. 2,tap: assemble a contraption (put a token onto the battlefield thats a copy of target rigger creature you control. that token is a contraption in addition to its other types.when a rigger creature you control dies, sacrifice all contraptions you control.)

Here's another idea:

THE BALANCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH BW

Enchantment.

If THE BALANCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH is destroyed, return it to the battlefield at your end step.

Any player may pay BB to put a black counter or pay WW to put a white counter on THE BALANCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH.

During each players upkeep, all players lose X life where X equals the number of black counters and gain X life where X equals the number of white counters on THE BALANCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH.

Zen_Toombs Red enchantment like Mana Flare ? I miss mana burn and that card. I like alternate win conditions, beating people up with creatures and/or direct damage is boring. With that said, here is one that might work:

Fried Beings 1renchantmentDoes one point of damage to each creature every turn it is on the battlefield.

Red enchantment? How about this:

Reign of Chaos RR

Enchantment

During each player's upkeep, all players discard their hands and shuffle their graveyard into their library, then draw 7 cards.

March 25, 2013 9:41 p.m.

That would completely break mill decks, unless they had a way to destroy it. I love it.

March 25, 2013 10:16 p.m.

@ Apoptosis... I LOVE IT.

It's a bit busted for mono-red though. Just make your deck chock full of burn and go to town.

Possible fixes:

Cumulative upkeep: 1 life

Cumulative upkeep: sacrifice a permenant

Hmmm... It's late. I'll sleep on it.

March 26, 2013 12:06 a.m.

AKAJesus says... #34

The cumulative upkeep: Sacrifice a creature. It balances the card better, and can be comboed with a token making card to supply creatures. Maybe Assemble the Legion . Mill decks will have to find a way to exile cards instead of just putting them in the graveyard.

March 26, 2013 6:49 a.m.

Zen_Toombs says... #35

I like the "cumulative upkeep: Sacrifice a creature". However, I think something else that would help the card is to "shuffle the cards from his or her hand into his or her library, then draws that many cards" a la Molten Psyche . Red doesn't have much graveyard recursion, which this sorta is.

It could work as is with that upkeep cost though - possibly still fantastic at 1RR/RRR, maybe even 2RR/1RRR.

In short:

Apoptosis. You. I like you.

March 26, 2013 9:57 a.m.

acbooster says... #36

Instead of having a cumulative upkeep, perhaps just keeping it as "At the beginning of your upkeep, pay X. If you don't, destroy ~". That way they don't need to ressurrect an old mechanic for just 1 card.

March 26, 2013 1:49 p.m.

Apoptosis says... #37

What mechanic are you calling old?! I remember it like yesterday! gets out of rocking chair and shakes his cane

March 26, 2013 2:02 p.m.

meecht says... #38

Apoptosis, that sounds similar to Teferi's Puzzle Box . I like.

How about something like "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay X life. Each player shuffles X cards from their hand into their library and draws that many cards minus 1." The paying of life and losing a card sounds a bit more red-ish. Or it could trigger on each upkeep and allow the active player to pay the life for the effect.

March 26, 2013 2:45 p.m.

Apoptosis says... #39

meecht I wasn't thinking about a red card drawing engine. I was thinking about a red enchantment that causes chaos by affecting all players the same way. And I don't think it's too unbalanced at RR. After all your opponent draws too and if they get enchantment hate they can destroy it or alter it (think Rest in Peace , this would actually work like a mill since everyone would be discarding to exile). Maybe Reign of Chaos should be returned to hand after the draw... this way Blue could theoretically counter it to break a cycle. I don't know.

Want a different example? How about:

Accelerated Erosion RR1

Enchantment

R or 3, tap: destroy target land. Target opponent gains control of Accelerated Erosion.

"Even mountains are eventually ground to dust" -Chandra

apt142 says... #40

I sort of miss cummulative upkeep. And that card sounds pretty awesome. What if the upkeep was the perk here?

3RR - Consuming Blaze

During each player's upkeep, put a blaze counter on Consuming Blaze. That player discards their hand and draws cards equal to the number of counters on Consuming Blaze.

Players skip their draw phases.

3: Add a blaze counter to Consuming Blaze. Any player may play this ability.

March 26, 2013 3:13 p.m.

Zen_Toombs says... #41

Apoptosis: The fact that the original was a draw engine was what made it super busted.Red does need access to card advantage though, at least in Commander.

As for your new card: I like that it's an enchantment that taps, but Accelerated Erosion seems mean in Commander.

Player 1: R tap: I blow up Player 3's land! I give Accelerated Erosion to Player 2!Player 3: :(Player 2: 3 tap: I blow up another player 3's land! I give Accelerated Erosion to player 1!Player 3: :((

Repeat.

Zen_Toombs I've never played commander. Since I came back from retirement this past October just standard. But way back in the day (circa 1995), for fun we played Emperor (two teams of three, emperor on each side has 30 life and is flanked by a commander at 20, you have to kill your opposing commander before attacking the emperor, emperor can target players with a range of two and can pass creatures to their commanders), Two Headed Giant (teams of 2, shared life of 40), or my favorite: Around the World (big circle with as many players as wanted, spells have a range of two players to either side and creatures can only attack players to the immediate left or right) -god was that fun Syphon Soul to gain 8 life, Earthquake everyone, and Rogue Skycaptain that you smack with then pass of two players away, which they then pass off two further away and the next thing you know your skycaptain has travelled the world! Ha!)

And if you liked those games, you just might be a fan of EDH! It's definitely a fun format.

Sleeves! That's another thing I can't stand. Way back in the day they weren't allowed. I've used them several times now and hate them. It's like trying to touch a beautiful woman while wearing gloves (to keep my analogy above board). I'm never using the damn things again.

I might like EDH, but my local shop doesn't run it: just limited, standard, and occasionally legacy.

March 26, 2013 4 p.m.

Rayenous says... #45

@Apoptosis

I hate sleeves as well... unfortunately, at FNM, you have to allow your opponent to shuffle your deck.

No way I'm letting some of them shuffle my deck they way I've seen them treat other peoples cards.

March 26, 2013 4:06 p.m.

gufymike says... #46

EDH is fun, but I am a great fan of 60 card theme deck that meet rules for type 1/2 (today it would be standard/legacy/modern/extended 1/1.5/2), shop rules included no proxies. In massive multiplayer, no restrictions on who to attack or how far spells reach, each player started with 20 life. These games took long enough and made it hard for combo decks to do a lot. The designs allowed for a lot of different decks with a minimal amount of available cards. It was competitive but it wasn't cut throat. I miss those days.
