Just curious where this deck type got its name

In the Alara block 3 colour combinations were given names, known as 'shards' (hence the set name - shards of alara). The shard name for blue, white, black was Esper.

I mean that as combinations of 3 colours, not 3 different combinations of colours.

The Shards are

Esper -Blue, White Black

Grixis- Red, Black, Blue

Bant- Blue, Green White

Jund - Red, Green, Black

Then there was a cycle of cards from Apocalypse that were mono-colored but had a kicker that could be paid with mana from the enemy colors of the card itself. and that were the wedges get there name

But anyway

Dega- Red/ White, White Degavolver

Raka/America- Red, White, Blue Rakavolver

Necra/Junk- White, Green, Black Necravolver

Ana/BUG- Black, Blue, Green Anavolver

Ceta/RUG- Red, Blue, Green Cetavolver

I see so it just represents which color combos you are using in your control deck. Thanks. Just picked the game up a few months ago and still trying to understand all the terminology.

Don't fret too much on terminology. I've been playing for over a decade and probably don't have half of them down. New cards get new names all the time.

@ masterosok it's not just control, it's just the colors of the deck. Esper is the color scheme and the control part is just that deck archetype
