Trying to get back in MTG after an year

General forum

Hello guys! After an year of privation I decided to step back in my local store and start all over again with magic! Since I wanted something to play at FNM this summer I picked the Event Deck "Landslide Charge" because the newest cards I have are from the Ravnica block that it's out of the rotation insertsadfacehere Now, I'm not a player who wants to spend a lot on decks, but I just want to have fun with them and have them a little bit more organized than a basic event deck.
So, I'd like to ask to you (people of tappedout!), have you got some tips for a player who came back into this awesome world?
Thank you so much in advance! Have a good (tapping) day! :)

Hi! I moved this to the general forum because it's not about any format in particular. It therefore doesn't belong in the standard, modern, legacy forum etc. It's also not about any specific deck so it doesn't belong in deck help.

Hopefully in the general forum you should receive general magic feedback.

To answer your question - I'm a big fan of the modern format and would recommend getting into that. It doesn't rotate like standard and has a very wide card pool. Decks can cost a lot of money, but more casual decks can cost well under $100.

Find out what formats people at your LGS play and build decks for those. Modern is very fun, as well as pauper, which if people at your LGS play will allow you to build a very low budget deck.

ChiefBell thank you very much! I'm sorry, I thought it was the right place to post it, it will never happen again!I thought about modern too but the fact is that where I live most of the people play T2 and FNM is where more of the fun happens. I might think about a casual modern deck, but for the time beign I think I'll stay with Standard

Well this is the perfect time to get into Standard. With Magic Origins being brought into the mix, it should allow for a diverse and fun metagame. Prerelease is this weekend. Study up on sealed and just go have fun.

I too recently returned to Magic not long ago. I used a combination of FNM, Draft and this saturday will add Pre-release to build my collection back up. I bought into a budget deck to start me off ($20 singles) and then just went from there using the cards I got at events to slowly better my deck which turned into 2 and in the future likely more. Trying to branch out into different formats but I like STD and limited for now.

So I guess my tip would be use events to your advantage. You can usually get deals on the packs as well as sometimes the guys who already have a ton of cards will nab the rare from their pack and pass it to a random player in need. Hope it helps.

I'd recommend getting into modern. It's pretty expensive to get into competitively, but once you have a deck, it won't rotate (hopefully something key doesn't get banned) and will maintain value in case you want to get out. With standard, you have to be cautious of things rotating every now and then and having to invest in more cards. There are also draft, sealed, and limited which are all very fun.
