Hey TappedOut Community, just thought I'd ask what everyone thought of this news. It's not confirmed yet, but if it's true we're going to have a pretty powerful card on our hands. http://www.gatheringmagic.com/2010/08/predictions-and-conjectures-scars-of-mirrodin/ Follow the link and scroll down to Sword of Love and Hate.

Thanks

Awww, I was looking forward to seeing what they would do with Karn, Silver Golem as a Planeswalker.

I'm pretty sure that's just conjecture. Also, I wouldn't name it 'love and hate,' it sounds too much like Sailormoon.

Lately I've been thinking of creatures that would make the best commander deck. I've made a lot so far; you can check out my page to see just how many. But I'm stuck wondering-what is the best commander deck?

My opinion of "the best" is how easily and quickly it could win - which is why I make a lot of decks around Infect creatures - my favorite being my The plane of New Phyrexia deck. But I'm curious as to what other EDH players think.

So, what's the best commander deck idea you've come up with/played against?

When Griselbrand was legal, I never beat him, not even once. My best deck is a Zur the Enchanter deck. It just has so many lock downs and good recovery, as well as good board presence. it can just win out of nowhere and make the game ridiculously hard for everyone but me.

I've been playing Kaalia for almost a year and converted it to duel commander just to have access to Griselbrand. He's pretty bonkers, I agree.

I think this deck is pretty awesome, but Kaalia decks are pretty straightforward, the way to win is pretty obvious.

My best deck is Sydri and her metal army while my "best" deck is Vorel and his Merry Counters. Sydri because it was designed to be competitive and Vorel because it's sheer power level. The only way to make the Vorel deck better is to add Laboratory Maniac to the deck as an alt win-con.

My Karn, Silver Golem is probably one of the best decks i have ever had the privilege of building, fine tuning and playing. Also Empress Galina not used a whole lot but she just seems slow then BAM you control all the commanders and fun cards in play and in their decks. Would love to see these 2 decks face off would be interesting to say the least.

If you really want a "best deck", then you are looking for Hermit Druid combo decks. They consistently kill on turn 3, and are resilient to pretty much everything.

None of my decks really meet your expectations, I consider a good EDH deck to be entertaining and the game should be a set of landing threats and removing your opponents with lots of politics among the players.

My best deck would be a deck which I can have fun with, infect is not a fun mechanic.

Marchesa, the Black Rose allows me to do some busted stuff and often keeps me ahead the whole game. You can't win too quickly, so there's plenty of fun to be had as your opponents struggle against your immortal armies.

I've won turn three in 1v1 with my Kaalia of the Vast deck. Master of Cruelties really breaks her abilities

my other fast deck is Animar, Soul of Elements. lots of creature tutors to find Deadeye Navigator, Palinchron/Great Whale and creatures like Inferno Titan and Purphoros, God of the Forge for insta-win. the deck doesn't need infinite, but can win out of nowhere in large multiplayer games. Leyline of Anticipation and Vedalken Orrery are great additions to win on the turn before your turn once everyone is tapped out

Taxing Your Life Away is far and away my best and favorite EDH. I'm a student, so I don't have much money, but almost every extra cent I've had over the past year has gone into that deck, and it really, really shows.

My name is pretty much synonymous with Dominus - Dreamcrusher Edition.

It's not the best deck in existence, but it does well enough.

Among the best decks are Hermit Druid combo (which uses Scion of the Ur-Dragon), Zur the Enchanter, Edric, Spymaster of Trest, and Arcum Dagsson. Animar, Soul of Elements and Sharuum the Hegemon are also good.

Ironically, my Kruphix, God of Horizons group hug combo deck is my best deck. It just hugs then combos off. The winning combo is just a bunch of interactions smushed together that can easily be stopped. There are multiple win conditions, however, so it wins often. It's a blast to play with, and my opponents don't mind it since it's a glass cannon.

This entire topic has way too many variables. I suppose the criteria for what makes a deck "best" has to be established before anything else.

I tend to look for a certain qualities when building my EDH decks:

  1. It has to be able to win. I know, any deck can win. That is not what I mean. I mean there has to be a distinct direction the deck plays towards in order to obtain victory.

  2. It has to be balanced for multiplayer games.I play group games with 4+ people every week. My deck has to be able to establish itself as being capable without coming off as completely dominate. I have a deck ( Uril, the Miststalker ) that I don't play very often because it is either too strong for the playgroup (when I play with newer players), or too much of a threat (when I play with more experienced players). I basically get stuck in a situation where I have to kill the person I think is the biggest threat by turn 5 (which isn't fun for anyone), or play down my deck so that I am not the first target of everyone else at the table. On the other end, I have a deck ( Skullbriar, the Walking Grave ) that might be decent in a 1v1, but should never win a multiplayer game.

  3. It has to have some variance.A lot of my decks are very 1 dimensional. They have a focused goal and play to that ends. One of the reasons I started playing so many decks is because I didn't want to play the same game every single time. I have a few decks though that can pull of victories from a lot of different angles. There is no "win-con" card or "power combo" I rely on to get a victory. My Jenara, Asura of War and Kresh the Bloodbraided are examples of decks I have that don't end the same way every time.

For me, my best deck is Karador, Ghost Chieftain. It is not my most powerful, but it is a deck I feel like I always have a chance of winning with, I don't always win the same way with, and that I can reliably play successfully in a multiplayer game.

December 16, 2014 3:52 p.m.

My Prossh deck always makes for interesting games. I'll often purposefully make risky plays because either awesome things happen that are fun for everyone, or someone gets the satisfaction of blowing up a mildly elaborate plan. Big plays are just fun regardless of if they're stopped soon enough or not. It's basically just designed to do big impressive things. But while mine is very mid-rangy and has several cards that can end the game, to make it competitive Prossh should probably be a combo deck.

There are too many variables in multiplayer formats to have a definitive best deck. However, I would definitely say that Hermit Druid combo, Animar, Zur, Edric, and maybe Arcum are up there.

Kaalia, on the other hand, has to survive three other players in order to do anything. That means no counterspells, no removal, no wraths, nothing. And even then, it's not much better than casting a reanimation spell on a powerful creature. Kaalia is easy to deal with and hard to actually attack with. While it's certainly a powerful effect, it's too easy to beat to be the best deck in the format.
