Theros Dual lands.

There's been some talk about the Theros dual lands in my local shop. I've been told they might be uncommon dual lands or maybe even lands like Vivid Grove . I'm very confused...

There is no official information about Theros Cards yet. However, one of the articles in the preview week for M14 revealed there will be a cycle of dual lands in Theros (source: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/ld/254) People at your gaming shop are speculating about what the cycle will be.

They'd have to be a cycle of rare dual lands. I don't see Wizards skipping duals in a core set, then not printing powerful or flexible rare duals in the next block. Then again, RTR block did some dangerous things to the quality of mana bases in Standard.

Could we see a cycle of lands based off an unreprinted timeshifted dual land? I would love to see interaction with Grove of the Burnwillows lands!

I was hoping they'd bring back cards like Nimbus Maze (I could even see that cycle working thematically with Theros's Greco-Roman flavor), but I doubt they would. Their logic behind not printing the check lands was that they were too powerful when combined with the shocks. The Nimbus Maze cycle would just rehash that problem and make it worse because those lands don't ever enter the battlefield tapped.

MagicalHacker says... #6

Yeah, there are only three cycles really that I'm excited about: Nimbus Maze , Grove of the Burnwillows , and River of Tears .

You're right about the problem of Nimbus Maze , but I feel like the grove cycle is easily do-able in Theros.

LayWhoZayHer says... #7

Lol, I hope they don't since I'm a player on a budget! Grove of the Burnwillows are $20.00 each!

I'm so sorry.

I tend to do a lot of proxying to compensate for my light wallet.

July 21, 2013 12:34 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #11

But they're not bringing back any dual land! They're making their own new cycle of dual lands.

July 21, 2013 12:40 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #12

What makes you say that they won't bring back a Timeshifted land?

July 21, 2013 12:44 p.m.

nicktack15 says... #13

I believe they'll just bring back the normal rare dual lands, Clifftop Retreat Hinterland Harbor and so on. That's my thoughts.

July 21, 2013 12:49 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #14

One of my friends, and he's been playing since 7th Edition, and he does his research and he told me that they won't reprint any dual lands. They're reprinting new dual lands.

July 21, 2013 12:56 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #15

Not reprinting new duel lands but printing. Not reprinting.

July 21, 2013 12:58 p.m.

nicktack15 says... #16

New dual lands would be cool. But how would they be "new"?

July 21, 2013 1 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #17

Like a new cycle.

July 21, 2013 1 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #18

A timeshifted-land-based cycle would be a new cycle. D:

LayWhoZayHer says... #19

I was thinking like a brand new dual land cycle that they just designed instead of bringing back an old dual land cycle. That's what I hope for anyway.

Krayhaft says... #20

Enemy colored man-lands, a la worldwake style.

You heard it here first, folks!

July 21, 2013 1:08 p.m.

Each cycle of dual lands (since the Bayou era) has had some sort of restriction on it that balanced the fact that it tapped for more than one color. Selesnya Guildgate comes into play tapped, and Clifftop Retreat does the same unless you control the right basics/shocks, etc...

Assuming the dual lands in Theros will be a new cycle, they will also have some sort of new restriction on them that will either make them harder to use or less valuable to use.

I'd personally like to see something like:

T: Add (1) to your mana pool

T: Add RG to your mana pool. ~ Doesn't untap during your next untap step.

Seems like it could be potentially broken by turn 1 "ramping", but it would be fun nonetheless.

July 21, 2013 1:09 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #22

I'd be soo happy if they brought those back instead of other dual lands, if they ever do reprint a dual land cycle.

July 21, 2013 1:10 p.m.

Krayhaft says... #23

I'd say that'd be a pretty strong land, since it gives you access to 2-drops on turn 1.

I think my biggest gripe with wizards is the fact that good dual lands are defaulted at rare rarity. It makes it hard to acquire parts for the most important card types in a deck.

July 21, 2013 1:11 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #24

I agree, landgrafb. I'm praying for that,,,

2-Drop on turn 1, 4-drop on turn 2, (5-drop if you played a mana dork). Hells yeah, print that crazy shit wizards.

Man, what I'd do for a Klondike Bar...

July 21, 2013 1:18 p.m.

IzexD says... #28

My theory is that they could possibly reprint fetches in Theros Block.

July 21, 2013 1:19 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #29

HELL F*CKIN' NO! They're $50.00 each!

July 21, 2013 1:21 p.m.

Philliam says... #30

I've heard filter lands from shadowmoor/eventide. I also wouldn't be surprised if they did some sort of legendary duals.

Excuse my language...

Yeah, phillthy_rich, I can work with that...

July 21, 2013 1:22 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #33

Meh... IzexD, I wouldn't mind the Mirage fetchlands.

July 21, 2013 1:25 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #34

It's a good thing we're talking about this, since I really don't know the different names of dual lands.

July 21, 2013 1:27 p.m.

Philliam says... #35

July 21, 2013 1:31 p.m.

Krayhaft says... #36

They definitely won't reprint fetchlands in Theros.

The reasoning for not reprinting core set duals in M14 was because the mana bases were too good in decks.

Putting fetches in Theros would give us a standard with both fetches and shocks. That's a really high quality mana base.

Not that I'm opposed to it. I just wish wizards would print quality dual lands at uncommon....

Krayhaft, Your a saint, A SAINT!

July 21, 2013 1:33 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #38

Ditto, Krayhaft. Uncommon Duals would be fantastic.

And I think with the new legendary rules, that land would be pretty good for a rare land. Look at how many decks didn't play Mox Opal because it was legendary...

July 21, 2013 1:35 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #39

Lol, can I shake your hand, Krayhaft?

July 21, 2013 1:37 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #40

You're* sorry, had to correct myself.

July 21, 2013 1:38 p.m.

bfarber91 says... #41

It may be something based off of the lorwyn to eventide duel lands like Cascade Bluffs or the tribal duel lands as I feel there will be a lot such as minitour, gorgan, hero, etc.. like Auntie's Hovel

July 21, 2013 2:21 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #42

bfarber91, then Gruul Aggro's Burning-Tree Emissary would be too powerful. Cast Burning-Tree Emissary , use Fire-Lit Thicket for R or G, add RGG, RRG, RGR, or GRG mana into your mana pool.

July 21, 2013 2:57 p.m.

yamicannon says... #43

landgrafb i believe they already used the "Doesn't untap during your next untap step." on a land they in my own personal guess i think they will be trying to find a new mechanic for the new lands that will complement the new block but thats my 2 cents

Devonin says... #44

I'm amused at the concept of wanting "quality" dual lands at uncommon. I mean, I guess they can just utterly destroy any kind of balance of quality to rarity?

The base dual land has both basic land types, enters the battlefield untapped, and has no restrictions on mana generation. Those are obviously way too good. And won't ever be printed that exact way again.

At rare, you get all of the above except there's a conditional on being able to use them right away. Taking 2 damage is the only one that allows you to hang on to having the basic land types. All the rest lose fetchability and also need you to have a basic land of the right type, have a creature of the right type, play them fast etc

That's actually a pretty hefty set of drawbacks for cards that are still sitting at rare.

At uncommon, you get all of the above except there's an additional restriction on their use. They either just straight up come into play tapped no matter what Elfhame Palace , or you get something like Cloudcrest Lake that you can use right away but only on alternating turns without some outside trick.

The best dual lands I could ever imagine them printing at uncommon would be to make something that had basic land types and so were fetchable, but mandatorily came into play tapped no matter what -and- would probably also need to be pain lands.

I mean, no-basic-land-type painlands are at rare. The ability to generate multiple colours of mana on one land is incredibly powerful.

All we can do is pray, Devonin.

July 21, 2013 3:12 p.m.

bfarber91 says... #46

haha yeah ok Burning-Tree Emissary with those lands could be devastating in game play

July 21, 2013 3:19 p.m.

bfarber91 says... #47

What if they brought back things such as Tainted Peak

July 21, 2013 3:23 p.m.

LayWhoZayHer says... #48

Mehh... All I can see is Wizards making new uncommon dual lands with a small restriction.

Like...

???? Enters the battlefield tapped.

T: Add one colorless mana in your mana pool.T: Add R or G in your mana pool.

the3rdH0kage says... #49

I'm hoping they reprint the River of Tears style land

July 21, 2013 4:17 p.m.

IAmKingTony says... #50

The lands aren't reprints. They're new lands and they WILL be playable, at least that's what they were touted as in the Wizards article about them.

Legendary versions of the original duals would make sense.
