General forum

so, i traded a spanish tarmogoyf the other day, and just now i noticed that on the "type" bar it says : "Creature : lhurgoyf"

the : symbol annoys me, cuz i havent seen that on any other card, and when im searching for pictures of other spanish cards, i can only see the - symbol between creature and creature type

That's French and yeah, it should definitely be a dash, not colons.

oh, my bad, not so good with languages... but that : is still annoying..

google "french mtg" and look at images of cards. it looks like french cards use the colon instead of the dash. it looks legit.

this is cool though, i learned something today.

November 24, 2014 9:35 a.m.

-Fulcrum says... #6

The colon won't tell you if it's fake or not. For some reason, all French creature cards have a colon instead of a dash. There's no reason to suspect it's fake for that reason.

ahh, thx guys! Well, i thought it was spanish x_x and spanish with colon isn't right. so.

thx for clearing this up x)

@ChiefBell Oh come on. You're both assuming that he's American and drawing the conclusion that the reason he's not familiar with French is because he's American. It's kind of stupid to blindly go with the fad of hating America just because it's popular to do so.

November 24, 2014 11:32 a.m.

The French language uses lots of dashes, so it makes sense to use a colon instead to be less confusing (My girlfriend speaks French)

November 24, 2014 11:33 a.m.

ChiefBell says... #11

CrazyLittleGuy - Almost everyone on this site is American so that was a fairly safe assumption. And yes I do assume that, given that the American education system is notorious for failing pupils. I don't hate America because of some fad, I just laugh at its failing social system.

November 24, 2014 11:41 a.m.

Nigeltastic says... #12

I think it just shows pure ignorance to make a statement that the American education system comes even remotely close to consistently failing its students. America is so large and diverse that making blanket statements about it that are close to consistently true is hard.

November 24, 2014 11:58 a.m.

@ChiefBell You know that if you make such a statement, you need to back it up with some sort of evidence.

November 24, 2014 12:05 p.m.

Unforgivn_II says... #14

Lay off Chief. There is literally nothing to gain by taking shots at America in a forum where "Almost everyone" is American. Social commentary is falling on deaf ears here.

November 24, 2014 12:08 p.m.

@ChiefBell Laughing at it's "failing social system" is the fad. People on the internet love to hate America, especially Americans; but the reason they always give is that "America's failing." They never prove it.

November 24, 2014 12:09 p.m.

Blakkhand says... #16

Like, I am patriotic about America and all that, but even I have to say the education system sucks, at least in the public schools. We spend over 10k per year on each student (I think the most of all countries), yet our ranking is still miserably low. Gotta love dat government bureaucracy.

November 24, 2014 12:11 p.m.

It's pretty widely known (and information on this is readily available) that certain areas of the US have appalling literacy rates, that the US has a massive drop-out problem, and that the US' curriculum is woefully outdated in many jurisdictions.

The US is known to have a somewhat low education index, as measured by the UN. See here. This is driven by the factors I discussed above and a low rate of tertiary education. See here.

For opinion pieces and other articles you can try here, and here.

Cba to do other social systems because that's not relevant to this thread. It's not a fad. There's plenty of evidence to support this.

November 24, 2014 12:13 p.m.

@Blakkhand

You're kind of correct, America has nearly double the average OECD spending on tertiary school education (~$26,000 to the OECD average of ~$14,000), but "miserably low" is a hell of an overstatement, considering the United States has the fifth best educated adult populace - in terms of, at minimum, tertiary education - at 43.1%.

November 24, 2014 12:17 p.m.

Blakkhand says... #19

lol, I kinda feel bad for the OP now. Also, private schools are what it's at.

November 24, 2014 12:17 p.m.

For the record, the Chief is right. I have lived in America all my life. Ive been to most of the states due to being a Marine brat. The school system does suck. It doesn't allow intelligent, exceptional students to advance at their own pace/ a faster pace, and schools don't do much to help students that are, well, less than exceptional. It also frustrates me that people seem to not have any desire to learn more. they are perfectly content in their own ignorance. I apologize if this is derailing the original thread, but seriously.

November 24, 2014 12:25 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #21

CrazyLittleGuy - But that puts the US like 10% behind a good deal of European countries in terms of tertiary education attendance.

Also, this is focusing on generic issues. There are deeper embedded social exclusionary principles at work too. Issues of ethnic exclusion are also frequently brought up in regards to average attainment of various demographics.

November 24, 2014 12:25 p.m.

Blakkhand says... #22

@CrazyLittleGuy You can't really base your judgment on the current populace, as a significant portion of the decrease in quality of education has occurred relatively recently, and thus is not yet reflected in the population as a whole.

Wait aren't you from Germany, ChiefBell?

November 24, 2014 12:37 p.m.

UK, (German mother). Happy to admit education is SHIT here.

November 24, 2014 12:38 p.m.

Nigeltastic says... #26

Okay, well as long as there aren't any delusions. The U.S. has a higher education index than either of those two.

November 24, 2014 12:42 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #27

"Happy" was the wrong word in that sentence. I'm not "happy" to admit it. I readily acknowledge the problems. Regardless, being aware of our social issues is better than pretending they don't exist.

November 24, 2014 12:44 p.m.

Gidgetimer says... #28

I had concerns about the fact that "Lhurgoyf" wasn't capitalized, even after it was established that French cards use a colon instead of a dash. But it appears that too is an idiosyncrasy of French cards.

November 24, 2014 12:50 p.m.

But, the U.S. is leading the planet in incarcerated individuals! Haha! Seriously though, looking at how America compares to other developed nations, we have our defense spending and national debt to brag about. Otherwise, we trail other countries when it comes to quality education, healthcare, etc.

As a father for the second time around, it also is appalling to me the lack of benefits given to parents, ille est, maternity/paternity leave. We had a baby on Saturday, and I'm back to work today. My wife was able to get 8 weeks of leave. I understand that each company is different, but that's the issue. Many EU countries are required 12 plus weeks of leave.

America has a lot of things backwards; capitalism be damned. It's sad when Monsanto can purchase a bill to be passed by Congress. I could rant on... Off the soap box.

Regardless of the political and social BS, I'm a proud patriot who served his country as a United States Marine. I'll gladly defend her.

I've heard the Mid-West is nice.

November 24, 2014 12:57 p.m.

Haha! Born and raised in NW Indiana (former and current governor are morons), moved to SW Michigan, just over the state line. It's alright; I'd rather be in Portland/Seattle or New Mexico/Arizona. Snow sucks!

November 24, 2014 1:03 p.m.

aeonstoremyliver: There is a documentary on Netflix called "GMO OMG" or something like that. It talks about Monsanto's activities in the food industry, it might interest you

November 24, 2014 1:11 p.m.

And don't forget that the current public school system in America was created to teach students the tools the would need to succeed at a meaningless industrial job, around the time of the industrial revolution.

Yay, money.

why did this turn into a fight about american life? Just tell the guy if it's fake or not! If you really want to know, go to gatherer and check their french printing of the card!

GoldGhost012 says... #35

The Midwest is a nice place, if you can get used to the snow. Especially around the Great Lakes.

aeonstoremyliver, trust me when you say the LP knows nothing about snow compared to the UP. Where my family lives in the LP, there's no more snow. We still have a few feet in the UP

Yay, contributing to derailment. Go me.

I don't think any country has an adequate education system, at least to my knowledge. I think standardizing learning doesn't work in practice, but the only way to "measure" it is to standardize it, so there's no good way to implement more personalized education at a level below university.

But shit, I'm an angsty teenage nihilist anyway so I'm not convinced there's any way to implement a working system, particularly when we so blindly follow the precedents set by our mildly-glorified founding fathers.

I wrote a big editorial about getting rid of the Constitution, and believe me I could go on for pages on flaws in the US government through the eyes of a mildly-interested and highly-opinionated 16-year-old male.

Baltec says... #37

This turned into a big debate about the American education system when I believe the original comment was aimed more towards the aspect of Americans concerning the ignorance of foreign culture. This is one aspect of Americans that I believe to be generally true, but I always find it odd that we get ridiculed for lack of understanding of European culture when we are not European.

November 24, 2014 5:43 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #38

I was really just pointing out that not knowing the difference between French and Spanish is absurd. More so when you consider that Spanish culture is a big deal in the US. The two languages are exceedingly different.

Also I would hope that when people trade for cards they actually know which language they're in. That seems basic.

November 24, 2014 5:49 p.m.

Baltec says... #39

We also have to consider we know nothing about OP. Where it may seem absurd to a college graduate that someone can't distinguish between two languages that they never use or encounter, that may not be the case for say, a junior high or high school student.

Also, here in Ohio Spanish culture is not "a big deal".
