Bit of background here: I've got 2 Young Pyromancer on the field and he has a Judge's Familiar . I cast Serum Visions and he sacrifices the Familiar and counters it. I get my 2 Elemental tokens. Then this happens:

Strongandsilent: get rid of elemental
TitansFTW: no
Strongandsilent: i countered it
TitansFTW: Pyro triggers when you cast a spell
Strongandsilent: i countered ur sorcery
TitansFTW: it doesn't have to resolve
Strongandsilent: get rid of them
now
TitansFTW: No. I cast a sorcery, so the two Young Pyromancers trigger and I get two tokens
Strongandsilent: but i countered the sorcery
with judge's familiar
TitansFTW: Yes, but I still cast it.
Strongandsilent: i countered it
TitansFTW: Countering only stops it from resolving
Strongandsilent: it never gets cast then
TitansFTW: Yes it does.
Strongandsilent sets counter life to 19 (-1).
Strongandsilent sets counter life to 18 (-1).
Strongandsilent: noooo
Strongandsilent has left the game.

Why don't people listen to you when you try to explain things? That irks me. What irks me more is that this guy is so closed minded that he quits when I try to explain that things don't work the way I want them to. It's these kinds of people that make Magic just that little bit less fun, whether online or in real life. So, have any of you had experiences like this, whether online or in real life? I'm interested to see if this kind of 'I'm right, you're wrong' attitude is common, or whether the people you know are more willing to listen and learn.

i had this issue with something once. i couldn't understand how the Blood Artist was dealing me damage in a situation where everything died at once. i just needed the judge to confirm what he was saying was true cause. i had a feeling he wasn't lieing, but i also know people will lie and cheat for W's so i had to cover myself. the judge explained it and i took my L

Good thing the judge didn't try to give you his D. That could have been embarrassing.

I wasted 5 minutes explaining how Fireball isn't "Deals 1 damage to each target" to my opponent.

I see this situation a lot when I'm judging an FNM and its a couple of kids that don't know the rules...

If I were in your position, I would have explained that Casting is the act of putting it on the stack, and resolving is the act of taking what is on the stack and making it effect the game before you told him that countering only stops the resolution.

You have to be very thorough with stupid people, otherwise they'll think that you're cheating or something because they don't know any better.

This is also why I don't play cockatrice anymore, there's no judge, so stupid people roam free to make play mistakes and claim them as game rules.

Believe me, I was about to tell him the difference between casting and resolving but he quit before I could.

That's too bad he didn't stick around to learn. I've been playing for awhile and I still have more experienced players correct me on a certain play or I need to ask them to explain how their combo works. I don't mind because it helps me see new interactions and become a better player. And most players, like you, are quite happy to explain.

But I would imagine the younger gamers are more likely to think they have it all figured out and react like your opponent did. There's probably no trick to avoiding them online, either.

I've many times had to call a judge over to explain either to my opponent of myself what should happen. I've had a guy try to tell me that him sacrificing 1 creature will tap both of my Desecration Demon s. I told him no thats not how it works, and he insisted he was right. Had to call a judge over, and he was able to explain to him that those triggers happen separately from each other.

Also, I had an encounter recently that was easily talked about and resolved with no judge needed.

I've never had anybody straight up quit playing a game in person, this tends to happen online more so than in person. But it's just like you said, some people are idiots. close minded, fucktarded, idiots. This is the main reason why I wanted to get everyones info for cockatrice... so i run into less close minded, fucktarded, idiots.

Yep, these are exactly the kinds of situations that led to me writing the article I did. Honestly, there's pretty much no way to get through to these kinds of people. Best to just let them rage and leave than to get too upset over it and let them have their way. If enough people show them they are wrong maybe they'll stop playing....and then the nice people can enjoy the game.

notamardybum: Feel free to hit me up for a game of standard when I'm on (if that's what you enjoy playing). It's "spootyone" just like on here. That goes for anyone, really.

I've had problems like this lots of times. I remember one time my opponent tried to use a burn spell to destroy one of my creatures so I used Redirect to change the target of that spell to one of his own creatures. He argued that I couldn't do it because that creature had hexproof and wouldn't listen when I tried to explain that the burn spell was still his and Redirect doesn't target his creature, only his spell on the stack.

Also, I recently had an argument with another player about the effect of Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord . He tried to sacrifice only an Overgrown Tomb for Jarad's return effect thinking that was all he needed to sacrifice because it's a swamp and a forest. I tried to explain that an Overgrown tomb only counts as one or the other for that effect, not both but he wouldn't listen so we had to get the judge to explain it.

I had one guy tell me that the damage from Ordeal of Purphoros wasn't dealt until the following turn. I literally have no idea how he could of thought that from reading the card.

In defense, as long as the other person can understand what I'm saying, I don't care about spelling, and grammar goes out the window in chat for me.

I had this argument with this guy about how Pithing Needle worked. I had played the Needle naming his commander, Derevi, Empyrial Tactician , preventing him from using his commander's activated ability from the command zone. He argued with me for 10 minutes that Derevi's ability was a mana ability because it required mana to activate the ability. I even took the time to get on here and ask in the Q & A. Which was promptly answered with the actual rule and the explanation of the rule.

His response was: "I'm pretty sure that isn't right, I'll have to look it up later"

The more annoying part was him thinking he knew more about the rules than me (obviously not true), and everyone in the room was backing him up and saying I was wrong.

Needless to say, I won that match without the help of the Needle

They're not all idiots, some are simply inexperienced. During a recent Draft, my opponent tried using Servant of Tymaret 's regenerate ability to tap him on my end step so he could use inspired.

I explained to him that the creature would only tap if it would die. He argued, so I told him to go get a judge. Now he knows.

I used to play online, and did see many idiots, mostly of the trollish variety that would play illegal cards for the format, or have decks that were half black lotus, half fireball and play their whole deck (drawing however many cards they wanted regardless of the rules) like "herp, derp, I just killed you!"

That is just stupid!

The inexperienced people aren't who this thread is dedicated to, it's the people who are inexperienced and think they know better.

Yes, Matsi, that's correct, but I know plenty of elitist snobs who think anyone less experienced than themselves are idiots.

There are different ways to be an idiot, so I shared a related anecdote. I'm pretty sure nothing I said was off topic nor did it challenge or try to invalidate anyone else's comment, so . . .

thank you Captain Obvious?
