Sleeve Strategy, Unsanctioned FNM

General forum

Two topics that I have a question about/would like to discuss.

  1. If a tournament is unsanctioned, what exactly is it? Could someone explain it to me? If my LGS hosts an unsanctioned tournament due to lack of people or other issue, what does that mean?

  2. I was curious if anybody thinks that sleeving your deck in certain color card sleeves could be a potential thing that would let your opponent know what deck you're playing. As we all know, any information that can be gleaned in a game of magic is very important. So do you think it would be a better strategy to sleeve your mono-white devotion deck in say, black or brown sleeves, instead of white sleeves?: Because white sleeves could let them know what you're playing before hand. Not sure if this question makes any sense lol, but I had to ask.

unsanctioned means that it is not scored or recognized by the DCI and wizards so you get no planeswalker points and stuff. I have no idea what you are talking about...sleeving brown sleeves in white sleeves?

I think he means that presenting a deck sleeved in red sleeves could be interpreted to contain a red deck. Or maybe sleeves with a picture of something like a dragon.

Your sleeve color makes literally no difference to anyone but you. Even if your running a mono white deck, only an idiot would assume that looking just at your sleeves, and an even bigger idiot who try and preboard against you.

Updated the post, maybe a bit more clear. TheDevicer is correct in, that is what I was trying to say. Do you guys try to match your sleeve color to your deck color?

@EmblemMan Gotcha. So do you earn prizes like in a normal tournament?

i dont know why, but my LGS has banned the use of clear sleeves at FNM

@CheeseBro Wow, that's really interesting. Not sure why anyone would use clear sleeves anyway, but that's kind of odd.

well clear sleeves cant be used with flip cards they are illegal in that case also u can mark the cards and stuff and yeah you can get rewards but you wouldnt get anything from wizards for example fnm promos

I play blue red in white sleeves because it looks nice with my playmat. Some people match their deck to their sleeves, but its never safe to make that assumption. Plus, just wait till their first turn and you'll find out.

Unsanctioned tournaments are tournaments not put into the Wizards Event Reporter. You don't need a DCI for one, and you won't recieve Planeswalker Points or special promos.

While I suppose you could guess what kind of deck your opponent is playing based on sleeves or deck box or even playmat, only a fool (as the others have said) would take these observations as guarantees. And whatever advantage could be had would be minor; you would only be able to capitalize on any guesswork for the first few turns until it becomes clear what your opponent is playing. And because you can only sideboard after game one, there's no real manipulative advantage other than the psychological pause you might give to some people.

Well, people might make different mulligan decisions. E.g. if I know I'm against mono red aggro and have a really slow hand, I'm more inclined to mulligan than against a control deck.

I use black dragon shields for all my decks. Mostly because I use cards from deck to deck, and its easier to pull a card and shuffle it in another deck than it is to re sleeve an entire deck.

My play mat is a Galactic Empire themed playmate that look like one of this WWII propaganda war bond posters, telling you to enlist in the empire's army. Lol.

As far as letting people know what I play... lol, when i play modern I wear a shirt that has some gnarly picture of a skull with ram horns, and burning skeletons hanging by their necks from the horns, with spiked vines and fire everywhere. The shirt says, "Jund 'em out". So, yeah. I broadcast what I am playing for modern and legacy.

My sleeves do not in any way tell others what I am playing. But I have noticed that some people play with sleeves that reflect their color choice, i.e. the merfolk player uses blue sleeves.

So it sounds like it doesn't really make a difference what sleeves you use.

The shirt that I am thinking of is available exclusively from LoadingReadyRun, a sketch comedy troupe. Or else someone printed unauthorized shirts from a fan design they were given to sell on their store. This is the image that I am thinking of.

Gidgetimer, yes, that is the one! And I did buy it from that very site. I didn't know that is what they were. I will have to look into them. The last sketch comedy troupe I enjoyed was that old show, "the kids in the hall". That might tell you my age.

All i did was google, (no, shit. straight from my queries) "badass Jund shirt" and thats the photo that pulled up.

Awesome.

I feel like it totally embodies the play style and attitude of the deck. I had to have it.

I too enjoyed kids in the hall. Yes, they are a sketch comedy troupe and they are pretty good. They don't do weekly sketches any more, but they still do "Friday Nights" for WotC on the MTG Youtube. I suggest watching that entire series to anyone that even remotely enjoys both laughing and MTG.
