Scars of Mirrodin Speculation

General forum

So I was talking to some judges and you heard it here first:

  • Poison counters are back
  • Elspeth may get reprinted (recent rule change for her final ability specifically - puts an indestructibility emblem into play in its own zone that cannot be targeted or effected by cards)
  • Poison counters also go in the same area as the emblem

Personally: - Hoping for a new Tez! - Thinking Steel Overseer will go up in price!

SocialistElite says... #2

My guess is that they will reprint Glissa Sunseeker as a planeswalker.

They WILL bring back Affinity, but most likely it will not be Affinity for Artifacts.

Myr will return.

They will bring back the Cloudpost Lotus landtype.

Hopefully, they will also print Karn, Silver Golem as a planeswalker. That would seriously make my life.

KrazyCaley says... #3

I do not want to hear the word "Affinity" ever again. I would rather they bring back banding.

July 18, 2010 8:40 a.m.

SirNips says... #4

IF Affinity came back it would most likely be the same except that they wouldnt make the mistake of printing artifact lands.

I'm expecting that it'll be a reprint of the entwine mechanic.

Sure i hope the good old cloudpost comes back. its always fun even though it took me a while to figure out why it was good.

Elspeth, will probably be reprinted other wise it makes the whole duel deck redundant. Especially seen as we all know that Tezzeret will be back for that set.

Tezzeret wont make his appearance in scars but in the next set like jace did in worldwake.

Steel Overseer and Triskelion will have to wait until spoiler season before it even hints at going above $1.

July 18, 2010 8:48 a.m.

Ignus says... #5

I'm hoping for affinity. It would give legacy affinity decks a chance to get competitive again.

July 18, 2010 12:30 p.m.

SocialistElite says... #6

I disagree about the whole affinity thing. Cards like Spire Golem were immensely fun to play with. Mark Rosewater even said that they would bring back affinity in different forms.

July 18, 2010 8:55 p.m.

honeymomo says... #7

The golems were all fun. Great for limited too! Affinity would be waaay too crazy to bring back tho. Mark Rosewater does love making crazy choices but usually the design team skirts around the topics hahaha.

Poison counters and unblockable could be interesting. We still have Whispersilk Cloak in the core set. Maybe the return of Serpent Generator or Leeches ??

July 19, 2010 1:37 a.m.

SocialistElite says... #8

I don't think they will bring back Poison. Well not in mirrodin anyway. A poisonous robot just doesn't make sense to me. :P

Although if Leeches was reprinted, I'd be a happy camper seeing as I have waaaay too many of them and they are all worth about negative five dollars.

And Affinity for Artifacts was broken, but Affinity for Mountains wasnt! Wizards could go any number of ways with Affinity. Affinity to Non-basic Lands, Affinity to Enchantments, Affinity to PLaneswalkers (that one would be funny), Etc.

Affinity for Creatures was even tested out with Khalni Hydra and that card isn't exactly breaking formats.

A new alternate 3-4 CMC Tez please.

July 20, 2010 1:16 a.m.

Jimmer says... #10

I imagine there will be a TON of artifact destruction, maybe a new corrosion counter that weakens artifacts.

Also, Blade of the Bloodchief + Triskelion + Basilisk Collar = win.

July 20, 2010 2:44 a.m.

Kreux says... #11

I'm hoping to see a Karn planeswalker, or maybe a new Tezzeret. I'll be pretty upset if there's a lack of artifact love too, I love me my artifacts.

July 20, 2010 4:05 p.m.

SirNips says... #12

Well you can be pretty sure about poison seen as it made the tip cards for M11 im pretty sure.

July 21, 2010 8:05 a.m.

Halcyon says... #13

@Kreux: It's Mirrodin, I'm hoping for an antiques store full of them!

It would be pretty cool to see a colourless Planeswalker (would that even be possible?).

It has been announced that Both tezzeret and elspeth are going to be in Scars of Mirrodin. Also the title of the book that is related to Scars is called the search for karn. So most likly karn will be a planeswalker in the second set of the block. http://www.gathermingmagic.com

July 21, 2010 1:01 p.m.

Xander574 says... #15

http://www.gatheringmagic.com/scars-of-mirrodin-spoilers-0249/ Here more direct link. Also if you look closely at the box art you can see elspeth fighting the wurm like creature.

Prediction wise.i think we are going to get a new green planeswalker. and a new red. I think Tezzeret will be black blue. i think karn will be Colorless and well elspeth will be her normal white. Im not sure but didnt liliana go through a recent change?

July 21, 2010 1:08 p.m.

Halcyon says... #16

Seeing as Wotc opened up the colours of an artifact during shards, Do you reckon we'll see coloured artifacts other than blue artifact creatures in scars, albeit still mono coloured?

July 22, 2010 4:09 a.m.

Well, we have our first officially spoiled card in Sword of Body and Mind ... I think it's kinda sexy, but not horrendously broken.

http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75842/25444409/SOM-ICD_Sword_of_Body_and_Mind

Also, check this out- Mirrodin Pure AND New Phyrexia in one box? crazy? yes, rumored to be true? yes... is it true? I guess we'll have to speculate wait and see...

AAAAnd the last note on my fun and games post here; PICTURES!!!

Jimmer says... #18

That sword is stupid good! 5 mana for a Pro-Green and Pro-Blue +2/+2 creature!? AND it defecates wolves!? AND mills 10!? That's ridiculous! Vampire Nighthawk equipped with Sword of Body and Mind = Rape. Even an Ornithopter equipped with it against a mono-green/blue deck is game!

July 23, 2010 4:04 p.m.

honeymomo says... #19

Ahh sword is amazing. I'm thinking mythic? I JUST heard about two set being in one box lol~ Picking factions reminds me of WoW TTC.

Koth looks red! Want so bad... :P

July 24, 2010 10:11 a.m.

SirNips says... #20

lol the sword will be an interesting development especially in use with the current sword....

Although im seeing it probably be a little op for the current standard environment.

And if the other bit of speculation is true i think i'd probably quit playing for a couple of months. Its not something i'd like to see happen.

new planeswalker is confirmed named KOTH and looks like the rock guy that went unnamed for a long time

August 2, 2010 11:47 a.m.

nammertime says... #22

You mean the lithomancer who sealed the Eldrazi with Ugin and Sorin?

Fun acronym time:

KOTH

King of the Hill

Karn of the Homelands (yeah I'm just making it up)

Keeper of the Houses

Khan of the Hordes

Kangaroo on the Hammock

Also, the second set has been confirmed as 'Mirrodin Besieged.'

No expansion symbol, and a few more cards than usual.

August 13, 2010 3:36 p.m.

apparently the new keyword for scars is ... infect.

Infect (This creature deals damage in the form of -1/-1 counters and to players in the form of poison counters.)

not really excited about this.... combo of wither and poison. eh...

August 19, 2010 2:16 a.m.

nammertime says... #26

While it's nothing 'new,' I kinda of like poison, but that's just me, lol.

Plus, as soon as the cards roll out and we see the flavor behind it, they get better.

Remember when people got all upset over 'level up'? The cards aren't as bad now that we'e seen them.

August 19, 2010 12:04 p.m.

You are correct people were not excited about level up, but that was an entirely new mechanic, and I was actually intrigued by it. This is however a combination of two old mechanics into one new mechanic.

August 19, 2010 12:20 p.m.

Xander574 says... #28

the funny thing. This was almost one of the made up keywords for the nega shards block we are creating on the set....

August 19, 2010 1:52 p.m.

ThaXecutioner says... #29

I like the concept card that GatheringMagic came up with for the rumored new version of Elspeth, though it feels like it's a bit on the overpowered side:

(note: this is not real, this is just a concept card - sorry if I get anyone excited over this)

August 19, 2010 4:07 p.m.

nammertime says... #30

For anyone who wants to see proof of the new keyword, click the link and roll the d10 until you get the skull'n'bones.

I agree with you that combining two old keywords into one thing doesn't make it so new, but poison and wither weren't exactly overused mechanics either. If they can figure out a way to fully utilize the mechanic and make gameplay different, it could work.

Besides, Figure of Destiny was level up before level up existed, and Jaya Ballard, Task Mage was a planeswalker before planeswalkers existed (the latter is my speculation lol).

August 19, 2010 4:19 p.m.

nammertime says... #31

@ThaXecutioner

That card doesn't seem so original either, it's like they just decided to put three powerful white mechanics (Silence , Indestructibility and Martial Coup ) into one, without having any real direction. The abilities don't exactly synergize.

August 19, 2010 4:23 p.m.

I used to like poison. Though I stopped playing for a long time and wasn't playing when wither was a mechanic. Looks interesting to see the two together.

August 19, 2010 7:02 p.m.

Boooooo. I don't like this poison nonsense! Well, not in a plane full of ARTIFACTS! How can you infect/poision an artifact!?

Oh well. Im sure wizards will make everything okay eventually.

Also, I STILL don't like level up. lol

August 19, 2010 10:02 p.m.

So... what does everyone think of the new Venser art? Will Venser, the Sojourner be a PW? I'm open to it but lets hear what ya'll think!

http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75842/25445229/SOM_New_Art!?pg=10

Just click on the drop link in the second post on the page and you can see the Talking Rock in all his glory... I never read the Time Spiral novels, so I'm curious as to what Venser is about, but does anyone wanna go for the history lesson here, speculation?

August 19, 2010 10:27 p.m.

nammertime says... #35

If he's alive, then he's old as hell. You can check his profile by googling him lol.

August 19, 2010 11:16 p.m.

Yeah... I raised an eyebrow to that too, but the art remains spoiled, and he's on the boosters too. I wonder how he'll appear within the storyline given the time difference speculation.

August 22, 2010 12:14 p.m.

Well, if he's a planeswalker, there is no telling how old he is. I mean, Urza lived for a HUGE amount of time.

Or it could be that he traveled time during the madness that is known as the Time Spiral block. Plus he was buds with Teferi, Master of All Things Time Related.

August 22, 2010 1:36 p.m.

nammertime says... #38

Urza was an oldwalker, while everyone else now is a nerfed neowalker. Oldwalkers could live practically forever and were pretty much gods incarnate, like Urza. Neowalkers are kind of just punks comparatively... and well, Venser would be a neowalker now no thanks to the Mending.

August 22, 2010 9:46 p.m.

Jimmer says... #39

Jeez...so much history in magic...I'm both curious and bewildered... What exactly is the 'Mending'?

August 22, 2010 10:46 p.m.

nammertime says... #40

It was a retcon that Wizards did to go forward with a more focused product. In story terms, though, all the crap that happened on Dominaria (Brothers' War, Weatherlight stuff, etc.) was making everything go haywire (time rifts and other junk making magic harder to cast, and planeswalking more dangerous). Long story short, to fix all of this, a bunch of planeswalkers had to perform the Mending, which sealed all the rifts and made everything go back to normal, but it changed the nature of the planeswalker spark in the process.

Gone were the days of godliness, in came the days of being just above-average wizards who could travel the planes.

I make it sound drab, but it's quite interesting, even if a bit lame sometimes. It's also quite a long story with a lot of intricate details, so when I said long story short, I'm kind of not doing any of it justice. For example, nowadays, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker has become the main antagonist, vying for power anywhere he goes... because basically, he got nerfed as a planeswalker too, and hates it. So, he goes around trying to build himself back up to god status.

As for Venser, well, he's one of the ACTUAL lamer characters in all the stories (imo anyway), but maybe they'll make him cooler now?

August 23, 2010 3:42 a.m.

Jimmer says... #41

Wow. Maybe Urza might come back as an actual planeswalker card, course he'd probably start at 5, +1 would be Black Lotus , -1 would be Time Walk , and -8 would be you win the game. lulz.

Seriously though, I will look into the timeline now, it would probably make my understanding of the storyline much more complete; considering that we're going to return to mirrodin, and I hardly know anything about the place to begin with. note: I know Karn made mirrodin, and Urza made Karn.

August 23, 2010 5:05 a.m.

nammertime says... #42

Urza's never coming back, that's for sure. But yeah, there are a million resources online that could clarify all of this better than my crap lol.

August 23, 2010 5:09 a.m.

SirNips says... #43

Yeha new key word/ mechanic being

Proliferate.

Seems to be fairly cool

August 30, 2010 9:52 p.m.

cardcoin says... #44

So apparently We could be seeing a return for Silver Myr . So there's at least 5 artifact creatures that could work well with Steel Overseer ... (if there is 1, then the other 4 will dif follow through)

I think anyone wanting a solid priced card should make this a purchase now... (bit of a no-brainer really)

Also from MTGS forums, though not officially confirmed...

Wurmcoil Engine Artifact Creature-Wurm deathtouch, lifelink when [cardname] go to graveyard from play, put a 3/3 artifact wurm token with deathtouch, and(might be 'or', the pic isn't very clear) a 3/3 artifact wurm token with lifelink into play. 6/6

If thats fake, fair enough, but if it's real... holy crap.

September 2, 2010 5:28 p.m.

birdseed says... #45

In regards to the wurm, its forsure (at least according to the MTG forums), and its an 'and'. I'm so buying a playset of those. Theres a possibility that it'll be the pre-release/release card or something along those lines.

September 2, 2010 8:51 p.m.

cardcoin says... #46

Listening to Star City Games youtube video, and it doesn't look like they could be far wrong regarding the faction images that are appearing on certain cards...

They are reckoning that Infect could be one factions main weapon, whilst the other faction is using indestructibility....

This could be an insane set or an awfully over priced set. or worse... a set where the uber-rares are over powered and over priced. which will ruin the average joe who wants to get into the tourney scene unless he has the walla to waste.

September 2, 2010 9:43 p.m.

Jimmer says... #47

since all we've seen so far is rares and mythics, i expect the the commons are gonna be fairly basic. Then again, I kind of want to see some infect creatures; and I know that those are all sorts of bad. (i.e. 4/4 infect + distortion strike = game)

September 2, 2010 10:25 p.m.

Dr. McMeen says... #48

Leeches

ARRGH A HOMELANDS CARD ARRGHARGHARGHARGH!

September 3, 2010 11:36 a.m.

mrenglish says... #49

Keywords that will be in Scars (for sure) Indestructible Infest Proliferate I expect there to be a fourth keyword, possibly scry, with Indestructible being something of a minor thing.

Planeswalkers that will be featured: Definite: Elspeth Koth Suspected: Tezzerett Venser Karn

Characters who WILL NOT return: Slobad Glissa

The Prerelease card is a 6/6 Wurm, with Deathtouch and Lifelink, that puts two 3/3 Wurms into play upon death. One has deathtouch, the other has lifelink. The Buy-A-Box promo is memoricide, a functional reprint of Cranial Extraction.
