Questions for Standard/Vintage

Hello everyone,

I am just getting back into the game after stepping out after Ravnica Block. I am thinking of doing a Trample deck for Standard would anyone be willing to help?

KrazyCaley says... #2

Trample is a rough mechanic to try and build a whole deck around, especially in Standard. What's your concept?

Start with Garruk Wildspeaker and Overwhelming Stampede and work your way out from there =)

Big cheap fatties like Leatherback Baloth and Terra Stomper should help too.

Because of the M11 rules regarding trample and deathtouch, you might do well using black and green.

Garruk Wildspeaker

Grave Titan

Death Baron

Reassembling Skeleton

card:Garruk's Companion

Overwhelming Stampede

Well I was thinking of using [Garruk's Companion], [Yavimaya Wurm], and [Duskdale Wurm] All three creatures already have trample. Then I was going to Green and red instants and enchantments to boost them. I figure with 4 each of BOP's and Mana Elves I should be pretty fast.

Okay so going the route of B/G Death/Trample. Does anyone know a good list of Death Touch creatures?

Off the top of my head, Vampire Nighthawk and Deadly Recluse .

Otherwise, you could just do an advanced search on Gatherer or magiccards.info.

Either way you need some removal. If you're G/R you could use Lightning Bolt , Flame Slash , sideboard Combust . In B/G maybe use Consuming Vapors , Doom Blade , Hideous End .

Since a lot of people in my LGS will play Commander, on days that there might not be enough people to fire a standard tournament up, I want to start bringing an EDH deck. Thing is, I want to make it budget (til I get a new job), and I want to make it land destruction. Not Sylvan Primordial "I'm a dick" style, but spot removal of strategic resources to deny capabilities for key plays. Any ideas?

Sylvan Primordial is banned anyways.....but a good place to start is American Control with Numot, the Devastator as your commander.

I also run a budget EDH deck just so I can take part. It's grown a bit as my collection has grown but in essence it's still the same. I run Green/Black with Glissa, the Traitor as the commander. Lots of removal and threats, graveyard fun, and loads of crazy artifacts. If you wanted to be more controlly you could add more Green stuff like artifact/enchantment removal, but I dunno, I always have fun playing it.

Glissa is really cool because any removal effects targeting creatures that aren't your own trigger her ability, so you can recycle artifacts and ramp up all the time.

How about checking out some of the new Commander 2014 decks? The new green commander Titania is designed so that you can run land destruction and get creatures out of it.

Bellock86 says... #16

Also I feel the need to warn you that land destruction in general is frowned upon and in EDH it's even more so hated on because typically the first 3-5 turns most decks spend getting land into play.

It could very quickly turn into 3 against you in a multi player pod.

Eh, a healthy meta is all about checks and balances. Outlaw any particular strategy and the ecosystem goes out of balance. Pretty soon you've got to run the same greedy manabase as everyone else, and dump a ton of land by turn 5 or you're too far behind to compete. I like a little LD from my opponents, it's good for the game.

I'm not sure we are on the same page with what "budget" is if you are suggesting $25 cards to the guy who said he wanted to keep the deck budget until he finds a new job.

I'm with mr. lemmingllama suggesting the new precons. they come out on 11/7 and will be able to be bought from any walmart or target for 34.99 msrp

Numot seems interesting. Is there enough in white and blue to support it, stuff like "Target land is basic land" and "every land your opponent controls is x land"?

Annex shenanigans ahoy

If you are ok with mass symetrical land destruction, then white has Armageddon , Catastrophe , and Cleansing . Being in both white and red would give you access to the dreaded Boros Charm /Jokulhaups synergy, but that is a bit of a dick move.

Gidgetimer says... #24

Also there is Reality Twist which wouldn't effect you since it would just swap your plains and mountains. But you would have to support it with a mana combo if you want it to stick around for any length of time.

My advice is to look at "best budget commander" lists until one of four things happens

1) you see a commander that practically screams "build around me!"

2) you see a commander you have the cards to build around

3) you see a commander that let's you play your favorite archetype (I have a sharuum eggs deck that happened that way)

4) your mac explodes, aliens attack, or you decide to find different advice.

Just my 4 cents!

If you are looking at America colours, it may be worth considering Zedruu the Greathearted as your general. Cards like Vedalken Plotter , Political Trickery , and Shifting Borders allow you to mess with your opponent's mana while netting you cards off of Zedruu. If you have one already, Venser, the Sojourner works well to repeatedly bounce Vedalken Plotter and can get the land you traded back the following turn if you need it. Cards like Spreading Seas can also neutralize an opponent's utility or dual land then you just donate control of the enchantment to get more cards during your upkeep.

Dust Bowl is your friend if you are drawing a bunch of cards and want a repeatable way to destroy specific lands.

And like what was mentioned above, America colours lets you run cards like Numot, the Devastator and Annex as well as Confiscate , Pillage , Avalanche Riders , Dwarven Blastminer and Incendiary Command . People have already mentioned a bunch of the mass land destruction spells so yeah, you have lots of options.

TheNinjaJesus says... #27

Okay, so Zedruu seems fun, and since the cards are all "The effect that hits you is awful" to exchange it, the cost is pretty cheap. The way I could still keep it LD is by putting Aggressive Mining in there. Maybe keep Numot as a creature in there.

Thanks for all the input guys! I actually decided to go Jund- there's a little bit more of a consistent win con following destroying their lands in large guys that beat face, and decent removal. My mana base gives me pause, and I'm not sure about some of the creature choices, but I appreciate the feedback I've been given, and if you are willing to help me out some more, the deck is right here-
