planewalkers: when one comes into play can it use its ability right away or does it come in tapped?

royal assissin: if an opponent attacked, the royal assassin can kill target tapped creature. then say that opponent regenerates their creature and it becomes the turn of the player who has royal assissin, then can he kill it twice if you regenerate then?

regenerate: does it have to be on the specific turn it dies?

Planeswalkers - A plainswalker comes into play untapped, with the counters equal to the number on the bottom right hand corner. Their abilities trigger once a turn, and only at any time where you can play a sorcery. Yes, you can play the ability as soon as the plainswalker spell has been resolved. to kill one is to remove all counters from it, or by means of directing combat damage to a plainswalker when your declaring attackers. You MUST specify who your attacking when declaring an attack. Either the opponent or the plainswalker. Oh and if you use direct damage you MUST specify where the damage is going at the time you announce the spell.

Royal Assassin - Anytime the creature is tapped, it can be destroyed (or an attempt can be made to destroy it), so it can be done when the opponent has declared attackers, also if the creature has been tapped for mana, or if you use something like Fatestitcher to tap the creature you wish to destroy.

Regenerate - The ability allows for a token to be placed on the creature so that if it is dealt leathal damage (damage that would cause the creature to die) or be destroyed (like Royal Assassin 's effect) then the token is removed from the creature preventing it from dying. The only side affect of this is that the creature becomes tapped until the next upkeep of the controllers turn.

Hope this info helps. Oh and if anyone thinks I'm wrong, feel free to correct me :)

nammertime says... #4

1: You can use it right away. The only planeswalker that taps is Gideon Jura when he becomes a creature and attacks. Note that Gideon Jura would have summoning sickness, so wouldn't be able to attack the turn you play him.

2: If you untap your Royal Assassin , you can try again. If they don't have any way to regenerate the creature, it dies. If they can regenerate, then... they can regenerate.

3: Regeneration puts up a 'shield' of sorts for the turn. In fact, according to the official ruling, you can even regenerate your creature during your upkeep (and it gets tapped), and if at any time that turn, someone targets it with a destroy effect, it gets regenerated. People will usually just use it in response to a destroy effect, just like people would use Healing Salve in response to damage to a creature.

Yes the number sign is format markup.

1 number sign will be the size you have seen above.

2 will be a size down,

3 will be a size down

etc.

Use comment preview to avoid making mistakes with markup

Actually, I saw it be all big and stuff in my preview... but I thought it was just some mistake, so I posted anyway.

okay one more question:

for card:Liliana's Specter the "each opponent" does that mean both players, because they are both opponents, or does it only say that cause if you play double headed dragon?

August 22, 2010 2:34 a.m.

Vorxis says... #15

It doesn't mean both players.

If you play a card:Liliana's Specter, each of your opponents (the players you are playing against, not your self), have to discard. The person who plays the spell, and any allies (if any), are immune. The card would have read "...each player discards a card.", If it had wanted everybody to discard.

How can a planeswalker have summoning sickness? Gideon gains the creature type, but any time he does turn into a creature you haven't controlled that creature since last turn, you've controlled the planeswalker?

August 22, 2010 8:13 a.m.

sporkife says... #17

the turn you play him, you haven't controlled him since the beginning of your turn, so if you man him up he now has summoning sickness.

Moot, though, unless you Gilder Bairn 'd him for more counters, as he would be sent to the graveyard immediately upon removing his only 6 loyalty counters.

cardcoin says... #20

You don't remove counters for Gideon Jura 's ability to turn him into a creature. So you don't need to worry about trying to get more counters onto the plainswalker, though for other ones, that might be a different story all together :) (for their final ability)

seriously though, the first turn that Gideon is on the playing field, he is treated like a creature... or at least to my understanding. Just like lands coming into play when there's something on the board to turn them into creatures. It stops the lands from being able to tap for mana (or activated abilities) for the turn it comes in.

But that's a subject for a totally different occasion :)

August 22, 2010 6:30 p.m.

nammertime says... #21

Any permanent that turns into a creature the same turn it was cast/put onto the battlefield cannot attack, except if there's something else on the battlefield that gives it haste or allows it to attack. That includes manlands and Gideon Jura .

And Gideon's last ability cost 0 the last time I checked? :D

So, I got 1st at FNM last night...instead of packs, I opted for store credit, which was more than enough to buy the new Nekusar, the Mindrazer promo Judge Foil that I'd been salivating over in the display case for the past couple months. Due to Black Friday, the card, which was normally $45, was kicked down to $34.99.

Now, I play Nekusar in EDH, but I've got three regular copies already. And it's totally bitchin' to have a rare, exclusive foil for one of my favorite commanders. However...

What is the economic future of this judge foil? Will it hold or slowly rise? What are the normal trends for judge foils over time (if there are normal patterns at all)? I've seen some vendors asking for as much as $60 for it. Is it better-served as trade fodder? Or should I enjoy the card, care for it and play it while waiting to see where its price goes?

Finally, did I get a good deal? I know it was basically free because of Store Credit, but would I have been better off (strictly value-wise) by grabbing the alternative to credit, which was 14 KTK packs?

November 29, 2014 10:20 a.m.

lemmingllama says... #23

It will never lose value, and will likely go up since EDH players love their foils. I would probably just use it since you also care about foils, and maybe trade it in the future if it's price increases.

Then again, 14 packs of KTK would have likely given you at least one fetch and some random bulk. If you play a lot of standard, then the packs may have been a better idea.

November 29, 2014 10:42 a.m.

JakeHarlow says... #24

Yeah, last week I got 1st too and opted for the 14 packs. Among a smattering of playable uncommons, I opened a Savage Knuckleblade, a See the Unwritten, a Rakshasa Deathdealer, and my fourth Sorin, Solemn Visitor. No fetches, and the rest were bulk rares. I supposed I recouped the value of the packs, especially since they were gratis, but I was disappointed that the only pulls with any eternal value were copies of Treasure Cruise. I do play a good amount of Standard, but prices have settled to the point that I'm comfy buying the singles staples I need (though busting packs has lost none of it's fun and excitement). All the same, my pulls , Sorin aside, left a bad taste in my mouth, so I opted this time for the sure-fire Judge Foil grab. I agree with your perspective though, lemmingllama. I guess the Nekusar was a thing I wanted and I hoped it would hold a stable value and hopefully climb some.

I just wonder what the price history for some of Magic's more popular Judge Foils look like.

Man what is up with my lgs. First at fnm will fetch me only 7 packs

November 29, 2014 11:10 a.m.

Hjaltrohir says... #26

I would play hold it and play it and see where the price goes, as lemmingllama said.

November 29, 2014 11:29 a.m.

It's a rare, foil version of a decently popular commander. It'll probably stay the same price, or climb over time. Plus, it's just awesome and you play Nekusar EDH. I'd keep it.

JakeHarlow says... #28

@ mpeach1: Man, that prize support blows...though when I was playing in NYC, the support was also pretty awful. How many players are in your average FNM tourney?

@ ducttapedeckbox: That makes good sense. And unlike most of the Standard cards I could have opened, the Nekusar will see play time and again. I'm pretty pleased with the choice I made, especially given my abysmal KTK pulls of late...

Thanks for the thoughts, gang, I appreciate it! :D

November 29, 2014 11:51 a.m.

mpeach1 says... #29

@JakeHarlow on average Id say about 60ish people per fnm, unless there's a big tournament near us that weekend. Sometimes they do double pack support but typically not. Generally it's 4-0=7 packs. 3-1=4 pack . 2-2=2 packs. 1-3 or 0-4=1 pack. It's been like that at all of the shops I've played here though

You guys don't cut to the top 8? In my store, which also has around 60 for FNM, the top 8 is cut and then competes elimination style for the entire pot, which is based on the number of tournament entrants. This means that sometimes, first place gets as much as a whole box if it's a busy night! Average is 14-20, though. At the prerelease, somebody won 52 packs from 1st place! Bottom 4 of the top 8 get 4 packs each, then 3rd place gets 10 usually, and 1st and 2nd get the biggest pile, with 1st taking the lion's share. The most I ever won was 22 packs. At my store in Jacksonville, if you don't top 8, you won't win packs...but once you're in the top 8, your prize support is very solid indeed. And then entry fee is only $5.

My store in NYC had a set prize amount for records, kinda like yours. Based on your record, you won some number of packs at the end. And there usually wasn't a elemination cut to top 8. And even going 4-0 only got you at most 9, and that's if you didn't lose any games either. I recall going 3-1 several times and only getting 3-4 packs! Hardly enough to cover the $10 entry fee and definitely not enough to cover the hellish commute from uptown to 5th Ave. NYC had its ups but the LGS scene up there BLOWS. I feel so spoiled where I'm at now. My current LGS owner has free raffles for sealed product or store credit in between all five regular rounds, and the $5 entry gets you two slices of pizza and a drink! It's the best deal in town by a damn sight. Jacksonville Game Center is the real deal.

abenz419 says... #31

my lgs doesnt cut to the top 8 either. Usually it's 5 rounds, less if there is an unusually small amount of people, and everyone with 12 points or more places. Then they use the software that wizards provides the store to deal with tie breakers, etc. (opponents winning percentage). If you win a round you get 3 points, a tie gets 1 point, and a round loss gets you 0 points. So basically anyone who goes 4-1 or better will get packs. We don't ever have people winning 20 plus packs, but our FNM is also very cheap at $2 where everything goes towards prize packs.

November 29, 2014 1:25 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #32

That's not a bad setup. We use the same placement system as per Wizards' software. Usually, if you go 4-1 or even 3-1-1 or 3-0-2, you have a very solid shot at placing in the top 8. I usually draw into the top 8 after round 4 if I'm assured a spot. I had to play it out though last night.

November 29, 2014 1:30 p.m.

abenz419 says... #33

Last night we had kind of a low turn out because of the weather and for some unknown reason there was an extremely large number of ties so instead of 12 points and up placing they did 10 points and up. My local store feels that FNM is a relaxed friendly environment (which is completely understandable), so by dropping it to 10 points last night they were able to pay out top 5 instead of just the top 1 or 2 people. Which kind of sucks for the guys who came in first and second, but at the same time people keep coming back because they know they don't have to play flawlessly like it's a GP to win packs at FNM.

November 29, 2014 1:38 p.m.

mpeach1 says... #34

Nope, we do not cut to top 8 for fnm and there's always only 4 rounds. 5 bucks entry. 14 packs maximum (if they're doing double packs) but typically 7 max. The only decent thing about this is that everyone playing will at least get the 1 pack, which encourages a lot of the newer players to actually play

I was completely unaware there was another printing of Neku. :O

To bad its not full art, I don't really have an interest in foils... butttttt I do have an interest in foil commanders. >:3

DarkHero says... #36

I don't think it will change much. won't go down, but I can't imagine it getting much hire either. I would defiantly just use it if I were you. Gently of course. It will never be Judge Foil Hanna, Ship's Navigator, because most of her extra value comes from the original artwork, which far exceeds the original artwork.

JakeHarlow says... #37

Keep your eyes peeled, Blizzicane, you might be able to snag on off the internet at some point. It's about $40 average right now.
