Pauper and Sanctioning

General forum

I'm putting this in general because it's about sanctioning a format, not specifically about Pauper itself.

I know Pauper is well playing on MTGO but I really want to play paper pauper as a sanctioned format. It could be very helpful for wizards:

-Very cheap and encourages people to get into the game.

-Non-rotating format is both complex and affordable.

-Easy to start but also has lots of depth.

What do you think?

Stores can already run any format they like as an FNM format.

Or are you talking about major event support? The likeliest reason it hasn't been pursued there is that it's simply more appealing to most players to run Limited, Standard, or Modern.

Pauper is like Limited in regards that's it's one of those formats for those who are strategists and those who love to be challenged.

Unfortunately most of the MTG world is divided among casuals and competitive players. Casuals either don't bother with sanctioned Magic much outside of FNM and/or are heavy Commander players. Competitive players are in it for the grind and the reward and the pure competitive atmosphere. A competitive could be fueled by a number of things, but above all he's going to be fueled by where the most competition is. So he's going to stay with the kingpins of the game, leaving little room for something like Pauper to make headway in the competitive world of MTG.

This guy and I last night were asking if the shop we play at would start having some pauper events. They seemed pretty open to the idea, which is cool. I love pauper but never get to play it. Long story short; never hurts to ask

I'd love to be able to play Modern at my local shops... Something like Pauper sees so far down the line. The lack of support in my area is insane. Heck, I live in Miami. The county I live in practically has the population of the country I was born in... If you don't hate your shop, be thankful.

Would love to see WotC or whomever hold major Pauper events.

MTGO Pauper is a fairly serious competitive environment with a strong following. And there are large paper Peasant tournaments in Europe. There's no reason it can't work here.

And way more LGS's would support it if WotC would show it some love. But I think paper Pauper is gradually gaining support from the ground up, thanks in no small part to Tolarian Community College.

I think part of the problem with the MTGO to paper translation is that the format technically uses MTGO printings, not paper printings, to determine legality. IIRC, there are some important or potentially important cards that could be sources of confusion if the official support for the format isn't careful to address them.

Epochalyptik - I agree 100%. Which is part of the reason it would be nice to see WotC give people some guidance. They might start by delineating the different legalities in the Gatherer card database, for instance.

But I also like what TCC is trying to do, using what's generally agreed to be a reasonable ban list in Pauper communities: good video about how to get paper Pauper going at your LGS
