New Channel on YouTube for MTG!

I know I'm prolly going to get hate for posting this but I didn't know where to post it. I have a new channel that breakdowns cards, decks, and even the occasional product opening. Check it out if you like. There's nothing on it yet because i just made it.

Maybe put up a / some video(s) before posting this?

Cool! You probably should have waited till you had some videos up to post this.

July 10, 2015 6:49 p.m.

Well you got a sub from me. Hope to see some content from you soon!

lol seriously bro. You're wasting our time and yours. First impressions are very important and you waste every click that someone makes here by not being prepared and having a video up for us to see what you're doing.

quesobueno123 says... #6

JRaynor That's really harsh, no need to be so negative unless the content he does upload is of low quality.

I knew I'd get hate. It doesn't really bother me. I will hopefully have a video up tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience :D

While buddy guy could use a lesson in tact, he's not entirely wrong. I saw this thread and got pretty excited to see some new MTG content on youtube, but then I just see an empty channel and immediately think less of you as a content producer because you don't know how to advertise yourself.

While i'll still be checking out what goes up here, I'm now going in with a lower expectation, and that's not good.

However, i'm still looking forward to seeing what the tappedout community can put out in terms of things that other people see, and will certainly be putting in my two cents about your video quality (not content but production) because that's just what I do.

Good luck here.

I totally understand, I apologize for not waiting. The video production should be pretty good. I use Sony Vegas and Audacity. Thank you for sticking around though!

Maybe I wasn't being tactful but Mick is quite literally wasting everyone's time. His post is basically: Hey look at this blank page.

Not trying to hate, but constructively criticize.

If you want to make MTG content dude, do it! We all look forward to what you put up. I've thought a lot about making videos myself. I've personally benefited significantly from all the videos the community has put out there. Love Queso's Burn primer! Thanks man.

TeeKayBee says... #11

Well, stay tuned. New video should be going up tomorrow if nothing goes drastically wrong. I appreciate constructive critism. It tells me what I'm doing wrong. I just wouldn't consider it a waste of time since it only takes 1-5 seconds to change the page. Once again, sorry for the inconvenience.

8bitMick Man, you claim you don't consider it a waste of time and yet you said in your original post that you knew what you were doing was a bad idea and would draw hate. So you knew you weren't going about things the right way from the beginning. You see the problem here? A more appropriate way to advertise your channel prior to asking people to visit would be something like this.

"Hey everyone, I'm a long time magic player and I plan on launching my own youtube channel with videos containing Magic content this week. I'm really passionate about it and wanted to both raise some awareness and gauge interest prior to my debut. How many people here watch youtube magic channels? What type of videos do you enjoy watching? I have my own ideas in mind but I would love to incorporate your ideas too."

I'm sorry mate, I don't know what else to tell ya.

I already said I appreciate your criticism. There's no sense in keeping on about it. Thank you for your consideration and honesty.

Btw, I meant posting it here. In this part of the forums. Because i didn't know where else to put it.

I have no idea why I came back and posted again. You're completely right. There is no sense in keeping on about it. I'll leave.

Good intro, is represented by U and not B, and if your going to breakdown a single card give an example of a deck list it's played in.

Thank you for watching. I did say Azorius. I know that doesn't count for much but I'm new to this. I'll get better. And thank you i totally forgot about "U" being blue.

One piece of advice, your voice is very monotone. You will be much more engaging to listen to if you can speak with expression. Good vid though!

TeeKayBee says... #20

Yeah, I'm working on that. I get told I'm mono tone a lot even when i try to speak normally. Lol. Thank you

I feel like you could be explaining more. Like, right now it just seems that you're reading the card. Give some practical uses, link to decklists where the card has performed, list off some of the synergies and explain how they work. We can all read the cards for ourselves, so what we'd be looking for as content consumers is why and how we should be using the card.

ThatJunkMage What did you think of the quality of the video? (Not content but production)

Dalektable says... #25

As an MTG channel producer myself, I have a few suggestions. First, try not to burn out on videos. I know at first you have so many great ideas and you want to get the content out there, but budget your ideas well. One of the best pieces of advice I can give you if you want to be successful is to make a schedule of when you upload and stick to it. Now, I don't do this myself but I'm a bad example haha. Now, I could post a loooot more but I'll just say this one last thing and this is the most important thing when making ANY content, not just MTG related...would YOU watch your own content? If your videos aren't of the quality or entertainment to which you yourself wouldn't watch them, it's likely no one else will want to to. Basically, only make content you yourself are interested in and would watch yourself. It took me far too long to realize that.

I for one am excited to see a new member enter the community, and you got yourself another subscriber here. If you'd like to check out my MTG channel and maybe collaborate in the future, my channel is MTGNerdsUnited :)

I'll just break down the Ojutai video as I watch it.

I like the length of the intro, 3-4 seconds seems ideal, though maybe adding a transition between it and your content would be the play. That jump cut from black and harsh green to mellow blue was a bit rough.

I'm definitely not a fan of the power-point style here with the arrows - it seems a bit 'high school presentation that they didn't want to do'. While highlighting the area that you're talking about is awesome, I would find a way to take a page out of MythicMTGTech's book and zoom in to whatever area of your image that you're talking about. You should be able to Ken Burns to get that effect, but I'm not entirely familiar with Vegas so that'd be something you work out on your own.

The music in the background is at a great level. Not so high as to have it be overpowering, but not low enough that it's just a weird buzzing. I might bring it up like 1-3 decibels, but right about where you have it is awesome.

Flashing in to the card that you mention (not the breakdown card, but in the Ojutai video the Anticipate) is good, but leave it up long enough so that people that don't know what it is can skim read it - 2-4 seconds. Also, that was a bit too large, just having it cover like your written text of the card you're breaking seems fine.

Not a production note, but I would put up the TCGPlayer and / or the MTGCardMarket values of the card you're breaking, as that's where the majority of people pull their pricing from.

Making fun of yourself with the stutter is totally fine to leave in every once and a while, but don't make it a regular thing unless your schtick is that you're also a comedy act.

In your outro, take advantage of fades. the outro itself was totally cool, but the jump scare wasn't great. A 2 second fade in will help a lot. And when taking a music clip (I don't know how much you know about making / utilizing music), try to not pick a part of the song that acts as a buildup. It's like "Uup, here it comes, music is getting louder and more energetic, what's going to happen next, aww it's gone." Fades on both ends of the outro are pretty key. The end fade should only be about a second long though.

I'll go through the Phoenix video to see if there's anything else i'd like to touch on.

EDIT: I would also have to agree with what Dalektable mentioned, if you wouldn't want to watch your video, don't upload it. There's been so many times where i've gone back and done even whole reshoots because I didn't like the shots that I got the first time for like an interview or whatever. I've filmed a couple of pack openings, and midway through I just took down the camera because I wouldn't want to watch that content. Always double watch your end result for your own satisfaction.

Didn't see anything in the phoenix video that I didn't already cover in the first post. I appreciate the additional movement and use of outside images, but be careful where you get those images from. Always try to use free stock images instead of like, corporate logos, because those guys play way too rough.

July 11, 2015 11:41 p.m.

TeeKayBee says... #28

ThatJunkMage I thought those were the stock images? Lol. I can't find the transitions in Sony Vegas but I will find a substitute if there isn't any. And Dalektable I know what you mean, I'm just getting a few vids out so I'll have something to present. After about 5 or so, I will probably go to every other day or something like that.If you both make videos, we should all feature each other on our channels. I'm all about the magic community. Thank you both for the advice and support! :D

Btw, if it looks like a powerpoint it's because I'm still pretty new at this. I haven't mastered the art of presentation yet. xD

ThatJunkMage I figured out how to transition so my quality should bump up. :D
