Most powerful cards ever

Now, every one knows the power 9, but can we consolidate another 10 cards? I vote Sol Ring for #10. THIS ISN'T FORMAT SPECIFIC!

GlistenerAgent says... #2

Yawgmoths Will, Demonic Tutor, Oath of Druids, Mishras Workshop, Bazaar of Baghdad...

Basically, check the Legacy banlist. Those are the best cards in Magic.

Usually the "Power 10" ends with Library of Alexandria, but there is an argument to be had with Sol Ring.

Disregarding the ante clause, Contract from Below is the single most powerful card ever printed, bar none. It is more powerful than most of the power 9- it's ante clause keeps it banned in vintage, and it's price-point low. If it weren't for the ante...

Unlike the Un-cards, this was a real card that saw real play, if you can believe it. Because of this, I do not feel that the ante aspect of the card disqualifies it from a 'most powerful' list.

Beyond that, Library of Alexandria, Sol Ring are pretty good bets. Mana Crypt is also ridiculously strong, though it was never officially released in a set, if I recall correctly.

Edit: Almost forgot about Tolarian Academy. Can't forget the Academy, that shit's ban-slammed and restricted for a god-damn reason.

What about the only card ever emergency banned Memory Jar?

buildingadeck says... #7

Lol, what about Black Lotus? Honestly, there's a reason it's worth so much money. Having access to 3 mana of any color on your first turn plus a potential land means you can Jace, the Mindsculptor on T1 or do all kinds of other crazy things.

snotice says... #8

buildingadeck: he stated, besides the Power 9 in which Black Lotus is first.

Nonetheless, I do agree with Tolarian Academy and Sol Ring. Those two cards are simply ridiculous!

He said the Power Nine (Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall (the most powerful of the bunch), Timetwister, Time Walk, Mox Pearl, Mox Sapphire, Mox Jet, Mox Ruby and Mox Emerald). What he's talking about is the next few cards, which I think are Necropotence, Library of Alexandria, Contract from Below, Memory Jar, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt and Yawgmoth's Will. Not in any order.

Oh, okay. My b. Yeah, I'd have to say that similarly mana driven cards are more powerful then: Sol Ring, Dark Ritual, Mana Crypt, etc. These cards allow for crazy plays in the early game.

Sol Ring is a serious contender, as well as Bazaar of Baghdad, Library of Alexandria, Metalworker, and tons more.

Shahrazad, clearly. Cast it turn two and you just auto win the game because your opponent runs away while flipping you off.

I'm surprised that there has been no mention of the most powerful equip ever, Skullclamp. That card is disgusting when it's built around, and it's not even that hard to build around.

July 19, 2015 5:37 p.m.

JWiley129 says... #14

I'm pretty sure Batterskull is the best Equipment ever made. Skullclamp still requires creatures to be good. But neither gets close to "Best Magic Card" discussion.

July 19, 2015 5:48 p.m.

TehCoopeh says... #15

Well if we count things as situational, JWiley129, then Library sucks if you mulligan, Lotus sucks if you're playing manaless, Bazaar sucks if you aren't playing dredge, Moxen suck if they aren't adding the right color. No card is individually winning a game.

I would say Skullclamp is leagues ahead of Batterskull. Clamp is banned in modern and legacy and block constructed, and its standard days, and most people don't wonder why it wasn't banned as fast as Memory Jar was. Batterskull will never have this treatment, even though it's still a rather good Equipment.

The moxen don't suck if they don't add the right color, TehCoopeh, they still are 1 extra mana. But you do bring up a good point.

July 20, 2015 8:22 a.m.

Force of Will, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Tarmogoyf, Dark Confidant, Damnation, any eldrazi titan really could take a spot, Sol Ring, Demonic Tutor, Sylvan Library, and Berserk, not in any particular order. These are pretty obvious, but I think Sylvan Library is one of the best. also, Necropotence ties with library

July 20, 2015 8:25 a.m. Edited.

Damnation isn't close to this list.

Also, note that Force of Will isn't particularly good. It's just a necessary evil.

July 20, 2015 8:49 a.m.

Damnation is a 4 mana BLACK BOARD WIPE. If it was white it would be different, but in black it is extraordinarily powerful.

July 20, 2015 8:55 a.m.

Black is notorious for reanimator and the last color to board wipe against. Damnation allows cards like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed or Goryo's Vengeance to be stupid fun. Plus the lack of regen means it hits others harder. There is a reason the other black board wipes either suck or... Well suck

July 20, 2015 9:02 a.m.

A sweeper does not come anywhere near the list of most powerful cards in the game.

PepsiAddicted says... #23

For me it is mishras workshop <3

And id say jit is scarier than batterskull

July 20, 2015 9:11 a.m. Edited.

GlistenerAgentf Again, a mono black, four drop sweeper. The reason it is powerful is because it is black, and because it's WOG. Damnation easily gives a black deck the upper hand, where as in a white deck more often than not it simply resets everything, putting everyone on equal footing.

July 20, 2015 9:46 a.m.

Boza says... #25

ninjaman16782, sweepers are off the list of (second) top 10 strongest cards for sure. Damnation is not even the strongest black sweeper out there. Toxic Deluge takes the cake there and even it will never make the cut over something like Yawgmoth's Will and Necropotence, two cards at the same CMC that are easily a lot more broken.

July 20, 2015 9:50 a.m.

I disagree on toxic deluge, but I know why it is powerful. I agree that necro and will are better, necro being my favorite and possibly the best black card ever printed, although that is a different conversation. I hold by the power of damnation, however. Deluge and damnation are better in different situations, deluge being weaker in everything but EDH and heavy lifegain decks, which are more than likely not mono black. Damnation does not get around indestructible, but it does not hurt your life total and is safer to play in 60 card formats, though I do not know why that is relevant for me, as I pretty much only play EDH XD.

July 20, 2015 9:56 a.m.

Coinman1863 says... #27

Toxic Deluge is practically a legacy staple by the way. It always kills exactly what you need it to and not your stuff because you can control what it kills. You can't do that with Damnation.

July 20, 2015 10:09 a.m.

I know that Damnation is a good card. I'm just not sure why you think it's worth considering in this particular discussion.

July 20, 2015 10:32 a.m.

JA14732 says... #29

ninjaman16782, most of the cards we're mentioning are cards that DESTROY formats, are banned in legacy, restricted in vintage and should probably never be played by any casual player. Compare Damnation to Yawgmoth's Will. Resolving a Will often just wins the game, while a Damnation gets you out of a bind. Library of Alexandria steadily builds card advantage throughout the game, Contract from Below, literally the most powerful card ever printed, is only not part of the Power Nine because of its ante clause and Memory Jar is the only card ever banned BEFORE its release. Sadly, Damnation really doesn't stand up to most of the cards mentioned here.

July 20, 2015 10:43 a.m.

JA14732 that makes sense, and I think I can agree with that

Time Vault probably has the most powerful activated ability in the game, and with so many ways to untap artifacts, its even more bananas.
