Money, Magic and the Deck Builder

I was reading the Forums on Mythic rares and= bogus success rate and it sparked a topic I talk about all the time with my Magic friends. While I don't agree having Mythic cards = a good success rate I do agree it has become "who can get what cards fast enough to get the edge on everyone else". But its not for having the cards for success its for copying the other decks and then buying those.

But I have been able to get many cards through Ebay and various other sites. The best value I have found is getting 4x common and uncommon cards for $25 to $30. Then just go after the cards I need for whatever deck I am trying to build. Using mainly the bulk of the set to build my decks. There are ALOT of TOP decks that use the "regular" cards. You just have to use your brain.

Thats the problem with players today, everyone uses the "HIVE MIND" or "Net Decking" and just copies the top players. No don't get me wrong, I have used other people's decks to get ideas and build off of theirs. It's a good resource. But Patrick "The Innovator" Chapin said, "this is a time for the deck builder" don't be scared to lose in order to learn and "innovate" the next best thing. So get out there and build!

Let's keep the spirit of the "Deck Builder" going! Let me know some of your thoughts on this subject.

If you look at the stats for the States Championships for each state you will see that for the most part every state has around 50% of the field playing the same thing. Of-coarse there are a few odd balls that are "innovating" their own decks (good job). This I feel is sad for the game of Magic. But I kinda feel that if some of us get out there and build there will be a new fresh feel out there for the Magic community. I mean we all build our own decks but when it comes to the competitive arena, a lot of us tend to go with whats safe for tournament play. And go with the top players decks.

Right now is the time for deck building because the metagame has settled into a rock paper sicissors style game where aggro beats ramp and ramp beats control and control beats aggro. Right now is the time to brew up something that can break the format (for example Dragonstorm for 2007 worlds from Chapin himself). That being said Mythic Rares aren't the problem with magic because of mythic rares how many cards are cheaper now than they would have been. The fact that Koth, Elpseth, and Venser started at 50 dollars a pop made the dual lands (which are amazing and have applications EVERYWHERE) 2-5 dollar cards when they would have been 10-16 cards. The problem is that we as magic player don't desire to be the perfect player instead we desire to 3-0, 4-0, and 5-0 our FNM and get that Promo card and some packs. We want a good deck and we want it now and don't want to go through the process to get there.

Exactly, I mean whats the fun in copying someone else? Its not really YOUR win, its theirs. Come with your own stuff ans savor the feeling of YOUR own victory!

i think it's exciting every time a new set comes out. I only play tournaments at set release (draft) or within a couple of weeks of set release, when things have been shaken up enough to cathc folks off of their guard. Other than that, I play legacy with friends beacuse of the hilarious things decks that span almost twenty years worth of cards can do. It's always good for a laugh when you attack someone with 8 16/16 trample ooze tokens :D

I haven't really gotten into tournament play for exactly the reason you state. There are simply some mechanics that end up being more powerful than others, and it's too bad. I commend WOTC for trying to balance with each expansion that comes out, but i think they ought to do a better job of beta testing too so they know when a cycle of Standard is obviously jilted, as it's happened too many times. I am, however, Optimistic for the future.

Build on, Deckbuilders!!

LOL, you said, "Optimistic for the future"! I like that. Not too many people feel that way.

I think WOTC is doing a better job of testing standard formats. I mean look at the last couple of Standard Formats. Even with one of the most powerful magic cards ever (Jace the Mind Sculptor) available in the format, it has led to a balanced format where there are a lot of good decks, but no Dominant one deck beats all. Before the rotation there was Jund, U/W Control, Naya, RDW, Dredge-Uh-Vine were all decks putting up good numbers and winning events. Now u/b control, RDW, Valakut Ramp, Eldrazi Green, Elves are all strong decks for consideration in the format that have won and top 8 ed lots of events.

Magic was meant to be a fun card game. That's how Deck Building and Deckbuilders got success and rep. I don't know when we went off but because of Standard and Extended and the Top 8, we want to win and follow the top dogs. I'll be honest I only play standard. As silly as it is, that's what I enjoy. If you are a Deckbuilder(anyone) then think of 2,3 maybe even 4 cards that you love and make them into a deck that you love. If that resonated with anyone I'm glad. As a Deckbuilder, no as Deckbuilders, it is our responsibility not only to play the game to win, we also have to have fun, and make decks that stick out from the norm. Heck, my decks never get me to the Top 8 at FNM, but I have fun.
