Greetings,

My name is Garret Ford, and I am a Masters student at the University of Lethbridge in Canada. I am helping with a research project about Magic the Gathering players. Participants will complete a brief 5-minute survey about their experiences playing Magic. The survey will run until January 31, 2016 or until we obtain 200 participants.

I expect the online sample to fill up quickly so please do not hesitate if you are interested.

For taking the time to complete the survey you will receive an e-gift card from Amazon, valued at $5 Canadian (CAD).

If you are of 18 years of age or older and are an active Magic the Gathering player you may participate. Please click the link below to access the survey.

Thanks! :)

DONE!

some of those questions had very specific answers. maybe a 1-10 scale may have been more appropriate for a few questions? not sure how accurate you're looking to get.

Completed the survey, but I found that it had a lot of issues.

"How many tournaments do you go to in a month?"

Which month? I tried to put 'Between 3 and 9", but it wasn't an acceptable answer. Makes me feel like you don't actually know what you're trying to ask here.

Also, I feel like these questions are entirely too hastily thrown together. Like, I feel like the thought process was 'Take my notes for signs of addiction, slap the "Has...While playing CCGs including Magic the Gathering" monicker on them, and we're good to go.'

I really hope that you're doing this for fun and not for a legitimate bit of Master's level research.

DevoidMage I have to agree with you. I would say most MTG players I know would mark no on almost all of these, in fact in my opinion MTG is a positive for most people I know.

I didn't consent to take the survey, but I did take a quick look at the person and university behind the survey.

It looks to me like the reason behind all this is looking into addiction disorders which the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition) has requested further study on. A previous project by the same person is "Social/Emotional Aspects of World of Warcraft (WoW) Players With and Without Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD)".

I think the questions are legitimate. Sure, they could have been worded better, but they are still meaningful.

Assume you answer honestly, of course. That's what the "Would someone you know say..." questions are for, I suppose.

I know a lot of MTG players (myself included) who joke about how addictive MTG is, hence the moniker Cardboard Crack. What a lot of people don't realize is that the people at Wizards who work on MTG use every trick in the book to make it so addictive. There are a lot of really simple, really powerful, ways to make someone spend all their money on your product, and Wizards employs them all.

They're not the only ones that do this, the freemium market makes it money by using these tricks. The point was that a lot of people will be answering "yes" to these questions.

Thank you for the overwhelming support, we have reached our goal number of respondents. I really appreciate the community coming together and assisting with this. :)

We will be sending the Amazon e-Gift Cards, valued at $5 Canadian (CAD), after the data has been processed in the new year. Thank you so much for your participation!
