Magic Based Novel

Hey guys,

So last night a buddy of mine and I were BSing about writing a Magic based movie, one that follows the real world aspect of the game instead of the lore as the present movie is supposed to be doing. However, the idea that I had basically had too much to cover in one movie, so I moved the idea to become more of a novel.

The basic story line that I have down at the moment is that we're following a 14 year old kid. His friends introduce him to Magic at school, as many Magic stories start. He is skeptical to start playing because 'it's just cardboard being moved around', but once he plays his first game, he is flung into an Avatar-esque setting, with the cards he is playing becoming visible, tangible things around him; Playing a forest and a tree sprouting next to him, etc. As he plays more and more, he's introduced to FNM, starts to get competitive, and at the same time starts to lose these awesome visions as his depth starts to fade and it all just becomes mechanical. He becomes a PTQ grinder, and eventually makes it to the protour at age 18, where a chat with a pro-player gives him a drive to keep playing similar to when he started. There's more, but I don't necessarily want to let out everything that might happen.

Now, the reason that i'm posting is because I am looking for some opinions. First off, does this book sound like something that you would want to read, given that it is written well? Would there be any sort of interest in a real-life Magic story? I know that everyone's experience is subjective, but I feel like this has the potential to be something that current players can connect with, that brings new people into the game, and maybe even help explain or eliminate some of the negative stereotypes associated with competitive gaming.

I do not have this story entirely fleshed out yet. I actually just came up with the idea last night. But I have so much free time that I may as well put it to work.

So question time; What do you guys feel should be included in a story like this? What are some aspects of the game that you feel need to shed light on? What colors should this kid play (My thought was Mono green to start, then add red once he starts getting competitive, then black once he gets to the point where he no longer has any depth in the game [So he's playing Jund], and back to mono green at the end)? Should I use real, or maybe community made cards as references? Any other thoughts on the subject whatsoever?

I'm going to start laying the groundwork on this idea tomorrow, with actual chapter writing happening probably in a few weeks, so this is going to be a very long project. Would you guys want updates by chapter? And lastly, does anyone know of a good source to write and post a novel-length book online?

Thanks guys.

use google docs. you can write it, share it with certain people, or publicly, and allow certain, approved friends to comment, or edit your material. its a very cool thing.

The above comment is very true.

Also, this sounds like a kickass story.

Talk to WotC about it and get a publisher on the line. Boys (and girls), I think we've got our next bestseller.

But no rly, sounds cool.

I would read it. Keep us updated, I'd like to see this happen.

Only problem I would see is if Hasbro slaps you with a C&D order because you're not doing this with the express written permission of HB/WOTC. They're notorious for doing that with fan works based on their properties that they don't like.
