Why are you not using mtgo?

I assume because of money

July 19, 2013 1:46 p.m.

miracleHat says... #5

good question, mtgo costs money, which i have a very limited supply of. cockatrice is free and i can make whatever i want without a thought (with m14 i will have an unlimited supply of cards to work with), also

With that said it makes since but your taking away from the game you love by using a program that has no affiliation with Wizards!

Krayhaft says... #7

The problem is that you're using a mac.

dammit

Krayhaft says... #9

I was kidding. I don't know if cockatrice is mac-compatible.

July 19, 2013 1:56 p.m.

miracleHat says... #10

oh, well there may be hope for me. it most likely is because it is a mac since occasionally when i try to open cockatrice, it says it can't open it (yadee yadee...).

bman5604, your logic is so flawed, it registers a 9 on the cuil scale.

bman5604 says... #12

How so mstancea. Is it a site developed and ran by wizards? Does it put back into the game you play like paper magic? And let me guess you use the product and feel fine stealing from magic don't you?

July 19, 2013 2:14 p.m.

MagicalHacker says... #13

Let me get this straight, paying money for virtual cards will make me enjoy magic more? Pardon my french, but that is utter bullshit.

I don't use Cockatrice but I use Forge, which is a very similar program, and it is the reason I have developed so quickly as a magic player and as a deck builder. It is not stealing, and moreover, at times it is more fun than playing paper magic with my friends.

If you took the point of "it hurts wizards and that's why you shouldn't do it" then I would agree with you, but I have to disagree with you and with anyone who argues that it is less fun than MTGO or paper magic.

July 19, 2013 2:20 p.m.

bman5604 says... #14

Never said anything about enjoying it more or less. said it takes from wizards which takes from the game you love by not using mtgo. and it is stealing its not associated with wizards and is using there name and product without written consent.

July 19, 2013 2:25 p.m.

miracleHat says... #15

look i know that this question is supremely irrelevant, but why do they call it paper magic instead of cardboard magic?

July 19, 2013 2:26 p.m.

bman5604 says... #16

its printed on several layers of paper. If you take a cheap card like a basic land and rip it half you can see the layers.

@bman5604: Playing on Cockatrice doesn't hurt anybody. I'd say the vast majority of players who use Cockatrice wouldn't pay for MTGO even if Cockatrice were permanently shut down, which can't really happen. Numerous message boards and polls from after the first server shut-down suggest I'm correct.

That being said, Cockatrice generates no money for anybody and the average user plays Magic IRL, feeding the greed machine that is Hasbro.

In fact, if it weren't for Cockatrice, some players might not have ever started. If you were just getting into a card game but didn't have the money to start playing anything but crap-kitchen-table-crap-pauper, how would you feed your addiction? By playing Cockatrice or giving up?

So, explain to us all, again, how Cockatrice hurts Magic.

July 19, 2013 2:36 p.m.

dcarpntr says... #18

Actually, myself and a lot of people I know use Cockatrice to playtest a deck for PTQ's before we invest in the paper cards. With that intention, Cockatrice is increasing sales of cards that I may not have purchased otherwise. I'm not against using MTGO, but there is something to be said about playtesting before purchasing cards. Do you feel that using proxies is stealing? Because proxies are what many people use to playtest decks in person before buying cards as well.

Also, saying Cockatrice is stealing from Wizards is also saying that the playtester on this site is stealing from Wizards. Please don't try to argue that you can't play games with the playtester because you can. You just need to open the decks in different tabs/windows and there you have it, the equivalent of Cockatrice set to play a local game where you play by yourself.

July 19, 2013 2:36 p.m.

zandl says... #19

And about the stealing thing - If nobody's making money off stolen goods, wouldn't you just see it as an honor that so many people appreciate what you make?

You can call it stealing all you want, but then your argument simply boils down to "stealing is bad and you're bad for it," without anywhere to go beyond that.

There is the sense that it is stealing, the money not earned from players who would play MTGO if there was no alternative is still stealing from their products. yes this logic is valid logic, It is simply two competing companies offering the same product. The big difference is one of the companies doesn't own any of the patents or intellectual rights to market the product. how would you feel if something you sold/invented/bank rolled was given away for free?

If you still think cockatrice (as the example, not to point fingers, since there are other products) is OK, then you should never get into business unless you are willing to give away your profits in a similar manner.

As for many saying they wouldn't do mtgo, many more would if given no alternative. What is voiced is never the full picture.

With that said, I only play paper, use cockatrice locally to build and goldfish and playtest against my ownself, have an mtgo account I don't invest in.

bman5604 says... #31

I understand everyone's reasoning. But it's stealing from Hasbro anyway we slice it. Even if you don't think it is Hasbro doesn't feel that way considering they are suing cockatrice for miss use of there name and likeness.

Now with that said I have not now or in any way said that you are a bad person for using the product. I'm just saying its stealing bottom line. Who the hell am I or anyone one for that matter to judge anyone else! But taking from Hasbro that makes the game we love is in fact theft even its simplest form. There for I refuse to use it.

July 19, 2013 4:32 p.m.

RussischerZar says... #32

I'm one of the people that actually buys Magic products because I used Cockatrice. If I didn't use Cockatrice, I would never have. So there you have it, I say Cockatrice actually increases revenue for Magic.

"But taking from Hasbro that makes the game we love is in fact theft even its simplest form. There for I refuse to use it."

Therefore, I refuse to carry on a conversation with someone who doesn't know the word "therefore" nor someone who misses the comma after it.

I don't need to justify what you view as theft if that's not how I see it. Why should I have to justify your thoughts?

July 20, 2013 1:58 p.m.

bman5604 says... #37

Your not justifying anything for me zandl I have said you make your own choices and am just giving my opioun on the matter just like you have chimed in with yours. And don't act high and fucking mighty over grammar your probably just some kid who touches his self to much.

And how is this site stealing RussischerZar? It doesn't allow you to download any content and gives all credits where credit is due! So where is your logic?

July 20, 2013 8:20 p.m.

Krayhaft says... #38

@bman5604, RussischerZar has a point, tappedout and cockatrice fulfill the same purpose for many users.

People use Cockatrice to build decks and playtest them, before buying the real cards, to make sure they're worth it.

I do the same, but with tappedout's playtest function.

I have dozens of decks on my profile page. Less than 10% of the cards in it I own. Sometimes I even open two tabs in my browser and playtest my decks against each other I'm sure you've done the same with your decks. So by your definition, using tappedout is also also stealing!

Both cockatrice and tappedout both give credit to wizards. Neither of them claim that mtg is their own. What they do claim is that they're supplementary tools for players, to better improve their game. It's really not stealing.

Also, keep in mind that strong language is discouraged. And when you have to resort to insulting people as an argument, it's a sure sign you've already lost.

Game processes are not patentable. They are not trademarkable, they are not copyrightable. I (or anyone else, like the people who made Cockatrice and MWS) can create a program that plays the rules of Magic to the letter and that's completely, perfectly legal.

The only place where Cockatrice got into trouble was in providing the parts that were copyrightable, namely images and other creative works. MWS has been around for longer and has never had a problem. Magic League promotes using free programs for playing in their tournaments and actually works with Wizards. No one, Hasbro included, has any problem with MWS and Cockatrice being used (nor could they) as long as the images are left out.

Honestly, it still appears that since it went to Woogerworks, Cockatrice is still pulling down images in-game, but I'm not privy to the reason why Hasbro hasn't/can't shut them down. Perhaps it's being done differently now. I don't know.

Not that it isn't hard to get the images elsewhere, which is what MWS requires you to do, or to simply play with colored rectangles instead of card images. You can even set Cockatrice to do the latter. Once you get past that, either program is perfectly legal. Have fun.

bman5604 says... #40

@ Krayhaft Never said it wasn't a good tool to use just have said over and over again I feel its illegal. I stand by my views of it being illegal and chose not to use the product. Those who simply choose to use the product have every right to do so. I am like others giving my opinion.

@ Barandis They have been sued and are waiting legal ramifications from lawsuit. It is very easy to move your server and change your location of ip address if you know how. This is why they are up and running again.

July 20, 2013 10:36 p.m.

Barandis says... #41

@bman5604: Not that I doubt your information just on the face of it, but a relatively extensive Google search does not show me any indication that Woogerworks has heard anything from Hasbro. Do you have a link to something I could read?

Anyway, if you're terribly concerned about running afoul of the law/Hasbro/morality, then go to Settings and uncheck "Download card images on the fly". Play with colored rectangles representing Magic cards, still with the full Oracle text available in the sidebar. No copyrightable material will then be present on your computer.

July 20, 2013 10:43 p.m.

Krayhaft says... #42

@bman5604, except you're wrong for thinking it's illegal. As Barandis has said, the game mechanics and style of play aren't legally claimable by any company. Anyone can (and has) legally make a game that's exactly like magic in terms of gameplay.

What is copyrightable are the names and artwork. The art for your favorite Jace, the Mind Sculptor , and the name Jace Beleren are what's copyrighted. And when you go by that, tappedout is an illegal utility as well, for using those artworks and names in its deckbuilding and playtesting functions.

You also didn't understand my point in post 17. I did not mean that either tappedout or cockatrice were good mtg supplements, I meant that they fulfilled a similar function. The point I was trying to make, that you didn't see, is that you accuse cockatrice users of thievery, yet by using tappedout you're being a thief yourself!

July 20, 2013 10:58 p.m.

bman5604 says... #43

No! Using tappedout isn't thievery. I have not ever downloaded anything from tappedout nor has it been offered to me to download anything magic related. The fact that you are able to download the likeness of the cards makes it theft. That's what I'm getting at. For example napster was able to download musical content or free. Is it stealing if you download songs for free and listen to them at your own free will? That in no way takes from the artist and producers that made it right? Tappedout falls under the same page as YouTube nothing is downloadable there but you can watch episodes of shows and movies for free. It's the downloading that makes it illegal and use of it after that.
