Kaladesh Fantasy draft

General forum

So, I wanted to create a sort of fantasy draft similar to what you'd see in sports.

The idea is that (ideally) 8 T/O users (although it could probably be anywhere from 6-10) would plan out a time (after KLD is completely spoiled) where we draft a "team" of 10 cards from the new set that we expect to do well at pro tour KLD.

scoring would be based on appearances of your cards in decks that win 6+ games, more points will be given for better finishes (2x points for 7 wins, 3x for 8...)

Your "team" will consist of the following cards:

Small creature (0-3 cmc)--3 pts per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Medium creature (4-5 cmc)--3 pts per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Big creature (6+ cmc)--3 pts per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Instant--2 pts per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Sorcery--2 pts per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Enchantment--2 pts per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Artifact--2 pts per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Flex slot Common--1 pt per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Flex slot Uncommon--1 pt per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

Flex slot Rare/Mythic--1 pt per 6+ finish (with multipliers)

It sounds like a lot of fun to me, hopefully enough people agree so we can make it happen!

Sounds like fun. Count me in!

Also, maybe come up with a points system for choosing cards? Like each player has X points to spend, and more obvious cards cost more to choose. That way, you could win by getting one awesome card and a couple crappy ones, or by trying to spread your points among cheaper cards.

September 3, 2016 4:08 p.m.

Oh, also - do different numbers of cards count for different points? Like, if someone gets 6 wins with one of my cards in the deck, does it matter if it's a one-of, or a playset? Or if it's sideboard/mainboard?

September 3, 2016 4:10 p.m.

hannibal6 says... #4

Oh yeah, each copy of a card in a deck counts for points.

I didn't consider sideboard actually though. maybe sideboard copies count as .5? I think that sounds fair.

Also its sort of tough to assign a point system to cards especially since its before anyone has actually played with them. If we already new which cards were the best, then the draft wouldn't be as much fun.

I'm in!

September 3, 2016 4:37 p.m.

No, I think you're right. Having restrictions on what card types can be picked should be a good enough team-balancer.

September 4, 2016 8:52 p.m.

hannibal6 says... #7

Does someone have some way of publicizing this more? it would be cool if we could get at least 3 more people involved.

September 4, 2016 10:54 p.m.

Bovine073 says... #8

Love this idea. I'd be very interested. Publicize it some more..... tag some people? idk

I like this idea... but I don't understand the point system, do the points stack? For example, if I were to choose Cataclysmic Gearhulk would it count as an artifact (2 points), a medium creature (3 points) and a mythic (1 point) = a total of 6 points per copy?

If that's the case, wouldn't it be better to just go with 1 card = 1 point, otherwise artifact-creatures are much more worthwile to choose since they offer more points.

I'd be interested to participate, but would obviously need to understand the scoring idea a bit better before making the final decision to participate :)

September 7, 2016 7:04 a.m.

hannibal6 says... #11

so the way cards filling slots work is we would all draft 10 cards, and then we would designate which card fills which slot. artifact is really meant to be non-creature artifact (I should probably change that), but there are some flex slots in terms of the official flex slots for each rarity.

September 8, 2016 1:36 a.m.

Chandrian says... #12

Oh cool, well keep me posted when it starts, I'm in for this challenge (and will let you do the counting of points, etc)

September 8, 2016 12:29 p.m.

hannibal6 says... #13

Spoilers are getting close to done, so we should pick a time that works for people to draft teams.

September 10, 2016 8 p.m.

Chandrian says... #14

So... how will it go?

  • We each pick 10 cards we think do well, and post them. In that case, you can just state that everyone has to submit their team before date X

OR

  • Each card in the set can only be picked once (meaning, if I choose a card no other player can pick that card)-> this will be trickier to achieve because of time zones and we'll need to be online at the same time (eg I live in Europe so there's +- a 7h difference)
September 11, 2016 12:26 p.m.

hannibal6 says... #15

Ahh, I had planned on the second, but with time zones, you make a good point.

We can try to make it more diverse by saying you have to have at least one card from every color? Or maybe that limits diversity?

Tell me if you have any other ideas, or else we'll probably just have everyone submit a list of ten cards by prerelease?

September 12, 2016 3:24 a.m.

Submitting a list of ten would be waaaay easier... plus, no advantages for picking first.

September 12, 2016 4:03 a.m.

Chandrian says... #17

Submitting the list of 10 would be easiest.

Maybe you can tweak the point system so that a common gives more points than a Mythic? (this will be a good incentive to not pick all the mythic bomb creautures for example since you could make more points by picking a comon)

September 12, 2016 6:47 a.m.

hannibal6 says... #18

I came up with a new idea. As soon as the set is spoiled, everyone picks one card that they think is "obvious" and then we all make lists of 10, but nobody is allowed to use the ones we picked. This will make sure people aren't all picking the same things, and also give everyone a chance to look a little deeper into the cards.

September 12, 2016 5:21 p.m.

Chandrian says... #19

Great idea, I'm definitely in!

September 12, 2016 5:31 p.m.

Sounds good.

September 12, 2016 11:51 p.m.

hannibal6 says... #21

Alright. full spoiler is out. Everyone who is participating should pick their card to exclude sometime in the next 48 hours. then once everybody picks, we can post our 10 card lists.

September 17, 2016 3:50 a.m.

Bovine073 says... #22

hannibal6 what about sideboard cards? Can our picks be sideboardish cards and still count for points if they aren't in the maindeck when they win a game?

September 17, 2016 4:56 a.m.

Yeah, sideboard cards count for .5 value (I asked earlier).

How should we submit our picks? Just post here?

September 17, 2016 5:02 a.m.

Bovine073 says... #24

I choose to exclude Chandra, Torch of Defiance.

Wait, so SB cards are just half value or only give .5 points?

September 17, 2016 5:10 a.m.

Chandrian says... #25

Sideboard cards count for 0.5 points (and then the multipliers ofc).

I'll choose to exclude Rashmi, Eternities Crafter

September 17, 2016 6:01 a.m.

I choose to exclude Cataclysmic Gearhulk.

September 17, 2016 7:01 a.m.

Chandrian says... #27

Once hannibal6 and MenacingBunny have posted their picks we can submit our lists of 10 cards.

I suggest we place those 10 cards in a spoiler block and not copy the guys who post their list first:

so turns out I was just spelling one of them wrong, and it's been here the whole time... I just looked at everyone else's lists though and it looks awesome. I think apart from the instant/sorcery/enchantment section, we ended up with a lot of diversity. I'm excited to see what happens at the pro tour

If anyone's interested, here are the top eight from the SCG Open in Indianapolis. Just as a possible precursor to the Pro Tour.

I did a link right there, but it's not showing up in the preview, so here's the non-linked version: http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/deckshow.php?&t%5BC1%5D=1&start_date=2016-10-01&end_date=2016-10-01&event_ID=19&city=Indianapolis&state=IN&t_num=1&limit=8&start_num=64&start_num=0&limit=8

At a glance, having done no actual counting or math, it looks like Bovine073 and/or hannibal6 are in a solid lead.

Alright, I went ahead and calculated results. If this had been the Pro Tour, treating the top 8 as all equally-ranked decks (that is, they all got 6 wins, no additional multipliers for extra wins), here are the results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1A7c5WuG0gwW_vzVI33vJkIa64yGyyfG8-tsgbKwdAVE/edit?usp=sharing

For the link-averse:

In last place, Me, with a humiliating 5 points. Ouch.
Next, Chandrian with a disgraceful 18 points.
Next, MenacingBunny with a respectable 64 points.
In a close second, hannibal6 with an outstanding 149 points.
And, holding onto first place by a narrow margin, Bovine073 with an incredible 150.5 points.

October 3, 2016 4:09 a.m.

Other stats:

Top three best overall cards:
Toolcraft Exemplar, played as a 4-of in 4 of the top 8 decks.
Inspiring Vantage, played as a 4-of in 5 of the top 8 decks.
Smuggler's Copter, played as a 4-of in an unbelievable 8 of the top 8 decks.

Best by category:
Small Creature: Toolcraft Exemplar
Medium Creature: Skysovereign, Consul Flagship
Large Creature:Noxious Gearhulk
Instant:Harnessed Lightning
Sorcery: NONE!
Enchantment: NONE!
Artifact: Smuggler's Copter
Flex Common: Fragmentize
Flex Uncommon: Harnessed Lightning
Flex Rare/Mythic: Smuggler's Copter

Player in order of number of cards picked that earned at least one point:
MenacingBunny and Myself, tied with 2.
Chandrian with 3.
hannibal6 with 5.
Bovine073 with 6.

Least Valuable Pick (greatest difference between pick, and best possible pick in that category):
MenacingBunny and Me in the Artifact Category, selecting Animation Module and Aetherworks Marvel respectively, earning 0 of a potential 64 points for Smuggler's Copter.

small creature - inventor's apprentice

medium creature - verdurous gearhulk

large creature - torrential gear hulk

instant - harnessed lightning

sorcery - fragmentize

artifact - smuggler's copter

enchantment - authority of the consuls

flex common - attune with the aether

flex uncommon - aether hub

flex rare - spirebluff canal
