Getting back into magic

I've recently wanted to get back into magic after around a year of not playing. I would used to always go play some standard at my local FNM. I would usually lose, mostly because I didn't have the money for all of the popular decks at the time, but I still had fun. I want to have fun playing magic again, I don't really have any friends that play magic, so I rely on FNM for that. I'm not sure where to get started on a first deck, or whats good and whats not at the moment, any tips are appreciated.

Also, I've heard of the program Cockatrice, would this work for testing decks without having to waste money on a deck that will end up not working?

I've been a fan of Untap ever since I found it, and it's totally free too.

A nice website to test out decks is "untap.in". At the moment, good decks are Abzan everything, UR Ensoul Artifact, Mono-Red Aggro. Some decks that are good but don't cost much money are UR Tutelage, GW Counters, Mono-Green Devotion, and GW Enchantress.

Go there to see the big decks at the moment.

Please use Cockatrice over Untap. I hate to be impolite to Untap users, but Cockatrice just has a straight up better interface. Its available from woogerworks.

untap.in, Cockatrice, and XMage are the best free playtesters.

As for what deck to play, it really comes down to what colors/strategy you like.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm thinking about doing modern this time around, mostly because it seems cheaper in the long run with nothing rotating out, and has a ton more cards to build decks with!
