This was posted to a group on Facebook as well, but since I value the opinions of the people on this site i'd like to hear from y'all as well

Hey guys!

I've got a question for those of you who have been around for a very long time. Recently I've been feeling like im getting burnt out on magic. I've effectively been playing every day for the last five years either actually playing or just being consumed mentally in theory or tactics or brewing. With my recent investment of magic online maybe it's just taken me wasting $200 to realize that I'm just not having fun anymore. I'm not getting anything out of it. For the first four years I'd been trying to discover my playstyle but now that I know what I really like to do I feel like winning is the only thing left to happen, and when that doesn't happen I just feel bitter; when it does there's no joy like there used to be, it's just 'yeah, that's what I came here to do'. It's like beating the elite four in Pokemon, I'm feeling like 'well what else is there?'

So right now I'm just feeling stuck. By no means do I want to quit the game, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's been in this sort of situation your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks!

Which formats have you explored?

I'm in the process of frontier right now along with everyone else, but i've done every competitive format out there sans vintage. None of the people I play paper with are interested in frontier. Commander is great, but when none of the people in your group ever change their decks games can get tired. I've even tried making intentionally bad casual decks and that isn't even appealing. So i'm just left with a bunch of stuff that I feel like i've seen before.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone might be a good way to stay interested. You know your playstyle, now try something that doesn't fit it.

Dude, honestly, take a break. I've never played MtG obsessively, but I've gotten to the point where I was killing my wrist playing League of Legends. I sat back, uninstalled the game, and did something else. Three months later, I got back into the game and felt refreshed. This was over a year ago. Before I did so, I found I was playing for the sake of playing. I wasn't enjoying myself and my skills were actually deteriorating.

Just doing other stuff helped me love the game again. I played the Metroid Prime trilogy, played lots of Touhou, and watched a metric fuckton of anime during my free time in those 3 months.

Take some months off, enjoy whatever else there is to enjoy, then come back when you feel like coming back.

Don't get rid of your cards.

Agree with some of the statements above: take some time off, do some different things. I'VE been playing Magic for a long time, and I couldn't have been without taking some time off now and then. Now, because I do other stuff as well, I only play once or twice a month (sometimes not at all) and, so far, my interest in mtg remains.

I agree that taking a break from what your doing right now is the key to making some great decisions. A change of pace really does help. MTG is journey, lol. If you focus only on the destination, everything just passes you by.
