Why do certain cards have name that the community have come up with?

Bob= Dark Confidant

Tim= Prodigal SorcererEct.

Is there any reason for this?

Not sure if it's the same for Prodigal Sorcerer, but Dark Confidant was designed and styled after a tournament winner (Bob Maher). Same goes for Snapcaster Mage.

Bob Maher won the right to design a card in 2004. His face was also put on the card. Don't know about Tim though.

Just looked it up. "Tim" comes from "Tim the Enchanter" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Look at the Ravnica: City of Guilds art specifically for the Bob reference. Sadly, the MMA art looks nothing like Bob...

There is also Finkel for Shadowmage Infiltrator. This was his prize after he won like Bob Maher.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel is commonly referred to as "Gary". I guess because it's easier to say? I never really hear anyone refer to the card by its actual name in common usage.

Playgroups do this too: there are a number of cards that have nicknames in mine.
