[Community Discussion]: Most expensive opening turn?

General forum

Posted on Dec. 15, 2014, 10:22 p.m. by Epochalyptik

So some of us love to optimize and pimp out our decks with ABUR duals and tons of foils/alters. My friends and I commend whoever gets the most money on the field on turn one.

Opening turn playing Dominus - Dreamcrusher Edition:

  1. Polluted Delta (German ONS)
  2. Tropical Island (Mint signed 3ED)
  3. Exploration (Foil CNS)
  4. Underground Sea (Mint 3ED)
  5. Imperial Seal (Mint Japanese P3K)

I'm not counting the cost of the card I found with Imperial Seal.

Total cost: $1,525 USD

What's the most expensive opening turn you've seen? Played?

Aww I guess I can't do accents on letters. Sad panda is sad. So much for Mexican Jesus.

I have no meaningful contribution to this discussion since my most expensive card is about 30 dollars so

Ha, I'm too much of a poor student for this. Oh well.

Oh, and:
Turn 1: Island, exile Elvish Spirit Guide, play Storm Crow. Monies = Infinite.

Talk about setting the bar... My most expensive cards peak at mid 30 after that my wallet holds me back so I don't have anything to offer either... :C

Stand back guys. I got this.

SLIGHTLY PLAYED Windswept Heath all up in that Khans-ness. Fetch for a Magic 2014 CORE FREAKING SET fores (There's inking on the "t"). Tapping that for 1 manana. And then I shall summon the Elvish Mystic!!

December 15, 2014 10:57 p.m.

But for real though. That's insane.

I can't match that with recent games, but I can tell an old story.

I can't recount the exact turn of events as it was so long ago, but my most expensive turn is easily with my old Academy deck. Vintage even then with added Ancestral Recall, Timetwister, and a few better artifacts like Sol Ring and Mana Crypt though I didn't have original Moxen or Lotus.

As anyone who's seen it knows it was a completely stupid deck, so I only actually played it once to demonstrate how ridiculous it was to a friend. I fizzled out after the first Twist so total value of Turn 1 at the time was around $250, but I did get the turn 2 kill.

Total value now? A lot more than $250, and more than it has any right to be.

Scytec says... #13

Holy shit...everyone else loses...guaranteed. haha. Damn. I guess mine would be in standard.

  1. Polluted Delta

  2. Swamp (Onslaught F Promo)

  3. Thoughtseize

Haha. Nothing crazy here.

JWiley129 says... #14

I can't top Epoch's, but the closest I can get is involving Mox Opal.

December 15, 2014 11:16 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #15

T1: Black Lotus, Mox Jet, Mox Pearl, Mox Ruby, Mox Sapphire, Mox Emerald, Ancestral Recall. Total: a lot.

Beat that, fellas.

That's no fun. Foil Lorwyn Thoughtseize is sexy as all hell.

December 16, 2014 1:34 a.m.

miracleHat says... #20

F*ck no. Anyways, my most expensive turn 1 would probably be:
Arid Mesa
German Plateau
Sol Ring
Lightning Greaves
equaling a grand total of
$100 (15.25% of epochs)

December 16, 2014 1:42 a.m.

My most expensive first turn.

Mox Opal

Darksteel Citadel

Signal Pest

Memnite

Foil Vault Skirge

It makes me feel sad that this is nothing compared to other people's first turns I've seen.

TelleoStar says... #22

I can't match that, but I did once, in my Sidisi, Brood Tyrant deck, do the following:

T1: Forest-> Sol Ring

T2: Lotus Cobra-> Forest->Azusa, Lost but Seeking->Polluted Delta finding Overgrown Tomb->Verdant Catacombs finding Watery Grave->Oracle of Mul Daya->revealing and playing a Misty Rainforest finding a Breeding Pool->Dimir Signet. Reveal a Crucible of Worlds on top of my library.

T3: Crucible->Play and sac all three fetchlands from graveyard, finding basics. Reveal Genesis Wave on top of my library.

T4: Fetch three times, then GeniWave for X=17. My opponents scoop after I turn over Grave Titan, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Creakwood Liege, Rune-Scarred Demon, Butcher of Malakir, Vela the Nightclad, Hell's Caretaker, Genesis, Avenger of Zendikar, Mycoloth (which promptly ate all of the Avenger and Titan tokens to enter as a 17/17 (actually 18/18 because of liege) that spawns 13 1/1's each turn (actually 2/2's because of Liege), simultaneously dealing 13 damage to each opponent via Vela, and making them sac 13 creatures via Butcher) and an assortment of lands/non-permanents.

December 16, 2014 4:04 a.m.

-Fulcrum says... #23

Well, when I get the deck complete, my most expensive T1 will be

Foil Verdant Catacombs

Full art Snow-Covered Forest

Foil Mana Crypt

Full art Azusa, Lost but Seeking

Foil Misty Rainforest

Full art Snow-Covered Forest

Foil Ancient Tomb

Foil Exploration

Foil Strip Mine

Foil Sol Ring

Foil Crucible of Worlds

I highly doubt that would ever happen, but sometimes it's come close. It's also T1 win.

That's roughly $750. About 50% of Epoch's.

December 16, 2014 4:12 a.m.

maiden77 says... #24

My most expensive turn one, Foil promo Polluted Delta $300, into unlimited Bayou $250, with judge foil Sol Ring $160 with a judge foil Mana Crypt $220 a foil conspiracy Exploration $50 and a foil MMA Sword of Fire and Ice $130. Emptying hand with a final land, Tropical Island revised $220. Total $1170. Couldn't believe my eyes, and in a cube drafted EDH deck too! Felt like a moral victory lol. Never happen again lol

December 16, 2014 8:03 a.m.

maiden77 says... #25

@vault full art Azusa and full art snow covered lands? These alters I take it?

December 16, 2014 8:06 a.m.

EddCrawley says... #26

Actually, i don't want to be 'that guy' but miracleHat you're running at 6.55% of Epoch $1,525

December 16, 2014 8:57 a.m.

meecht says... #27

I don't think I've seen any truly insane T1 plays that can shake even the smallest of sticks at Epoch's.

My best deck can only manage Scalding Tarn > Underground Sea > Sol Ring > Basilisk Collar > Relic of Progenitus, which is only about $340.

December 16, 2014 10:19 a.m.

shuflw says... #28

i would say 95% of people don't care about this when they play magic, and the other 5% can go circle jerk themselves in a private chat.

this feels like a waste of a community discussion.

Best I got is:

Polluted Delta (KTK, Russian): 1,300

Swamp (guru) 167

Dark Ritual (judge promo) 74

Entomb (graveborn) 20

Reanimate 5

Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite (judge promo) 629

Total: $2195

A foil Russian KTK Delta is $1300? 0_o

December 16, 2014 12:06 p.m.

slovakattack says... #32

meecht People often pay premiums for certain alternate languages due to greater rarity. Russian in particular gets absolutely ridiculous. I see more sold for 1100 than 1300, but that's the 'list price', as it were.

December 16, 2014 12:37 p.m.

-Fulcrum says... #33

@maiden77: Yea, they would be alters. Essentially tack on another $20 to the list price, as that's pretty common for good alters.

@slovakattack: I wish I could get some Russian cards. I can actually read them. Not well, but I can.

December 16, 2014 4:11 p.m.

smash10101 says... #39

I've had a few good ones playing proxy vintage, but that probably doesn't count for all that much, so I guess my best would be a turn one Daretti, Scrap Savant powered by a Mountain, a Mana Crypt judge promo, a Mana Vault and a Sol Ring because the vault wasn't good enough.Total: about $220, not counting the cards I tossed/drew with the +2.

December 16, 2014 4:46 p.m.

Well, here goes nothing special.

Goblin Rabblemaster

Goblin Rabblemaster

Mantis Rider

Monastery Swiftspear

Flooded Strand

Battlefield Forge

Chandra, Pyromaster

Needless to say it's not very impressive and this was when Rabblemaster was still running a respectable price.

December 16, 2014 5:36 p.m.

meecht says... #41

How did you do that on turn one?

December 16, 2014 6:05 p.m.

The most expensive I've seen was Tocco's turn one in the finals of this year's Eternal Weekend Vintage Championships.

My most expensive turn one that I've personally, consistently hit is :

December 16, 2014 6:34 p.m.

DarkMagician says... #44

Island into Ancestral Recall (beta) drawing and playing Black Lotus (beta) sacking for Show and Tell revealing Omniscience into Griselbrand. About 11,300.00 according to tcg mid. Not counting a bunch of stuff he played off of drawing with Griselbrand since it was a bunch of surprisingly cheap stuff.

Wow... Rekt... I'm gonna cry...

Turn 1- Swamp (M15 Version), Thoughtseize (Theros Version, heavily played)

The End.

December 16, 2014 8:29 p.m.

I borrowed my friend's fully powered Vintage Shops deck for a Vintage tournament earlier this year, pretty sure I got this even though I own zero of the high price cards that I'm about to mention. Mishra's Workshop, Black Lotus, Mana Crypt, Sphere of Resistance and Chalice of the Void on one. I think that comes out to somewhere around $6k-$7k in one turn.

December 16, 2014 8:43 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #47

Black Lotus alone, if it's mint condition (not necessarily graded, but you get the drift) is probably $10k at least.

December 16, 2014 8:57 p.m.

Flooded Strand (KTK) into foil GTC Sacred Foundry into Path to Exile (CON foil)

Not much, I know, but oh well...

December 17, 2014 10:27 a.m.

zyphermage says... #49

I've had mox diamond ($35) -> discarding wasteland ($80 if foil 200+). Play verdant catacombs ($35 if foil $140) -> fetching tropical island (3rd edition nm $200), play exploration ($11 urza's) and drop The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale (NM english about 800) on some opposing goblins.

My non foiled drops totals up to $1,161, minus $80 if you don't count discarding wasteland. Foiled it would be about $1,430, with beta tropical island it would be around $2,600.

December 17, 2014 11:04 a.m.

7x Island KTK non-foil.
