Community Set: Challenge Gone Awry

Hello, Community.

While we finish the final quirks to this madness of an expedition, I have a spoiler (that means it's official). Just a little something to peak your interest.

Photobucket

Now, on to the challenge. Since one of the most liked ideas was the Negashards idea, we'll be starting off with that.

From shards of Alara, each shard has its 3 cost card that costs one of each color mana from that shard. Naya has Woolly Thoctar , Jund has Sprouting Thrinax , Grixis has Sedraxis Specter , Bant has Rhox War Monk and Esper has Windwright Mage . Now the challenge, is to make our own.

The 5 "Negashards" are:

Kilgar- RWU. The main themes here will be ambush and control. The use of the keyword "Revenge" would fit nicely, but isn't necessary. There definitely needs to be a combat trick, whatever that means to you.

Avora- UGB. Think Simic meets Golgari. Acceptable keywords would be "Poisonous", "Wither", or the newly coined "Infection" keyword.

Irindu- RGU. Definitely combo-player territory. The use of our "Flow" can get a bunch of cards out fast.

Sorok- WRB. Bringing back Bushido. "Precision" would be good here. Just think Samurai.

Oturu- WGB. "Render" and "Convoke" can work together to start getting out fatties fast, but at the cost of your life. Swarm players are in heaven here. Life gain and tokens.

the cards you create can be anything except a land. All other card-types are fair game.

Card grading is based on: Leveled-ness. (Cannot be overpowered) Originality. Falls under guildines.

Guidelines Each card you submit must have one color mana from that shard, with a CMC of 3.

For each card, stay within the realm of what each shard does. If you have an idea we didn't, feel free to put it in. Maybe we'll like it.

Treat this as you would any other challenge. Submit one card idea per comment, and tell us which shard it's for.

All cards due at the end of next Sunday. Enjoy.

And just as a review of all the keywords mention:

Convoke (Each creature you tap while casting this spell reduces its cost by or by one mana of that creature's color.)

Poisonous (Whenever it deals combat damage to a player, that player gets three poison counters. A player with ten or more poison counters loses the game.)

Wither (It deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters.)

Flow (cost): (When you draw this card you may reveal it. If you do, you may cast it for its flow cost.)

Render: (Each life you pay while casting this spell reduces its cost by 1.)

Revenge X (At the end step of each turn, is this creature was in combat this turn, it deals X damage to the creature/s it was in combat with.)

Infection X (Whenever this creature deals damage to another creature, put X infection counters on that creature, which X is how much damage that creature was dealt. At the beginning of that creature's controller's turn, remove one infection counter from that creature. When all counters are removed, exile that creature and put an X/X zombie creature token into play under target opponent's control.)

Precision (Damage dealt by this cannot be prevented.)

Have fun with it!

okay im sorry i got to change the infection thing cause what you have doesnt make a whole lot of sense.

Infection x (When XXXXXXXXX deals damage to a creature, put X counters on target creature. at the begining of that creatures controllers upkeep remove 1 infection counter from creature. When all infection counters are removed put an X/X zombie creature token under XXXXXXX controlers control. where X is the creatures power) (if thats okay i feel like it makes more sense.)(if not whatever but if its based on teh power of the creature then a 1/1 with infection and reach would be broken. that way the infection number is what matters.)

I said I'd stay away from card creation because I knew I didn't have any free time but it's 4:50, I can't sleep and I need to occupy my brain. If you guys still need a third-party card judge that can help by looking at cards objectively due to not being involved in the creation process, hit me up and I will cease creation and start leering. Anyways, here's one for fun. I used the fairly ghetto but effective Snafu's Card Creator out of laziness.

For Irindu : Irindu Scroll.

Choose one - Deal 3 damage to target player; or target creature gets +4/+4 until end of turn; or draw two cards.

This card (and potentially subsequent scrolls by other users) aren't really terrifyingly original (as they serve as inverse Shard versions of the Charms) but a good way to display what each colour is doing if it has a hard colour mana cost.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you do not control any creatures with power 6 or greater, exile Otoru Gatekeeper. Play with your hand revealed, creature cards in your hand have Render (Each life you pay while casting this spell reduces its cost by 1.) and Convoke (Each creature you tap while playing this spell reduces its cost by 1 or by one mana of that creatures color.)

I like this, but at the same time it feels alittle off to me for some reason.

The other cards I'm working on are better for sure.

Hopefully this is balanced well enough: You need to keep out a strong enough creature, and your playing with your hand revealed. But it will let you get out fatties much quicker. especially in token decks. But at the same time its very weak and easy to kill.

I think will it make it alot easier to sort through all the entries. Sometimes it looks better on paper then it does on the card.

"Guidelines

1UB fits those requirements. By the way that reads, UUU, BGG or 2B do as well. It would not if the challenge read "one of EACH color mana from that shard, with a CMC of 3."

If I'm wrong, maybe Darkness1835 could clear that up? (And if thats the case, I would like to withdraw Dark Reversal, because I can't justify green in it's cost.)

I would like to make a suggestion - seems like this might have been better broken up into several challenges, one for a card for each of the nether shards. I believe that would have netted better results as this would have focused the creative energies of our group here, which typically comes up with good stuff. The currently challenge risks diffusing our creative energies over a very large scope.

I also have a question as to how this will progress as far as getting the communal set populated? Will you just be adding cards? community vote off? debate?

Also no rarity was specified, do we need to concern ourselves with that or is it open to all rarities? Looks like all the examples you gave were of commons.

What is the broader structural framework with which we are creating this set? How big overall is this set? Is it the first of a 3 part series? Do we know how many instant / enchant / creatures/ etc we are going to have for each well normally i would say color but in this case maybe shard? Are all cards of this set going to be multicolor or just some? in which case we need to think about how many are tri color, dual color, and single color?

Sorry for all the questions, but just sorta felt like there was a lot that went uncovered, and was curious to find out if there is a broader plan and how these cards will make it into a set, and how quickly you are trying to create this communal set?

I have a question, before I go home from work and try to come up with some submissions for this: For each shard, which color would be the "central" color of the shard? I would presume the odd-man-out, enemy to the other two, but I figure I'll put the question out there in case there's some other reasoning.

For all those concerned Marit Lage still needs to be edited. Although it was my idea (pretty much as it stands) I have realised it is OP.

Flow needs to be edited so that is less powerful and has no problem with its rulings.

Flow (cost): Whenever you would draw a card you may instead reveal the top card of your library. If you do and that card has flow, you may cast it for its flow cost and then draw a card.

This edit means you must have a permanent with flow in play in order 'to get your flow on'.

Infection edit so that it is less wordy and there is a synergy between wither and deathtouch.

Infection: if a creature dealt damage by CARDNAME this turn was put into a graveyard, put that card onto the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the end step.

patrickd117 says... #43

Hmm, Infection too me seems to be a very complicated keyword, thats just not worth it, elegence is very important, flow for example is fantastic, just my two cents though. But anyway, for the Irindu card, I'm just going of of the combo idea: Irindu Revivalist URG Creature- Human Wizard Flow- URG When you cast Irindu Revivalist, you may cast an instant or sorcery from your graveyard with out paying its mana cost, if you do exile it when it resolves. 2/3

May 10, 2010 8:02 p.m.

Darkness1835 says... #45

@ TAMA - I had said "the cards you create can be anything except a land. All other card-types are fair game."

The plan was to take the best creatures and use them, while getting a few "charm" like cards as well.

As for the confusion about mana costs, it seems most people have gotten it correct. If you have any questions, just check out the other cards.

May 10, 2010 8:04 p.m.

bosheck says... #46

I agree with TAMA that infection makes more sense as a "this creature comes back under your control, as a zombie if it is destroyed" sort of mechanic. It's way more smooth, and easier to keep track of. It doesn't even have to be this turn. You could have: "When CARDNAME deals damage to a non-zombie creature (or is dealt damage by...oooo) put an infection counter on it. Whenever that creature is put into a graveyard from play, return it to the battlefield under your control. It gains the zombie subtype in addition to it's other types."

Much easier to track. Plus the way it's worded now, if you block a creature with 2 infection counters on it, with an infection six creature, wouldn't it just end up with 8? I mean the obvious thing would be more reminder text (this creature can then gain no more infection counters) or make the ability optional. But then the ability's reminder text takes up SO much space, and it looks terrible.

May 10, 2010 8:09 p.m.

patrickd117 says... #47

@Bosheck I don't think that a keyword like that could be stretched over a whole wedge, its to narrow, to be used on more than 3 or 4 creatures, at max. For the previous wording of infection, the wording is confusing, there would need to be an x and y value. Additionaly, I think that wither works well for the shard, but if that is used, then it would be a bad idea to use any other types of counters in the wedge, or maybe even the set. Infection and -1/-1 counters in the same wedge seems like it would be to confusing, thats why there were only -1/-1 counters in Shadowmoor.

May 10, 2010 8:23 p.m.

bosheck says... #48

Naw. You could have instants and sorceries that drop infection counters too. The zombie thing could also be dropped, to be honest.

Alternatively you could arrange it so the ability places a lower number of 'infection counters' (1, 2?) on creatures, and when a creature leaves the battlefield, you put that many 1/1 Avoran drones, zombies, drix or whatever out there.

You could do interesting things like have your own creatures come out with infection counters already on them as well. The ability to add depth is important, I think.

May 10, 2010 8:52 p.m.

patrickd117 says... #49

ehh that's true, I like the idea of it putting tokens into play, as that interacts well with the Oturu shard, similar to Devour and Unearth.

May 10, 2010 8:58 p.m.

patrickd117 says... #50

my biggest problem is the over use of keywords, you can only have so many ones specific to a certain wedge, otherwise you just can't fit it well.
