Cards that never got their chance:

General forum

I want to talk about. Few cards that looked good on paper, but never got their chance due to rotation, better cards in the available format pool, or just might have gotten missed. L

My first nominee for a great card that never got its momentum going is Daxos of Meletis

His ability is awesome, he protects himself to a degree, and gains you card advantage when he connects with the opponent. I don't think Daxos was ever meant to finish games directly, but the 2-4 damage I see him inflicting very well could give you tools to finish out a game. Let's say Daxos swings into a player and dogs out a seige rhino. You're gaining 4 life, opponent losing 2, and you're likely able to cast the seige rhino now and gain another 3 and inflict another 3. That's a 2/2, a 4/5, 7 life gained, and 5 damage inflicted for a 7 mana investment total. Not bad in my book. He does to removal, I know, but so do most others.

I also know he has 3 drop competition in his colors with things like Geist of Saint Traft and Brimaz, King of Oreskos but I'm interested to see other arguments about why this card is kept out of competitive play.

whatbother cards do you wish had their day in the sun for one reason or another?

Daxos never deserved momentum. he really just isn't very good. And the situation you named will only happen if you HIT siege rhino. hell, if you hit with him at all! a 2/2 will block your way and kill him.

plus, he doesn't even win the "vanilla creature" test. and his shitty evasion isn't worth it by any stretch.

TMBRLZ, that'd be a cool card to see work. You can definitely build around it to make sure you always grab exactly what you want. Damn good for madness as well.

DERPLINGSUPREME, I have to respectfully disagree with everything you said. Anything that allows you to turn opponents own cards against them or at least remove their threats from their use is worth a look. There is so much evasion, cheap evasion, available that you can easily build around this guy and get there.Aqueous Form, Slip Through Space, Artful Dodge all guarantee he hits. All you need is a Dispel to protect in that instance.

@capriom85 I like the card, don't get me wrong, but compared to what cards are used in competitive play it doesn't have the impact others do. And while yes, there are lots of evasion spells, running them instead of other cards would require you to build around daxos.

in EDH on the other hand, I feel like he is an exceptionally good commander, especially with lots of ramp and extra trigger effects.

I did make Disciple work here back in THS/KTK Standard.

I had an infinite combo deck that had a very very slim possibility to win on Turn 2 and could consistently go off on Turn 3 and Turn 4. When I put in Disciple of Deceit as a tutor option it significantly ramped the speed and opportunity of the deck.

Disciple of Deceit is a very effective tutor and could do a lot of things if somebody would work with it, even in a modern scene.

@TMBRLZ I think the issue with the disciple is tapping it, which usually means attacking with it, and later in the game it will be attacking into things that will probably kill it.

Fun fact, First Response was supposed to be the new Bitterblossom while it was in standard. It was so good with pain lands in the FFL that they gave Siege Rhino Trample just to combat it. Then it was never played...

I'm very sad that Hero's Blade doesn't see play in Modern. U/W Legendaries is surprisingly cool, and you get turn 1 Steelshaper's Gift for it.

Mainly only mentioning it because Hero's Blade and Daxos of Meletis are hilarious together, even if Geist of Saint Traft and Brimaz, King of Oreskos are stronger with the blade.

A turn 3 5/4 that can only be blocked by 2/X and can play your opponent's cards seems solid to me.

DERPLINGSUPREME, do you think Daxos of Meletis can really hold his own in EDH as a commander of the "other 99"? wod t be a voltron strategy? One cool he can do it get double strike and you get two cards per attack.

As for other formats, I think building around him could be effective. Risky as hell, but effective. You run the risk of hitting walls like one Daxos dying and then Surgical Extraction ruins your day. You'd need a set of Geist of Saint Traft to lick up the slack and maybe Brimaz, King of Oreskos as well l, but even then I feel like the deck lost its momentum because it would be the card advantage off the opponent and the life gain that would keep a deck like that in the game.

TMBRLZ, that is a good aura for Daxos. I'm also a fan of throwing Daybreak Coronet on top of that.

I like how this thread degenerated from people talking about cards they wished were used more or better but degenerated into a Daxos thread. Let's build a community Daxos of Meletis EDH deck and I'll take it to my LGS to see how it fares. I have most of these things we are talking about.

I made a Daxos of Meletis EDH when Theros first came out. It's based around the exalted mechanic. Check it out:

Daxos the Exalted

It's fun to play, fun to play against, and wins most games.

@capriom85 Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. It's Zero to Hero. There are also some Hero's Blade brews on mtgsalvation that run similar but different lists.
