Benefit of playing 1 of's?

I frequently see top 8 decks running 1-of's in decks that have no tutors. I don't really see the point of this, it seems like it'd only create consistency problems. Could someone explain this to me?

If it's a card that is situationally good, but one you don't want to often see, a one of is often the best quantity to run. You'll also usually see more number of that card run in the sideboard to side it in when it is particularly effective.

One thing I have seen is running Spellskite as a one of, with more in the side if it is really needed. Kind of goes with TurboFaggot's idea.

Usually Toolbox decks like Pod hate to run more 1-ofs except for cards that are absolutely necessary because they like to have options depending on the boardstate.

Decks run 1-ofs because either they never want to see that card more than once a game, it's incredibly situational and not good in many circumstances, it's a part of a package of cards that do similar things so more than 1 or 2 is not needed, or it's used as a 5th of a card.

It depends a lot on the card.

Sometimes it's literally something you only need one of in the deck. A playset of Elixir of Immortality is pointless, it can be the last card in your library and you still won't deck yourself. A lot of decks also have raw card draw. You don't need tutors to find say AEtherling in your UW control deck, you're going to Sphinx's Revelation into it eventually.

Another reason to sometimes run one-of's. Your opponent is forced to play around a bunch of different spells being more in the deck.

Basically, 1-of slots are for cards that can either be a real drag or be really awesome, depending on the situation. If you draw it then you can decide to either craft your play around it and do something very powerful, or just ignore it and be thankful you won't draw another one.
