Before altering MTG cards a lot of people spray something on it. What is that? Also after people spray as well, which spray is that? Thanks

While spraying on a clear acrylic coat probably works fine, I find that most alterists paint on a base-coat (i.e., a few thin layers of paint, usually gray, that cover anything meant to be painted over). This provides a surface for the following layers of paint to stick to.
The last coat is a sealant.

First link after Googling "How to alter a Magic card."
Clear acrylic. Helps the paint stick.
Any afterspray is probably a sealer.
