Best Deckboxes

Talking about shuffling commander decks, Epoch mentioned a custom wooden deck box that keeps the air out of his cards, making them easier to handle and shuffle.

So far all I've got deckbox wise is Ultra Pro's Satin Tower. Really cool but not helpful in compressing or keeping the deck manageable.

anyone know of deck boxes that fit cards (double sleeved commander, or double sleeved 60-card/sideboard) tightly?

TolarianCommunityCollege has a youtube channel that does really good reviews. Hit those up.

I have an UltraPro Magnetic Flip Box I use to compress all my decks and as a holder for one of them. Mine are all double-sleeved, and I stick them all in there and keep adding cards one by one until they're totally compressed. It will fit a Commander deck fairly tightly. I use regular plastic UltraPro deck boxes for all my outher double-sleeved 60 card decks.

I keep 4 EDH decks and some tokens in two fat packs. I'm in dire need of more space though. I actually carry a deck in an index card holder. Yeah...

The UltraPro mag boxes are decent, but they're very bad in terms of security. The lid will pop open if the box is dropped, and then your deck is on the floor.

I personally use custom cedar deckboxes, but that's not exactly an economical option for everyone.

I've seen someone use a wooden wine box, which actually turned out to be a very secure and attractive little system for a couple decks and some dice.

UltraPro makes some two-piece clear plastic boxes that are sturdy and secure.

And don't forget that you can pack some commons and uncommons into the box if you really need to compress the deck. It's not an optimal long-term solution due to stress on the box and the inconvenience of the extra cards, but it's viable as an intermediate solution.

You can go Google up 'Aaron Cain deckboxes' and click on the Facebook page (it should be the first result) to get w custom built one from him. Great quality custom woodwork.

Another good one is Wyrmwood Gaming. They take customs but have great sizing options for multiple deck sizes.

They're kinda on the expensive, premium quality side, though.

i don't agree with the whole thing TolarianCC and other say about the magnetic boxes being bad just because they open if dropped. you can easily strengthen the magnets by installing stronger earth magnets that you can get at Walmart or anywhere like that if you like the box itself and like the idea of a magnetic closure.

the wooden ones are very nice but expensive.

@shinobigarth: My counterargument is that now you have to finish the manufacturer's job, and also that it's fairly difficult to modify the box without causing damage or ruining the material. You also won't be able to completely protect against drops regardless of what magnets you use.

I like to use the old-style Ultra-Pro ones, but mine has broken from excessive use/cramming. I would go for either the Ultra Pro Pro Dual Deck box, or something along the lines of the Ultimate Guard Flip n Tray.

For Commander/EDH, Dragon Shield has some nice Acrylic Deck boxes and Ultra Pro also makes their pro deck box (not to be confused with the pro dual) specifically for Commander/EDH.

for some people yeah, though i have experience with craft type things, playing with leather, using earth magnets, etc.

and it wouldn't protect against all falls of course, but if were gonna use the drop argument, i wouldn't use wood boxes because dropping them could really ding up the wood and make it look bad and make that $50+ purchase hurt, so theres pros and cons to all boxes just like anything else. maybe you could just say don't be a spaz and keep your boxes in your backpack so you don't drop them?

The drop argument is really just one example of the larger issue. Even when kept in a bag, the magnetic boxes can open easily. I've seen people lose expensive cards because a mag box opened in their bag and the cards got folded by the other objects (dice bags, binders, etc.). Now, part of that is poor packing habits, but it's still an indication that something's wrong with the box's design. Hell, the box will open if you knock it over on the table. There are so many alternatives (UltraPro's friction-sealing vinyl boxes, the two-piece plastic boxes, old fat packs, etc.) that don't have this issue that there really isn't much reason to prefer the mag boxes other than the aesthetic appeal of the leather.

i don't use them nor am i really advocating them, it just seems they are getting somewhat of a bad rap, perhaps more criticism than they deserve. since i don't need anything fancy i tend to stick with the basic UP ones with the mana symbols.

Woah, I've never heard of anyone else using a wooden wine box. I can confirm that they're very secure and hold quite a bit (and surprisingly fit Magic cards perfectly on their side). Not the most compact thing, but it easily fits in my bag with my binder.

Oh man those are really sexy. I could see it being sort of annoying to pull out and put in maybe but other than that they look great.

The absolute best deckbox currently made is the Ultimate Guard Flip n Tray. There is only one place to get them in the US right now online, but hopefully they'll expand distribution channels here. The company is based in Germany and everything they make is very high quality. http://www.ultimateguard.com/en/boxes-cases/flip-n-tray/flip-n-tray-deck-case-80.html

If you want the absolute best, KMC or Dragon Shield sleeves w/ Ultimate Guard binders and deckboxes is the way to go.
