It was sitting between $5-6 forever and then just this month it has spiked to almost triple the price. What happened?

its just been played alot in jund and stuff I think everything has been kind of inflated recently due to cards seeing a bit more play.

Awesome, I have like 7 and 4 foils :)

But not awesome for the omnipresent modern barrier of entry :(

The solution is to buy the Modern Event deck. You get $45 back just from the Inquisitions. (I think there are only three, but I could be wrong.)

I wouldnt really buy the event deck its 75 bucks on average and yeah you can get some inflated cards from it but unless youre going to play the deck is probably not worth it

You can get the event deck below retail price, and the cards you get in it are by far worth more than $75.

No you actually cant get it under 75 unless your lgs sells it that cheap ebay listings sell at 75 as well same on amazon if im not mistaken. And again not really the cards that are worth stuff in there are anywhere from 30-50% inflated and will probably drop at the end of the year the only ones that wouldnt are the sword and elspeth but elspeth really isnt played that much and yeah the sword is good so thats a thing. The cards that are actually worth picking out of the deck only add up to about 80 bucks thats with inflated prices if you got them when they were 50 awhile back it was a good deal but at retail which it is mostly sold as it is not worth it.

Not true. I got 3 for $44 each on Amazon. It's a steal at that price. I can't remember all of the goodies, but among other things, you get:

There are also playsets of rare modern-playable lands. A great buy even at $60.

It's not really that sudden of a spike or unexpected. Once there was no chance of it being in MM15 it was only going to rise as modern season got underway and steadily rise till it was over (just like all modern staples do). Look for it to drop back down to $6 or $7 this winter as modern slows down. That is usually when the staples settle down to their "offseason" values.

What are you talking about? I bought one out of the commons box of my LGS for $0.25.

The fact that it wasn't reprinted in MM15 has a lot to do with it's price spike.

Also, it's Modern season, which means that a lot of cards are spiking all over the place.

Also Jund needs it and it's way better against burn and zoo than thoughtseize. It's a fair price.

Did you just ignore 50% of the event deck? Even in the event that you can only get it at retail it is above $100.

I think with the exception of Tron and Grixis it's probably the best hand disruption spell against most of the major decks in the Modern meta right now.

Yeah it can't hit Big Fish or Bananaman, but it hits most of the major hitters: Goyf, Snapcaster, Bob, Lili, other disruption and counterspells, burn, etc. without costing the two life that thoughtseize dings you.

I am aware of why it is a good card, but i just didn't understand what would have caused it to triple in price so suddenly. (I am currently accepting the "it is the start of modern season" answer as most likely until further notice.)

Thanks for the discussion and help guys.

Also the modern event deck is easily available for under $70 as I just recently got one on TCGplayer for like $55. And the total value of the cards in it is like $170+ (even if you only use cards worth $5+ it is still worth more than $70)
