To Foil or not to foil

Hey guys. Just looking for some opinions. First off, I luckily came in to money which I will be using to build at least one legacy deck, bug delver. The question I have is whether or not I should completely foil this deck, or build sneak and show, and also get the extra pieces to turn my bug delver into a vintage deck as well or build a cube along with it. Thanks for any input

GoldGhost012's got it .

I personally would prefer more decks, as I love options to play with, but that's just me.

Build more decks, foil don't add much functionality.

FOILS ADD ALL THE FUNCTIONALITY!!!

Foil doesn't add ANY functionality. But it does add awesome.

yeah, with limited budget multiple decks is better than one foil deck, playing just one would get really dry really quickly.

if you have a group to play with I would probably do a cube over multiple decks, honestly. Would lead to fun for everyone around and be even less repetitive

Legacy decks are expensive to foil, and I have a personal policy about playing cards in decks. I always play all of the same card. Same art, same condition, same foil/nonfoil state. This way, my opponent can't use visual differences in the cards to determine whether I still have one in my hand or not. Whenever I use a spell like Thoughtseize , I note the condition of the cards and try to remember the art and set. This means that if you have a playset of a particular card in your decklist, you'd need foils of all of them before you could play any of them.

EDH is a little more justifiable because you only need one foil of most of your cards.

Go with multiple decks. Not necessarily for the fact that it gets dry... I have been playing Jund in modern and legacy for a while now... It never gets old.

But more so that if you had a friend wanting to play at an event with you, but had no deck, you could let them borrow it... Allowing them to have the awesome legacy experience with you.

Just foil out your lands. Foil Dual lands tap for 2, don'tchaknow.

Just to play devil's advocate to the great advice already given. One of the upsides of seeking out foils however is that it's a better investment if you're ever considering selling the cards again down the line. Foils, in general, tend to hold value better. Even if a card falls out of favor in a list, the foil price might not swing as rapidly. For instance, both the regular and foil version of Knight of the Reliquary have lost about $3 off their price over the last few months, but $3 off $23 is a big difference from $3 off $8. Just something to keep in mind.

More cards, more fun! Don't bother foiling, just buy a ton of cards!

It really depends on what you like more. I wanted to foil out Modern Jund instead of finish my legacy deck, cause no one in my area plays legacy. I also just like the way certain art looks foiled. Armor shines more and such.

Compromise. Foil out half of the bug delver deck, then build half of the sneak and show deck.

You people and your excessive money, you disgust me.

I also love BUG Delver. I have lists built for both modern and legacy, and if I ever miraculously came into money through winning some thing or another building those would be my first order of business. But my vote is to build the other deck, that way you can lend it to a friend to play in a tournament with you.

I mean you realize either way, excessive money is excessive money whether it's spent on Foils or Legacy staples. So if I choose to use it on foils I disgust you? Those are strong words my friend.

ChiefWannaHacka Sarcastic, haha. I meant disgusted more in a way of I WISH I had the money to foil out a legacy deck. Or buy a legacy deck period.

September 19, 2014 11:04 a.m.

Ahhhhh, ok lol. I was real confused, cause either way the money is excessive. I was gonna feed the troll, and things were about to get real!

As many others have said, it comes down to preference. I have people in my local area who are nuts for foils. Others don't care. As someone else said, their value not only holds, but will slowly climb with time while the regular stays put. But that doesn't make any difference if you are not going to sell the cards.

Here are a few things I do to make to pimp out my decks without going through the money and trouble of getting everything foil. If you are a fan of promos or alternate arts, do the cards in the deck that you can do. Things like full art Ponder or FNM Dismember can really make a deck look unique (I have a modern Vengevine deck with about half the deck promo'ed). Another thing you can look into is getting some cards altered. While there are rules about playability for some of those (so check with your local judge first) you can take one or two of your favourite cards and have them looking awesome and again, unique. It makes people pause and usually brings smiles to those who see those for the first time. My most ambitions alters was for my Tron deck where I got one of each of the different art pieces for the tron lands from Chronicles (4 arts per card) and had them all altered for 12 different beautiful pieces of art (will have to post them on here at some time). Here is an example of what I'm talking about if you're not sure: http://i565.photobucket.com/albums/ss94/reichert-man/extsiege-gang.jpg

TL;DR: If you like pimp, pimp. If you don't care for it, then just get two decks.
