I amlooking to get back on the Modern train. I plan to put Tooth and Nail and Soul Sisters together. These decks are not up for debate, Itsbwhat I have chosen to play. That said...does it make more sense to just buy the cards outright or to buy a case of MM2017 and piece out what I get in the boxes I'm not using to put the decks I want together? I haven't bought MM before and am wondering if I usually break even or better on boxes. What has been your past experiences with MM sets?

Definitely singles, especially for those 2 decks. Unless you have access to a huge group of modern players to trade value with, but even thats pretty tough

If you want to build those decks, the cheapest way will always be to buy singles. If you want to grow your collections, then mm3 looks to have a lot of value but it isnt guaranteed you'll break even. So don't buy boxes unless you want more than two decks from the set.

I recently got a box of eternal masters, I basically broke even, making a profit in card value of around $5 based on card prices at that time. I pulled a force of will in the box but most packs did not pay for themselves it was the force of will that really helped it be worth while. So I can say with confidence, don't buy less than a box if you choose sealed. But you would be better off buying singles if you are not planning to sit on cards and wait for prices to rise.

If I buy boosters, I buy a case. If you have to pay more than $200 a box, mm17 will not be a good gamble. I bought my $200 each with no tax or shipping cost. But I am feeding my EDH habit and I have 0 of the fetches included in this set. As I can't justify paying $10 plus for a single card, I will buy cases from time to time. But mainly just playing limited each week, n trading us where most of my new cards come from.

And eternal masters value was a joke, if you don't luck out and get one of the high value cards, then you won't get near to breaking even. Which is why you can find it for about $175 a box.

Always buy singles. Packs are designed for drafts.

Singles. The amount of money put into buying packs can be used to purchased high value cards.

1 pack is $13 CAD .

If you have expendable cash and don't mind gambling then buy packs.

As hyped as MM17 is, there are A TON of junk cards worth next to nothing in every slot. Buy singles.

Frankly, what everyone says is right. Buying a box is a gamble in which you will be lucky to get even. My box of EM got even only because I pulled a foil Vampiric Tutor and a Mana Crypt.

That being said, getting a box is a good way to get a lot of quality trade fodder and EDH stuff. But the question you gotta ask yourself is "is this really worth 200 bucks, considering that 80% of stuff I pull will be jank?"

I concur wth everyone else. I used to buy packs all the me and got super tired of losing money. I was a Jew player at the time, and I regret just about every pack I have ever opened with the exception of a KTK fat pack that had 3 fetches in it and a FRF pack that had ugin in it.
