No. It isn't played outside of standard or EDH. Its too expensive to be effective in modern

It's a sad fact, but most hydras (I can't think if any that increase, actually, but I might be overlooking something) lose value fast, due to many things, one of which is being to slow for formats outside standard or edh.

That being said, I totally traded a Kalonian Hydra for a Thoughtseize .

Both of us knew that one would hold value and one wouldn't. But the guy played standard, and I wanted the Thoughtseize for modern.

Yes, actually most hyrdas do increase over the long term sometimes even doing better than when they were in standard. There's enough appeal in them even though they don't see much play in competitive scenes, similar to angels as well.

It's a long and slow march though. Primordial Hydra has only recently rebounded and holding around its debut price. Apocalypse Hydra is higher than it's ever been as it Protean Hydra , but you're still only talking a couple bucks.

Not really worth holding on to, it's probably best to trade or sell them now at $15. It might very well be get to $20 again, but it will be years from now.

Aside from flavor and commander, very few cards like him ever see any real play outside of standard.
