Does anyone know why Rhystic Study went up? It went from the ~4-5 range to ~8-9.

As a commander player, I can take some guesses, but is there any specific catalyst in particular?

the.beanpole says... #2

Rhystic Study has shown a really steady price increase for quite a while according to the mtggoldfish price history. It is pretty underwhelming in single player formats, but scales well with multiplayer groups. I'd chalk it up to Commander/EDH growth as a format, 100%.

February 9, 2017 1:19 p.m.

Rhystic Study is one of those cards that can fit in literally any deck that's blue. You almost have to have a good reason to justify not running it. It's simply that good.

So, old card + relative ubiquity in a popular format = high price

Well fff's!!! Chalice of the Void just jumped up another $30-$40 to be about $75-$80 EACH!! This just happens to occur when I'm actively looking to get a playset of them.... I guess it will join the ranks of goyf as far as non-reserve list cards I'll never be able to justify buying. :(

saj0219 says... #7

GeminiSpartanX: hope it sees a reprint in MM3?

Also: why the jump? Is it because chalice on zero is an easy out against Puresteel Paladin decks? I was under the impression they hadn't done anything real yet (like totally decimate a tournament, etc)

February 10, 2017 9:35 a.m.

GeminiSpartanX says... #8

saj0219- I think it is a pure speculator buyout since it has all the factors of a card that could hold a higher price. 1. It's a 4-of in every deck that wants to play it. 2. There isn't a high supply, having only 2 printings with the 2nd printing being MM1 plus a small amount due to a masterpiece version of it. 3. It's seen in multiple competitive decks in both Modern and Legacy.

Nothing new has caused this to rise in price since Cheerios has yet to put up any significant numbers. It's the stupid artificial inflation buyout crap that always happens to tournament-level cards to make the game more inaccessible for competitive play.

Mox Opal is seeing some increases. The scars version appears to be up 7$ putting it at near 60$.

Does anyone know if this is cheerios related?

February 17, 2017 2:02 a.m.

Ryotenchi- It is 100% cheerios related. The deck is fun, although sometimes inconsistent.

Thats saddening. I just picked up the deck on mtgo soon as sram was available. Im still a 4 paychecks short on the aether vials.

Speculators are buying out Eidolon of the Great Revel because they expect its demand to rise with the upcoming Goblin Guide + fetchlands reprints (Modern Masters 2017).

Prices were 5-6 USD each. Copies are currently going up on eBay for $10-25 each.

Why would Through the Breach and Colossus of Sardia go up, they seem useless?

March 23, 2017 2:04 p.m.

grumbledore says... #19

Through the Breach is a staple in modern Griselbrand

Wasn't Grasp of Fate bought out too?

March 23, 2017 2:10 p.m.

Bovine073 says... #21

Profet93, Through the Breach is sixty dollars because it turns out that breaching an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is really frickin unfair.

March 23, 2017 2:27 p.m.

Dorotheus says... #22

Colossus of Sardia that got bought out is only the paper Antiquities version strictly because it is from that set.

Through the Breach with A LOT of potential creatures is just really good, let alone you can cast the card for 2RR if you understand how to correctly.

If the turn 4 rule is upheld in modern, Seismic Assault is likely to be a format considerate card, since it works with a 4 drop and 5 drop creature, so there is redundancy to be had.

March 23, 2017 8:02 p.m.

Dorotheus- What is the 5 drop creature that Seismic Assault works with?

Phaetion- Yes, it does seem like that card has been bought out on tcgplayer, although I'm not sure why someone would do that since it only sees occasional EDH play.

The Gitrog Monster, but this is really taxing on your mana to do it, as you have to be 4+ colors. although you have to have several lands in hand when you cast it but I do not think the deck is good enough.

It seems as though the portal printing of Sleight of Hand (the only black boardered printing) is getting bought out on tcgplayer. There are only a handful of copies left.

April 25, 2017 7:05 a.m.

CChaos says... #39

On mtgstocks Protean Hulk is $24.74 USD. Increased by 579.7%. It was $3.69 prior to the unbanning.

April 25, 2017 9:34 a.m.

Felidar Guardian emergency ban, 2 days after announcing no standard ban. As annoying as that is, I'm reading there's opportunities with Aetherworks Marvel, Noxious Gearhulk, Always Watching (which already spiked) and various Zambies.

I don't play standard but I'm pretty skeptical that now is Marvel's time to shine when its already failed to live up to the hype multiple times. Also Gearhulk doesn't deal with vehicles, so I'm hoping some underdogs will pop.

April 28, 2017 7:07 p.m.

I'm not sure but if I had to guess it'd be True-Name Nemesis being better positioned in a format where it doesn't have to worry about Terminus.

The other thing I can think of is Miracles players switching over to Stoneblade variants since something like 90% of their cards overlap.
