I paid 250 for it and got (all revised) 2 Tropical Island 3 Plateau 2 Scrubland 2 Savannah some Sylvan Library tutors out the ass (enlightened, demonic, worldly etc...) a shit ton of beta and alpha basic lands... There was so much good shit in it... sigh....

I bought a The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale for $350 a few years ago. It took awhile to pull the trigger that day but I do not regret it today for sure.

I know a guy who got his playset of Tarmogoyf for free. He bought a pack of M10 I believe(may have been Kamigawa), he opened a foil Pithing Needle . The guy next to him said he wanted it and he asked, "How many Goyfs does that get me?" The guy said 4 and also, Ill throw in another of the same pack. I also know some guys who challenged SCG when they bought out all the duels and got just as many. In other words, my friends are both lucky and geniuses...

Unfortunately, my best return so far was on Rakshasa Deathdealer . I bought 3 but I knew I should have speculated on it. I am still waiting on Tromokratis though.

My friend traded away a F Bloodstained Mire and got ~10 shocklands (4 Steam Vents , 2 Breeding Pool , 3 Sacred Foundry , 1 Watery Grave original. I think that is the best deal that i have ever seen in a while.

I don't know if I can top anybody here, but I bought a revised Underground Sea by selling all of my pokemon cards, getting about $120 in store credit, and those things are up over $300 now.

Either trading for 8-10 Jace, Architect of Thought when he was sub 10, and then trading them off after he jumped to 25ish.
Or when I bought a set of Master of Waves for $5 each and then after the Pro Tour I sold one of them for $20 and traded off the rest.

I bought all the ABUR duals, most revised, two unlimited, just before the price hike, so they pretty much double in price, after I bought em. Having all the filterlands, shocks and fetches since release for original dirt cheap values, means my EDH decks just gain value daily. I bought most of my foil generals before EDH exploded, so my foil Arcanis is now $20, i paid about 5, foil Sen triplets the same, My Foil damnation i got for around $10 way back when, now look at it lol. I never hesitate to purchase the cards I want now, as most of the time, they go up anyway, due to the EDH popularity

I got a playset of Courser of Kruphix starting at release and eventually getting a foil one before they were more than $8. Ending up trading for Thoughtseize and the foil for a series of costly-er cards for my edh deck.
Later when M15 came out I was the only one I knew who was interested in the Goblin Rabblemaster and I picked up 4 for next to nothing and turned around and traded them when they were about $15 each for a huge variety of things.
On a sadder note, I picked up Sylvan Caryatid for $5 each and then traded my playset when they were up to about $10. le sigh Made a profit I suppose but they've since doubled in cost Again

bought a friend out of the game for 200 dollars in 1998. 156 various revised/unlimited dual lands, playsets of all the moxen, playset of timetwister/timewalk, full playsets of everything from legends, arabian nights, and the dark plus some random alpha/beta/unlimited/revised stuff. He kept a playset of unlimited Black Lotus.
I packed them all up into rubbermaid totes and have them stored in my parents basement waiting for my son to be old enough to open them and understand their worth. Yes, I sleeved them in dragon shields. It cost me nearly as much to sleeve them as it did to buy them at the time. Good Investment.
Before I get a bunch of questions asking if I will trade any of it or commenting on my friend being stupid ect. I cant disagree to be honest he was more of an acquaintance, a friend of a friend. All of these cards he had he stole (every single one of them) so I didnt feel too badly about the fact that he was getting a fairly raw deal. He needed rent or wanted to buy some computer game or something and when the conversation turned to him selling his collection I jumped at it.
In so far as wanting to trade any of it: someday, when the time is right. I want my son to be the one to open them and discover their worth.
Trust me it has been difficult to not rip all the packing tape off the rubbermaids and raid them but I want my son to have something he can work with, even if it means he just sells them and buys something he wants/is interested in.

you are a good dad mate, when he cracks that bad boy open, he will be able to play in any format with any deck he wants, either with the cards, or by swapping them. Either way, thats pretty awesome. Make sure if he does sell or use em, you indent your own care of the cards, into him! lol. I think you win the thread! lol

Several years ago I went on a buying spree and got all kinds of stuff, but the biggest returns were from two $130 Unlimited Underground Sea s, a $100 Player Rewards foil Wasteland , and a $75 Chains of Mephistopheles. I had a chance at a $120 Italian The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale but I missed out.
October 16, 2014 5:16 p.m.
Traded three Huntmaster of the Fells Flip for three Snapcaster Mage , I realize its not a purchase but its the strongest return I've probably gotten. In terms of actual investments, I got a Volcanic Island days before the doubling of all the values of the duals, so that's something.

I made a golgari token deck with Pack Rat
and Desecration Demon
during the INN-RTR standard, but that failed horribly so I put that deck aside and moved onto Boros Deck.
After INN rotated, I sold most of my deck for a playset of Master of Waves and Boros Reckoner
I think we tied on that overall in terms of value

The latest one for me is trading for Dig Through Time at 2$ea on release weekend and selling them this past weekend for 8-10 a pop.

the duals are UR and the Moxen are Unlimited. The duals range from Heavily Played to NM depending on which colors buddy played. As I recall all of the moxen are fairly beat.
They're nice, don't get me wrong but there is also mint playsets of Baghdad, Tabernacle, Eureka!, Alexandria, Abyss, Moat, Chains. Im fairly sure there is either an Alpha or Beta Ancestrall Recall that is beat to hell, the rest of what was in Alpha and Beta was mostly commons I know there was a set of black bordered Sengirs some Bolts, Serra Angels ect. Everything else I mentioned like timewalk/twister were from unlimited, and in average to heavily played condition.
Im sure there will even be some stuff that I will be surprised at or have forgotten about, since I havent seen any of them in over 13 years.
One thing I do recall is that while there were full playsets of everything from Legends, Arabian Nights, and The Dark, thats a minimuum. Im pretty sure there was like 8-10 of Baghdad I remember that card specifically because my friend was helping me sort it out and asked me if he could have a set as a souvenir. At this time, baghdad was played in nothing I think they were probably sub 10 bucks then but I said no and gave him 4 Revised Savannah instead, which at the time were right around ten apiece. I just wanted to save ALL the arabian nights, legends, and the dark.
