Are older prints of Doubling Season going to drop?

Probably one of the most hyped reprints in BBD is Doubling Season. Prices of BBD's Doubling Season are obviously going to be inexpensive compared to previous prices for the card due to it being in a heavily drafted $4 pack set. However, due to it being Mythic, having new art, and having a new border, will older printings, specifically the Modern Masters version because I own one, drop very much? Is it something I should sell, or will it hold value?

every card drops in price when theres a reprint. but you shouldnt look at mtg is an investment. its still a good card you can use.

You say heavily drafted. But the time it will be drafted is small. Usually these special draft sets get drafted for limited time, as wizards likes to focus more on standard sets. There is only 1 month between this and core 19 release. So don't see this dropping price like a standard set would. Also, it being moved to mythic rare will stop it from being opened too often (I'm thinking prob about as many as modern masters had if not less). Also from those I have heard from, this is the least liked art for the card.

Will the price drop, yes. Will it drop a lot, not by more than 25%. Will it rebound, in my opinion yes. A lot of people care which art they have in their decks. And the effect of this card is not duplicated. As more people play commanders that can use it, the more demand will push its price.

Thank you DankStompy and pskinn01 for answering so fast! Yes, DankStompy, it is a good card and I definitely play it a lot in EDH - I just didn't want to lose a lot of money if it was going to drop significantly (like $25+).

pskinn01: I do agree with most of what you said. I never actually drafted any Conspiracy sets, so I didn't know how long they usually stuck around. However, this is a more draft-focused set and is likely to be opened even more thanks to all the great reprints. But I know a lot of people dislike the new art, and the combination of Mythic, new (worse) art, and new border will likely stop it from dropping very much. And it will never, unless it gets banned for some reason, stop being played in commander.

Thanks guys! I'm not really that great at Mtg finance stuff, but I guess It's best to keep mine, especially since I play it.

older printings will not drop by a lot. I see them going from 60 -> 50, for all the reasons mentioned above.

Look at what the card does. I'm not trying to patronize either. Literally look at what this card does, for its cost.

Now, consider what all cards get a boon from this AND it's color. Green. Then take into account just the Hydra creatures abilities. Now spike into Simic colors. Continuing on to the rest of the palette....you get the picture.

Now look at the formats in which it's predominantly used. THAT right there, is what will determine a good portion of value retention.

All reprints injure a card's value. However, doubling season is unique in that for its cost, it blankets both counter and token generation (especially for those who use prototype portal on artifact lands in commander). Now, with the advent of planeswalkers being classified as legendary status and allowing for multiple planes walkers of the same type but different names....

The card has so much utility and even with the reprint prior, it damaged it's value minimally. I also know Tron is a huuuuuuuuuuge green lover and, good old Karn Liberated, Desolation Twin, Ugin, Endless One, Eldrazi Titans....

There's numerous reasons but here's the crucial detail:

Old art is always the prime art. It's usually the sought after art too. Now this isn't 100% true but it's always a safe bet to lean on and, even if you don't meet someone who wants the old art initially, I can however guarantee you will. Too many people want the nostalgia from when they started. The older art cards usually tend to hold value more.

MTG is funny like that.

In my experience, this reprint of a card like Doubling Season probably won't hurt the value of the other printings of the card too much.

and depending on how much this set is opened, and due to the potential of Battlebond having a small print run, it might hang on in price with the originals.

Look at Force of Will... the new printing is more expensive than the original! playing MTG finance is a strange game.
