Looking for deck ideas for me to teach my 6 year old how to play.

40-60 card Mono Burn is where I always start new players. Very easy concept and not a lot of complex mechanics to worry about.

I've also built this deck myself to teach new players. It reaches to the heart of most new players, Gain life, get fatty.

Start simple, and slowly build up.

I don't like to use cards like Chaplain's Blessing or Vessel of Volatility that aren't good cards.

I go for mostly creatures, but I keep them to vanillas, french vanillas (evergreen keywords only, like Serra Angel), and virtual vanillas (they have some effect the turn you play them, but are vanillas after that, like Elvish Visionary).

I keep the number of different types of effects low, but have some repetition for each of them ("that Air Elemental has flying just like the Seacoast Drake that you played a few turns ago did").

But remember that by far the most important thing is that he/she has FUN. If your child isn't enjoying some aspect of the game ("I don't like it when you Doom Blade my Craw Wurm - Doom Blade my Runeclaw Bear instead"), try to remove that part of the game for awhile.

Also, if you can, get some cards that they think are "cool." If it's a girl, get some pretty merfolk or angels or vampires or unicorns or whatever she thinks are cool - or a boy who likes frogs or angels or vampires or bears or WHATEVER. I always enjoyed it when I could play an elf or angel or bird or Pegasus.

This Pegasus tribal deck (white weenie aggro) that I snitched from MerlinsBeerd and tinkered with is fun, easy to play, and surprisingly powerful. It can take down a whole multiplayer table. And it costs around $25. The original is Pegasus for the win! (seriously, best deck ever) and my version is:

Maybe go to your local card shop and pick up 2 of those 30 card starter deck (one for you and one for him)(they should be free) to explain the basics of the game (they dont have any complex mechanics)then maybe go build two 60 card decks?

I've been teaching my daughter (she's not quite 5, but has shown interest) with some mono colored decks. Honestly, the only thing I did was to make sure that there was every card type in there (and notable subtypes, like Auras and Equipment), and have kept things like counters, and triggered abilities to a minimum. The biggest limiting factor has been her reading level, and her attention span (once SOS (shiny object syndrome) kicks in, there is little to do to fight it).
