New to Pauper

Deck Help forum

So me and my play group are thinking about getting into pauper, we've been playing budget modern (with the exception of my storm deck) but we're tired of dropping a hundred or more per deck....

we all like to brew so i would love if someone could comment on the general power level of the format just to help get me in the correct mind set. I mean I play storm in modern and can kill turn 3, so I know that it's not that fast, but U pauper delver seems extremely potent and could compete at the modern level.

I know that i will pick up some delver variant (It's always been a dream to pilot delver competitively).

But i want a secondary list (I can see my friends getting tired of playing it every time.... It looks like it can be degenerate). I've brewed/modified two lists that look pretty fun

Tortured bones: seems like a allot of fun, atm a little temperamental but just needs additional tuning.

UB Teaching Fish: looks like fun for me but not much fun for my opponents.

I would love advice on either list, additional ideas to brew around (I'm trying storm around Thermo-Alchemist and Quicksilver Dagger but I don't think it's actually viable) or just general knowledge about pauper.

Also I would of posted this in the pauper forum, but i didn't see a deck help forum.

Thanks for any information that you can give me!

Try Curiosity / Firebrand Archer storm instead, it is cheaper and is a real list!

Excuse me as I shamelessly advertise my deck for a sec: Suicide is occasionally the answer

Otherwise the pauper decks I know of are:

  • Affinity (quite good with legal artifact lands)

  • Reanimator

  • Inside Out combo

  • Elves

  • Mono B Control

  • Mono B Devotion

  • Burn

  • Bogles

  • Tron

  • That one flicker combo deck that I don't remember the name of, I think it was Familiars or something?

  • Mono G Land Destruction

  • Goblins

  • RW aggro w/ some artifacts as well (not quite affinity)

  • Slivers

  • Faeries I guess

I play White/green slivers and its pretty good. Also, Boros Burn is sweet, but affinity is insanely good.

Tagging Gattison for assistance.

Thanks so much for all the deck lists so far! I've become somewhat familiar with the metta decks, but haven't studied the match ups yet. one of my friends is going to build some kind of tron. Part of me wants to go ahead and build tortured existence but the brewer in me wants to take a crack at something new, there's just a lot to take in and I haven't found a great starting point

I like faeries and land destruction, because I'm a monster.

I play mostly "for fun" decks, but some of them have turned out to be pretty effective. At the very least I have a folder full of funky homebrews that might inspire you here. They're all decks that I have built and maintain in paper.

Last time I looked, I believe Astral Steel was the only truly aggressive Storm spell left unbanned in pauper ( Grapeshot and Empty the Warrens are both banned). However if you enchant an Elusive Spellfist with it, it could work. I did something a bit more experimental along those lines here: Gluten-Free Cheerios.

Beyond that, if you just want interesting ideas, I like building around Bloodbriar (so does my friend eyes2sky), but you seem to like Control more. So, here are some almost-shameless plugs under the guise of "discussion." =P

I've been tinkering on and off with several ideas: a sort "Processor" style hand-hate UB deck, Jace's Groundhog Day; an Aikido (steal-control) deck, Steven Seagal, C**kpuncher; and a degenerate land destruction deck, USS Deathstar (NCC-1701-FU). I've also always wanted to build a good creatureless pauper deck. And lastly, I just made Grixis "ping" deck that might interest you also, U.B.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Pings.

There's also stuff like UR blitz (Flying Purple Pauper Eater) that you might find fun, but I don't know if people are still playing it competitively or not.

Sorry to barrage you with links, but I hope some of that helps at least a little. Happy brewing! I hope you find pauper as fun as I do!

Welcome to Pauper...it's a brewers paradise for sure and I would agree with Gattison that there are a lot of fun decks that turn out to be pretty good. The format is not solved by any means and gains new cards every set and I'm sure we'll see some down-grades in Modern Horizons. Some decks to look at that you might like: Boros Heroic: No Glove, No Love ;); Mono-Blue Agg-trol: The Unstable Paradox Project (you could add Delver to this easily); This Orzhov deck Suck My Kiss and how about some Dimir Stax? Not many stax decks in Pauper...your friends will not like this one: Salt Mine Prison Escape.

sorry for the delayed response, but thank you all for the information and deck lists! I have a few ideas so far, but Im going to keep brewing and hunting until I find one I love! thanks again

BW Delirium Crier here's my first attempt at something original!

My goal is to build a grindy midrange that attacks our opponents hand (while also discarding cards that we can then later use).

I really like Icatian Crier , I think that there is a deck to be built around it. Yall helped me in the past so I would love your input on this rough start! thanks
