New to MTG: Just bought a MTG DB Toolkit.

Deck Help forum

Posted on March 3, 2014, 1:41 p.m. by Vintage

Hi

So iv just got a MTG DB Toolkit 2014 delivered and iv just spent awhile going though the cards and organising what iv got to work with. But the problem is, I've obviously never put a deck together in Magic before. So if any of you more seasoned players wouldn't mind helping me out, that would be greatly appreciated.

I also spent the time writing up every card such as Creatures, Instants, sorcery and enchantments into a notepad.

A good place to start would be to look at the rare and/or mythic cards you got, and build decks around those. They'll have the gold or red symbols on them.

You can also use the search feature on TappedOut to search for decks that use specific cards.

Or you could post the names of the rare cards you got and we can help you out with examples. If you put the card names in double brackets it will link the card in your post.

Can you copy the list into a deck? Then we can easily sort by color and function. Link the deck here when you are done and I will take a look.

You got a good mix of cards there. Another thing you can do, which is good practice for deckbuilding, is have a draft with some friends. Shuffle all these cards up, split them into stacks of 15, and give each person three stacks. Then take one stack each, pick a card from it, and pass it to the person next to you. Continue until there are no cards left, and start with the next stack, passing them the other way. As you get better at it, you'll see which cards go together to make a stronger deck.

Just from those cards alone, I'd start working on a red/green deck. Green decks tend to be a bit easier to play.

Glancing at what you have, you could start with either a half decent Gruul deck or a half decent Selesnya deck. Though that might just be my bias towards green. Are there any specific colors you like to play with?

You have some very strong green and red beginnings in there. I might suggest focusing on those cards.

Your blue looks pretty good too.

When I was a new player, my first deck was this hodgepodge of green and red cards that I just liked how they played out. It wasn't anything special if I'm really honest with myself. But, gosh did I love that deck.

I'd suggest throwing together some of the cards and color combinations that appeal to you and go from there. The deckbuilder box will give you a lot of basic pieces but it will not give you a lot of consistency in your deck. You'll have to work for that. So, take whatever deck you put together and find a few friends to play with and go from there.

Magic is a very social game when you first get into it. It is all about learning about what works and making the connections to trade for the cards you like.

Some very basic deck building suggestions:

  • Stay as close to 60 cards in your deck without going under. Your deck will perform more consistently the closer you stick to this number.
  • Start off with 24 of those cards as lands. Some decks need more and some less, but try out this baseline until you get a feel for what works with what you have.
  • Have fun!

I'm sure you'll get better specifics from other posters. But that's my broad suggestion here. It is hard to know what to direct you towards until you've figured out what you like.

So iv put the full list into a deck format so its easier to have a look at:MTG Deck Builders Toolkit 2014 (hopefully its worked)

Thanks for the replies dudes, & I'm open to whichever colours/combination these cards work best for. After all its my first deck so ill b happy with anything that isn't terrible aha. I'm still in the stage where I'm loving all the artwork from each so I'm pretty neutral atm.

I love making decks with a limited pool of cards, challenge accepted! Here's what I came up with:

1x Rumbling Baloth 1x Kalonian Tusker 1x Slaughterhorn 2x Marauding Maulhorn 1x Ghor-Clan Rampager 1x Tenement Crasher 1x Advocate of the Beast

2x Riot Piker 1x Goblin Shortcutter 1x Firefist Striker 1x Predatory Sliver 1x Skarrg Guildmage 1x Deadly Recluse 1x Rubblebelt Raiders 1x Nessian Courser 2x Briarpack Alpha

2x Elvish Mystic 1x Voyaging Satyr 1x Zhur-Taa Swine 1x Ruination Wurm 1x Nemesis of Mortals

2x Shock 1x Giant Growth 1x Pit Fight 1x Coordinated Assault 1x Annihilating Fire 1x Flames of the Firebrand 1x Mugging 1x Hunt the Weak 1x Chandra's Outrage 1x Madcap Skills 1x Gruul War Chant 1x Trollhide

22 Mountain & Forest

Sideboard:

1x Aerial Predation 1x Druid's Deliverance 1x Fade into Antiquity 1x Towering Thunderfist 1x Viashino Racketeer 1x Brindle Boar 1x Traveler's Amulet 1x Sliver Construct 1x Dimir Keyrune 1x Howl of the Night Pack 1x Act of Treason 1x Axebane Stag 1x Slime Molding 2x Scab-Clan Charger

I split the creatures into three strategic groups, the first is beast and advocate of the beast to pump them up, the second is cheap creatures and rubblebelt raider to get a boost off of them, the last is just your mana ramp creatures and big creatures. I built a sideboard too, but not everything in there is useful, its some utility, some pumps, more creatures and more ramp. Anyway have fun playing magic and hope this helps.

one of the first decks I made was built around Guttersnipe and Delver of Secrets  Flip . pretty effective, and incredibly cheap

March 3, 2014 4:41 p.m.

acousticcancer's deck is almost identical to the one I made. That's a great use for your card pool!

Ooo cheers man, & I'm guessing the mana divide would be 50/50? I'll see how this deck handles itself :) Also, is there an cards I should keep a look out for that could fit well in this deck? Again, thanks for the help guys

AndyReveler says... #14

actually man, its best if you make the deck on here so you know which mana should be more of, i think 50/50 should be fine as it looks pretty equal, but it helps having some reassurance. As far as cards to look out for....more Ghor-Clan Rampager for sure and Advocate of the Beast if you wanna go beast route...you could always make G/R slivers as they're pretty cheap to make....um....Arbor Colossus could be good...another Nemesis of Mortals or two. You really gotta just play it out and see what its strengths and weaknesses are just adjust to your playing style from there. If you make the deck I hope it works for you and have fun with it! Let me/us know how it works.

Savageborn Hydra is another great card, and it doesn't cost too much compared to other G/R monsters.
