Maelstrom Wanderer Help

Deck Help forum

First off, I don't have a decklist before you ask.

I decided to take the card advantage route, lots of scrying, lots of cards in your hand.

I already have these: Brainstorm , Preordain , Ponder , Serum Visions , Fact or Fiction , Impulse , Gitaxian Probe , and Consecrated Sphinx .

Any cards in particular I'm missing? Thanks in advance guys!

In EDH, one-shot cantrips like Brainstorm and Ponder are less viable then they are in sixty-card. You kind of want the repeatable stuff. Consecrated Sphinx is good. Also Rhystic Study , Sylvan Library (if money's no issue), Oracle of Mul Daya (kind of counts because you play the lands from your library and keep a full grip), Arcanis the Omnipotent , Jace, the Mind Sculptor (again, if money's no issue), Mystic Remora , Recurring Insight , Greater Good , Harmonize , and Seer's Sundial .

Jace, the Mind Sculptor is a brainstorm every turn. Manamorphose is basically a free card.

Most of those cards are banned in modern and using 4-ofs of all of those in legacy/vintage sounds unhealthy.

Tiktacy: I assume when the OP asked for help with a Maelstrom Wanderer deck that they were referring to a Commander deck, not a sixty-card format.

Oh, in that case, you should use as many of them as possible. Brainstorm is particularly effective if you use a fetch after casting it so you shuffle away the 2 bricks you put on top of it.

I have a GoST deck from a recent tournament on my account for reference when I was playing around with EDH one day, here is the link. They use most of those to help with getting the right cards, so I assume it is an effective strategy.

With Maelstrom Wanderer , you have to be particularly careful with every card in your deck. You never want to have a "dead" Cascade hit. ( I don't recommend running counterspells for this reason )

Of the cards you listed, Brainstorm , Fact or Fiction , and Consecrated Sphinx are all in my Maelstrom deck, and they are all quite powerful. I can also see a case for Impulse , but I don't personally run it. The other cantrips are fine in EDH but less powerful in a Maelstrom deck because you don't want to waste cascades on relatively weak 1-mana cards.

Here's a link to my Maelstrom Wanderer deck. It hasn't been updated in a long time, so take it with a grain of salt. I built it to maximize the power of Maelstrom's double Cascade. I tried to make sure every card in the deck would have an impact during most stages of the game.

I went another direction with maelstrom wanderer which you may or may not agree with but just my 2 cents.

I actually don't scy at all and just focus on playing ramp to get wanderer out besides some potent cards. Sometimes I don't hit them but In that case i usually hit ramp or another cascade card, such as blood braid elf which is still helpful because you filter your deck while getting more stuff out of it which still helps board presence.

Not that I do not value scying, I do I just see it's value a lot more in color combo's such as esper or grixis. In wanderer rug I feel speed with a well tuned deck to the commander runs better.

Check my deck out in the link below if you want to see how I built mine with that ideology in mind. Happy Deckbuilding

Keep in mind that using scry and top deck manipulation cards both resolve before a second cascade, so you can essentially choose what the second cascade card will be, which is much better than it being random.

Mirri's Guile works really well with cascade.

Those cards work really well in a 60-card Cascade-themed deck with multiple copies of value cards. Arranging the top 3 cards of your library is certainly powerful, but it loses a lot of punch when you have 100 cards in your deck, and are Cascading twice.

Bloodbraid Elf , Etherium-Horn Sorcerer , Violent Outburst and Shardless Agent all share this ability and their colors with the Wanderer.

No they don't, I run a 60 card cascade themed deck and it is completely unthinkable for me to use SDT.

Maelstrom Wanderer + Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Deceiver Exarch + 97 land.

Deck done... as soon as you can cast Maelstrom Wanderer , you win (unless they have instant removal in hand.... then you lose.)

Maybe add Kozilek, Butcher of Truth , Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre , and Worldspine Wurm , so that if they break your combo, you can have a chance at getting your graveyard shuffled into your library... of course you have to find a way to get them into your graveyard.

And you also need to live long enough to get the 8 mana required for the combo, so it's likely not to work 1-on-1, but it may work (once) in multi-player.
