Looking for suggestions for this deck

Deck Help forum

Hi, I recently started playing and I'm looking to create my first deck. Basically, I wanted to make an exploit deck for standard but I think I'm too new for doing it alone, so if you could give me some suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

I still know very little about how decks must be built, but what I know is that I'd rather have the deck go for more control than aggro. Also, I'm not confident at all with how the deck will do even if I get help building it, so I would like it to be as cheap as possible without sacrificing much effectiveness (I mean, if a card is expensive but it's the core of the deck, I don't mind expending money in it).

Deck list: U/B Exploit

well, depending on the type of deck you're wanting to make, i've always had the thought in my head that blue is used for control because i've never got much out of it in aggro.

if you wanna go for control then you'll need a couple instants to counter spells, and then i would make it a blue/white deck to put tokens out, put Pacifism, Oppressive Rays on the opponents creatures, and then stay back and remove cards from the top of the opponents deck each turn.

and if you wanna be in complete control of health, you wanna find some cards that'll keep them from gaining health easily, so if you wanna keep the deck a blue/black, you can get the God card Erebos, God of the Dead(which is about $10 where i live), to make them not be able to gain health at all. Then, whileyou counter there creatures as they come out, you could get Mindscour Dragon to attack with each turn to make the opponent discard the top 4 cards of there library.

I mostly build Modern decks, so most of the decks i have can't be used and only a few of the cards are standard legal, but if you were to go out of standard and buy some older cards such as Vedalken Ghoul, Jace's Phantasm, Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip, or Inkfathom Witch, then your deck wouldn't be really bad, in fact these card have all worked for me when i used to use a blue/black deck

so if this info works for you, your welcome, if it doesn't then i'll do what i can to find some cards that could help.

First of all, thanks for the info, right now I'm thinking what I want the deck to specifically do.

I would rather keep the blue/black because, as I said in the description of the deck, I built it thinking of the exploit mechanic and I think those two colors are the ones that make the best use of it.

I don't really like Erebos, don't even know why, but I don't. And about the Mindscour Dragon, it probably is that I don't know how useful it is, but I don't like it either.

I was thinking about getting cards such as Anticipate or Grim Haruspex to have some more draw, Palace Siege to recover the creatures I exploited, Monastery Siege against control decks or Reality Shift and Murderous Cut for some removal. Would that be a good idea?

i love the cards Palace Siege and Monastery Siege and since Murderous Cut cost so much, depending how many cards you have in your graveyard, i would go for a smaller mana cost card that does the same thing(which i can't think of the name of the card at the moment), or go for a Despise to get rid of the creature before he brings it out because when its out they have the chance of having maybe an Ajani's Presence in there hand to make it indestructible so its not destroyed.

Another good card for blue/black i just got today would also be Circu, Dimir Lobotomist. you'd be exiling there cards and making everything with the same name not usable, but i don't know if this card is standard or modern deck legal, although i am very sure that it is not standard.

The smaller mana cost card you mentioned could be Hero's Downfall? If that's the case, I won't run it because it's too expensive at least where I live. I didn't know of Despise, it seems pretty good, I'll try it a few games and also Murderous Cut, but I think I'll go with Despise. Thanks a lot, I think I have a better idea now of how I want the deck to be built.
