Just starting in Standard

Deck Help forum

Ive been playing magic for a while now with friends and ive recently decided to start playing standard at my local shops friday night magic. I usually like to go B/W Control or Mono Red Aggro, but I need some help building a decent deck. I just picked up a dragons of tarkir intro pack so those are pretty much the only standard cards I have atm, but am more than willing to purchase more cards.

Budget is 65$

Here comes a shameless plug for a deck I'm working on, but Allied Gain and Drain could be something for you to build off of. You could keep in a fair amount of creatures that perform the drain, then add in more control options like Duress, Smite the Monstrous, Isolation Zone, Celestial Flare, Searing Light, Defeat, Gideon's Reproach, Radiant Purge, Reave Soul, Silkwrap, or any of a number of Black or White cards to increase your control ability.

I took out the sideboard cards and the land cards that I already had and the deck basically came down to 42$. Which is quite a nice value. Im flirting with the idea of adding silkwrap in there since I already have two copies but I really like bonesplinters in this deck because of the mana cost.

I haven't seen any BW control builds in standard. However, you could build a pretty solid mono red aggro deck on a budget. Which intro deck did you buy? Are there any cards that catch your eye? If you want you can look at my decks for inspiration. All I do is build budget brews for competitive play.

I actually bought the blue/white intro deck, it doesnt seem all that strong but its got a couple nice spells in it such as Silkwrap and Anticipate. Dragon's Eye Sentry seems to be a pretty decent situational draw

If you like that deck you should give this one a try.

It's Raining Djinn! (Budget Azorius Tokens)

I built this deck because I really like Skywise Teachings. It's pretty cheap and fairly competitive.

If you pick up 2 of the same event / intro decks that come with a value / staple in it like Hangarback Walker, it may only take a few additional cards from an lgs to make a reasonably viable deck that retains the value invested. This obviously works with some decks better than others and will only go so far down the competitive spectrum - but it can be a relatively quick-and-dirty low-risk way to jump in.

I did it with the Zulaport Cutthroat deck and while I didn't play at fnm, I held my own at the kitchen table against that did do respectable at fnm.

Mr. King, I really like that deck, especially due to the fact i already have most of it already. The only card giving me fits money wise is prairie stream but i can deal with it seeing as how its worth it.

Prairie Stream is good but completely necessary. You can switch them out with Mystic Monastery if you need to. That's how I originally ran the deck. I still encourage getting the prairie streams if you can. They're pretty cheap, relatively, right now.
